Default Help With X5L Remote Replacement

The headphone jack on my X5L *remote* gave up the ghost today. It's loose, and now impossible to position the headphone plug so that I get audio through both sides. Most of the time, when I put the headphone plug in, I hear nothing. I tried removing the three small screws to open it up and see if there was anything I could possibly fix on the inside, but still couldn't get the remote to open. I thought perhaps I might be able to superglue something and fix it, but it doesn't look good.

Anyway...

I visited every website that I could find, that presumably sold the X5L, and nowhere did I see the remote offered for sale. (There are a dwindling number of retail outlets that are selling the X5l.) At newegg, they said it was no longer manufactured. At two other electronic sales outlets that formally handled the unit, they said it was no longer available, and not being made anymore. I called the eight hundred number for Cowon, and got a recorded message that directed me to a website, that had no live chat available even though it was during the daytime, during the normally expected hours.

Because of the difficulty of contacting Cowon, both by telephone, and at the website, I'm very leery of purchasing another one of their units, even a different model.

So... I'm open for suggestions. The least expensive thing I could do would be to replace the remote control unit before the headphone jack on the main unit goes out as well. Does anybody know where a remote could be obtained?

Failing that, can anybody suggest a personal MP3 player that is drag-and-drop, and at the very least plays MP3 files with perhaps a couple of other audio formats, and has sound that is hopefully almost as good, if not as good as the X5L?

ITunes absolutely kills the iPod player for me.

Thanks in advance for any replies!

Jim

Try ebay?

If you wan't an other player, get a player that is supported by rockbox. It'll be drag n'drop, with many audio formats and perfect sound (even on the ipod)!

Failing that, Google finds me quite a few suppliers still in the UK. Not sure how many will ship to where you are though...

First of all, thank you for replying to my message. I tried the URL that breakfastchef specifically mentioned...
http://www.jetmall.net/index.asp?Pag...TS&Category=51
and found the following... unfortunately. :-(.

[ It says... "Unable to Get Product: Remote Control for iAUDIO X5 / X5L to Your Cart
(Message: Not Enough in Stock. Try a Lower Quantity.) ]

And by the way, if you try adding all of the remotes on that page to your cart, only the first, and the last will actually be added to your cart. The three Center remotes give the exact same JavaScript indication, that they are out of stock, and try a lower quantity. Of course this is trying with quantity = 1. This is disheartening.

GSV3MiaC, could you please do me an enormous favor.
Since I was unable to locate any of the suppliers that actually listed the remote, if you could paste a few URLs into a reply, I will happily purchase the remote from them. I tried doing that with Google, and was unable to find any suppliers anywhere, that still carried the remote, United Kingdom included.

Again thanks very much for everyone taking the time to reply. I'm still very much in the market for either the X5L remote, or failing that, a different personal MP3 player. I will take a look at rock box.

Sincerely,

Jim

Well, I had a look around the UK for you, and came up blank (3 weeks ago one stockist had 50 of them - either they were lying of there was an end of line rush on them).

Several stockists are 'waiting for new stock', a few others are saying 'discontinued'. Sounds like going direct to you local Cowon person is the best route. I can't believe they really screwed up to where people are still selling X5s (end of line stock) but the remotes are not available, especially since the M5 uses the same one.. Well, Ok, given their overall marketing ability, maybe I can believe it ...

Again, I want to thank everybody for trying to help.

If anybody knows where I can order (get and pay for) the Cowon remote for the X5L, or the M5, (which I have been told is the same unit) please, please let me know.

If you want to reach me directly, and not through the forum,
my e-mail address = incoming@pobox.com.

Thanks very much in advance!

Jim

You might also try a 'wanted' ad in the classifieds section, in case someone who has trashed their X5/M5 has a remote they can no longer use. Just a thought (assuming you don't mind a used but working one).

Has anyone got any further advice? A dealer that has compiled a secret stash? I've had my X5 for a month now and have had no luck in finding a remote control. Is it correct that the remote for the M3 is compatible?

Cowon Germany sells a remote via ebay ... check here (it's the last entry at the moment, the german word for remote is "fernbedienung")

http://search.ebay.de/_W0QQsassZcowon-germany

The auction goes until August, 13th .... and they ship to Europe, so UK should be included as well

Hope that helps

(Although the posting I'm answering to is quite old..)

Yes, that's correct. The only difference is as far as I know the color of the plastic hull. (M3 silver, X5 black)

In early 2007 I got a M3 remote control from Cowon Germany as a replacement for my X5L remote control, as it's earphone jack was broken and they didn't have the black X5L remote control in stock anymore.

Now my M3 remote control's earphone jack is broken too and trying to fix it by myself didn't work out yet.. and so I'm using my X5L less because the X5L control interface is far worse than the one of the remote..

Cowon stopped producing them, that's all. I had a very hard time to get one, had to buy a used one from ebay as well

I also wanted to get a remote for my x5, but I am not as crazy as these bidders on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.de/Cowon-Fernbedienu...QQcmdZViewItem
It is now at 111€, original price was 46€!
It is only a remote, buy another mp3 player instead and connect it to the otg, so it is a kind of wireless remote!

TIP: Go to a local store that doesn't sell over the internet (but sells Iaudios).
