View Full Version : What's the best way to rip and convert movies?
I have done research on ripping and converting movies to play on ther A2. There are so many programs and opinions i am unsure of what to do. I wanted to know from A2 owners how to get quality movies from dvd to A2. What programs did you use (preferable free, but I will buy if it makes it simple and easy)? Do you use Xvid or Divx? What should I do from the beginning? I have limited knowledge so speak plainly and complete. Thanks for any help and advice.
Is it really illegal to rip a copy-protected dvd when I bought the dvd and I just want to get it on my A2? What do you guys do about this. I did record a movie playing from my tv, that was easy, is that easier and/or better than ripping and converting. Again, thanks for any advice.

It dosent really matter if its legal...as long as you don't distribute it. Its for your own personal use: if you own it you have the right to back it up.
I use Super DVD Ripper from DVD --> AVI
or
Nero Recode (DVD to .mp4) --> WinAVI (.mp4 --> .avi)
Patrick
I use dvd decrypter (no longer available)
then Imtoo Dvd ripper to avi
Excellent quality

I use Cucusoft DVD Ripper ($20 or something, so it's not bad) and the latest Xvid codec, which lets you really customise your rips. It does take a bit of setting up, but the 'help' in the software is useful. I haven't had any problems. Also, this software is a 'one-click' type transcoder. Many people talk of using AutoGK and blah blah blah...but that is more complicated, more time consuming, and I think more problematic. One-click DVD rippers are easy, and with the right codec, give you the same results.

It isn't too hard to rip a video and encode it, but it does take time (think hours). The easiest way to do the above is to first use DVD decrypter to rip the DVD to your computer. Next, encode it using AutoGK. I use the XviD codec. This is really easy and free. I would save the $20 and go this route.
You can find all the information you'll need to know about this, including a step-by-step guide on how to rip and convert DVDs can be found here: http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm
Good Luck, and please don't distribute your copies.

I use full blown "Gordian Knot". Not AutoGK, the real deal.
It has a fairly steep learning curve but it's worth it for the control you have when using it.

Agree. Gordian Knot seems to be one of the best options for the process of DVD convertion. Points to flexibility with this program ...
EDIT: My bad for the double post. My connection is really bad.

Thanks for your help and advice. I took your advice and downloaded Dvddecryptor and autogk. I ran dvdecryptor and it done its work (i suppose). Now when I am trying to run autogk it ask for the file. Well, there is a folder with many vob and ifo files in it. Autogk is asking for one file. I can't figure it out. Can you help me? I read the instructions to set up, but I can't run it because I do not know what file to run.
Thanks for anyone's help.
I wouldn't use the DivX guide from doom9.net - this one gives you much better quality: http://doom9.net/xvid

Alright, to figure out which one to chose, I use PowerDVD. Open each of the VOB files until you find the one that is the beginning of the movie. If you don't have a program like that (Windows Media Player doesn't work like this) it is probably the first file that is 0.99GB in size. Also, DVDdecrypter by default selects the largest segment of video on the dvd to decrypt and rip (i.e. not the title video or copyright warning video), so on your hard disk, the main video is probably lowest numbered vob file it's the VIDEO_TS folder (such as VTS_02_1.VOB is with the DVD in my drive).

Also, by the way, AutoGK has a user guide that is helpful and can be accessed by Start Menu/AutoGK/Tutorials/English Tutorial

I use iriverter:http://iriverter.sourceforge.net/
It is free and easy. You have to change a few options but besides that, you only have to click like 3 buttons. It is a program for iriver, iAudio, and iPod products. Quick download and easy to use. I recommend it.

Thank You! Thank You! It worked. I used the .99 file. After conversion it took me a little while to figure what to do next and find the file, but after I did I transfered to A2 and it plays beautifully. Thanks for all your advice omjeremy. The free programs you suggested and the direction you gave me all worked great. Thanks!

Uh Oh! I spoke too soon. I played some of the movie and it seemed to work great. As I got more in to the movie today, the audio and video do not match. The audio is about 1-1 1/2 seconds slower, and very annoying. What did I do wrong and/or what can I do to fix it? At least I was able to rip it and convert it. I couldn't do that at first. Thanks!

