View Full Version : Problem with DVDShrink
I just tried ripping a DVD with DVDShrink, with the ultimate goal of recoding it later to put on my A2. I followed the DVDShrink instructions that I found online, and all seemed to go well. I ended up with a folder with about eight ripped files in it.
However, I then tried to burn them to a blank DVD using Nero 6.6. I got an error message saying that the files will not play on a standard DVD player. It said to make a DVD that will play on a standard DVD player, "use a DVD compilation type."
Well, I burned them to a DVD anyway, and it wouldn't play in my computer. Next, I tried converting the files with Jet Audio, but it also gave me an error message and wouldn't work.
Can anybody help me with this? Thanks!
Update: OK, it seems that DVDShrink works fine. The problem is with the Nero software. Has anybody else used Nero 6.6 to burn DVD files? Am I missing codecs or some plugins? Sorry for being such a noob.

Please dont go crazy but did you...
Set it for a DVD disk?
Set it for DVD Video?
Drage all of your files and put it IN the Video_TS directory.
You will need to find the right VOB file that contains the video. But Jet can do it. I think there was/is a how to do section here...
I usualyy use DVD Decriptor when I need to make a backup. Else if it for the A2 its FairUse Wizard.

Thanks, Nightwing.
I did not do those things you suggested. I don't have an instruction manual for Nero so I'm flying by the seat of my pants. This morning I went into Nero's "extras" mode and found how to create a video DVD. I don't know why they have to hide it. Well, it took me several attempts, but I finally figured out how to do it. However, it said my files were too big for the disk. So it's back to DVD Shrink to try to shrink the DVD some more. Or maybe I just need one VOB file. I will experiment with Nero again.
Thanks again! :bigthumbs
There's nothing hidden about video DVDs in Nero, IMO.
When you make a new project, simply choose "DVD Video" from the menu, then drop your VOB, BUP, IFO files into the VIDEO_TS folder that Nero already created in the layout.

You're right. Except that the DVD Video option was not visible until I clicked on a button on the bottom of the window. Anyway, all went well this time and I was able to copy a DVD. :bigthumbs
Now I will try to use Jet Audio to convert it for use in my A2. Hope it goes more smoothly this time! :nutty:
WTF? I tried to drag my newly ripped DVD files into Jet Audio, and I kept getting error messages.
First, it would not recognize files such as: VTS_TS.BUP and VTS_TS.IFO.
Then, when I deleted those files (4 total) and clicked on start, I got an error message telling me conversion may not start due to missing video or audio codecs. It listed two files: VTS_01_2.VOB and VTS_01_4.VOB .... which were there, by the way.
I have never been able to convert any video using Jet Audio. Does anyone know what the problem might be? I'm really disgusted with this software, especially after reading how great everybody thinks it is.

IFO files contain no video they contain the "program" of the DVD. BUP files are backups of the IFO files, just in case the original IFO is corrupted.

VOB files are MPEG2 video streams, and assuming you have any DVD software installed should be able to convert with any program you want. If you don't have DVD playback software installed I highly recommend the Combined Community Codec Pack (http://www.cccp-project.net/). It includes an MPEG2 decoder, and allows you to pick and choose just the codecs you want to install. My friend is a tester for it, and guarantees me there is no "extra" baggage that most codec packs contain.

JetAudio can't convert video if you don't have the appropriate codec installed. Also forget about JetAudio if it doesn't end in wmv, asx, or avi.

Thanks a lot, Aikiwoce!
I do have PowerDVD installed, and it works well, so that's not the problem. I downloaded the Combined Community Codec Pack, but how do I know which ones I need to install?
Thanks again!:bigthumbs

cameraz: If I understand your question correctly, you want to shrink a DL-DVD onto a 4.5GB DVD with DVD Shrink but are having problems burning it. Correct?
This doesn't exactly belong into a forum about the A2. Try searching the forum on doom9.net for general video ripping/encoding/shrinking questions.
But anyway, see if I can help: The way I use DVDShrink is to direct the output to a single, 4.5GB large .ISO file.
You can then load this file directly in Nero (Open image) and burn it.
But again, DVDShrink has nothing to do with the A2! If you want to rip a DVD for MPEG4 encoding, use DVDDecrypter.

