Sorry if this is a stupid question but what format would people recommend for the best sound quality? I have heard of OGG but do not know much about it? Just got my player on Firday.

Wondering what other people were using.

I use WMA @ 96Kps and am very happy with it but most people seem to think OGG is best.

FLAC is lossless so therefore the best quality but takes up oodles of space. I'd give with WMA or OGG (try both and see if you can tell the difference, I can't).

Personally I don't ever go higher than 128Kbps.

OGG is the best for a given file size IMO. FLAC is good if you want the best quality sound.

I refuse to support Microsoft. You can thank MS for our beloved X5's being useless with subscription music services (yes, I know thats kinda backwards thinking, hehe...).

Supposedly OGG can produce higher quality audio than MP3 at lower bitrates. I _want_ to support OGG, but I typically stick with MP3 because of its worldwide acceptance as the standard. I feel that your music is "less portable" if you use OGG.

Mp3 has become kinda like an unofficial standard for digital music. Its a pretty good format if you're not hardcore audiophile. Especially if you rip your CDs using Lame presets.

One of the strongest plus for mp3 is, that it doesn't use as much battery power as ogg. dont know how much wma uses, though.

Why can you blame MS for Cowon not supporting DRM?

Besides I bet you use Windows at some point during the week

Hehe, I said it was "backwards thinking" because in my twisted mind, I kind of blame MS for the whole DRM thing in the first place. I also just like to target MS because I'm a Linux user...I do realize that Apple is just as bad or worse about the whole DRM thing.

Argh!!! You're right...I hate to admit it...=(

EDIT: If there was no DRM, I would subscribe to an online music store in an instant.

stig: try encoding your OGGs by specifying the quality level rather than the bitrate, you get better quality sound at the same file size. i use OGG quality=7 which gives you files of around 200kbps

Wow. Anything less than LAME APS (which chimes in normally at just over 200kbps) is laced with wierdness, and is flat with artifacts. To me, APS is the line in the sand, below which horrible stone crabs dwell.

Most of my stuff is MP3 and WMAs from years of copying CDs. I have recently tested out OGG and like it very much. The problem is I have this device called an Audiotron connected to my living room stereo and receives digital music wirelessly from the PC. Audiotron basically only supports MP3 and WMA formats. Other than ditching the device, any recommendations on best configuration for MP3? Lately I have been using 160kbps

MPC is the best sounding lossy format out there, followed by OGG. Too bad iAudio doesn't support MPC just yet.

@paps. Make sure you use variable bit rate mp3. They yield higher quality compared to CBR, but you may have already known this.

dont bmale MS or Apple, blame the RIAA and Media Companies that force people to use DRM. If they didn't insist on its existence then Microsoft wouldnt have made it, or if they had Music stores wouldnt be forced to include it. its the Media companies that wont let stores sell titles without DRM, not microsoft.

I prefer WMA. On my computer I use the highest quality VBR WMA. On A player when I get one I'll probably use 160 or 190 WMP as it'll save battery.