I do want to rip DVD movies to put on my A2, but while I'm at it, I wanted to back up my DVD movies to DVDs as well. Sorry if I asked too much.
By the way, I thought DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter did the same thing (extract files from a DVD and put them on your hard drive). But if I use DVD Decrypter to rip my DVDs to put on my A2, will it also encode them into MPEG4s, or do I have to use another program (ie: AutoGK) ?
Meanwhile, I am pleased to report that I have successfully mastered DVD Shrink, and was able to burn a very good quality DVD after ripping the files. But when I tried to drag those same files into Jet Audio so I could put the movie into my A2, I got an error notice and couldn't complete the process.
Some day I'll figure this all out. In the meantime, please bear with this noob. [cry]

Thanks, dfkt, but as you can see by the quote above I already have learned how to use DVD Shrink. Now I need to know how to encode those files for my A2. [sad]

excellent link, dfkt! I usually direct people directly to the XviD (AutoGK) guide but this way they can make their own choice.
However, note that x264 and Nero Digital are NOT supported by the A2. XvID is the way to go IMO.

Sorry, I didn't mean to tick you off. What I meant was that there is a much better forum out there to answer general video encoding questions.
Besides, this information is all over iaudiophuile.net already (try the search function! [wink] )
By the way, I thought DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter did the same thing (extract files from a DVD and put them on your hard drive).
Yeees... actually, no. You can use both programs to do that, but DVDDecrypter is much faster and more powerful.
The only real use of DVDshrink is to "shrink" DVDs so they fit on 4.5GB media!
But if I use DVD Decrypter to rip my DVDs to put on my A2 (...) do I have to use another program (ie: AutoGK) ?
Absolutely yes! All DVDDecrypter does is "rip" the DVD to your hard disk and remove CSS protection (which makes it illegal under the DMCA act yadda yadda... [cursing] ).
However, the movie is still encoded in MPEG2 format (unencrypted .VOB files).
You now need to transcode this to a MPEG4 codec that the A2 supports (currently DivX 3.11 to 6.0, XviD, WMV 9).
There are loads of tools for that - AutoGK, FairUse, AVI.net, Gordian Knot, Nandub, VirtualDubMod...
For a newbie, I suggest you stick to either AutoGK (freeware) or Fairuse (shareware). Search this forum for more information or head over to http://www.doom9.net!

I have never used Jetaudio and probably never will!
I use DVDDecryptor + AutoGK or DVDDecryptor + Gordian Knot + Avisynth + VirtualDubMod.

Thanks a lot for the info, McSmarties. [wink]
Granted these aren't free programs, but the easiest way to recode to the AVI container I have found is to use Roxio Easy Media Creator 8 or Inter Video DVD copy Platinum. Both supply the necessary DIVX codec, they simply select the main movie for you (no guessing) and the quality is excellent!
Remember to configure EMC8 for 2-pass encoding (quality is poor otherwise). With IV DVD Copy 2-pass encoding is automatic.
Since I use the Win XP Professional x64 edition I have really enjoyed using EMC8 for all my multimedia needs (it supports the 64 bit OS). I think it is a great package with Sonic DVD included for video camera projects and Photosuite for scanning and photo editing needs.
I use [...] DVDDecryptor + Gordian Knot + Avisynth + VirtualDubMod.
Same for me :)
Except I use the Robot4Rip frontend instead of plain DVDDecrypter - it's excellent, demuxing AC3 with BeSweet and Indexing with DGIndex (also contains VobSub, vStrip and ChapterXtractor).
I found DGIndex scripts to be the best solution for IVTC/deinterlacing, much better than any filters (bob/weave/...) in AviSynth or VDub.
And BeSweet scripting is extremely nice for audio conversion, doesn't matter if you prefer WAV, MP3 or OGG.
Did you ever try it? Highly recommended. It's described in the advanced guide: http://www.doom9.org/xvid.htm