Have you tried the program called FarUse Wizzard? Have never seen it fail in lipsync. And did a ton of movies and shows to fill my new A2 for avoiding garbage moves the airlines show!
Simple. Drop DVD in drive on computer. Start Program... Select options or set auto. Does both Movie disk and Epsodes disk. Can do one or all epsodes. They have a limited version you can try.
If the A2 software would have a combined VOB option would possible move over to it.
Just FYI, the program's called "FairUse Wizard"...

I'm sorry ibewill, but I don't know how to help you there! I haven't had that problem. Perhaps you should upgrade the firmware with the latest version on your A2. Maybe that will fix the problem?

They don't give you the same results, and if you find autogk so hard to use that you're willing to pay $20, I'm not sure how you found out how to use your A2. You select the IFO file on the DVD that is for the longest PGC, (a 10 minute one is incorrect - a 1 hour and 40 minute one is correct), you select an output directory, you hit add job, you hit start.

I'll second that. Fairuse is very easy to use and gives you options for resolution and sound. You can pick mp3 or ac. Screen ratio and file size(compression).
I'm impressed with Fair Use Wizard. Tried the trial version (700kb files), I prefer a little better resolution so I purchased the full version and set the file size to 1 GB and also have been using DIVX instead of XVID. Results are good. Once you have the program configured the way you like, you can select auto mode, start and walk away.
Previously I had used DVD Shrink to rip to HD then used EMC8 or Inter Video DVD Copy Platinum to encode to AVI container. The results were excellent however FU WIZ is a breeze to use. Regardless of method used it takes about the same amount of time with either process (over two hours).
FU WIZ is suppossed to be a multi threaded application as is DVD Shrink, I'm thinking of upgrading my AMD64 3200+ to an X2 CPU. Anyone using dual core and care to comment on performance?

I haven't used FU Wizard in years, but I noticed nearly no performance increase with any of the other small video encoding/transcoding apps on my dualcore processor (Virtualdub, TMPEG, DGIndex, AVIMuxGUI, etc.).
Only big corporate apps like Photoshop, Vegas Video, Samplitude, Cubase seem to benefit a lot from dualcore CPUs at the moment.

I just got a hold of fu wizard and it will not let me convert protected movies, any recomendations on other programs that will allow this.

Are you going from one region to another... Example: Region 1 set drive doing a region 2 disk. Wont work. Reg 1 with Reg 1 disk ok.
Else could be the disk with a late protection. May want to try a older disk as a test.
Why not just rip/decrypt the disk first onto your PC as a .ISO file (with DVD Decrypter or the like)? Then just point FU Wizard to the unencrypted .ISO on your PC. Seems this way might be faster too as FU Wizard will not have to read directly from the DVD for two hours - reading from your PCs HD is usually faster...

Over the past 48 hours, I have tried FairUseWizard, DVDDecrypter, Gordian Knot and AutoGK. Maybe I didn't use FUW right but all I got out of it was the ISO and VOB files. It still wasn't read to load and that took over 3 hours.
DVD Decrypter created the same files in about 40 minutes.
Gordian Knot was VERY complicated and some Nandub file did not load onto my computer so after spending 20 minutes getting the settings right, it still would not work.
Finally, I tried Auto GK and it has worked perfectly. I was able to convert the file I did with FUW and DVDDecrypter. I haven't watched an entire program but I have started several of them and at least the first few minutes looks good.

Odd that FairUseWizard would not produce a Xvid video file.
Did you do these steps.... Just wondering.

Also DVDDecripter only removes region and locks. It cannot convert.

I didn't have any step by step instructions for FUW. I've done so much since then, I can't even remember what it looked like. I didn't know what to pick for a lot of the options. Auto GK doesn't have much that you have to pick. It is nice to be able to get a bunch of stuff deconverted and then use Auto GK to do all of them at once. I can convert bunches of files one after the other rather than having to do them one at a time. I'm using Auto GK to actually convert. DVDDecrypter just produces the ISO and VOB files without the locks.

Yea you need to run one or two disk pass it and its settings to get the jist . But after that is basically automatic. Like most of these. Nice thing is it pops it as one file. I did have one problem disk. A movie caleld Destination Moon. Had to use Jet to zap the VOB to the final form. Else it eats and pops out a single file for me.
Good luck on your hunt!

Auto GK also does one file. It also does the seperate files in case you do want to put it on 2 discs (if you add the size of the other 2 files, it equals the big one). So you actually get 2 versions of the movie.
I'm having trouble with Chronicles of Narnia though. Auto GK can't read the ISO file. I might try it with FUW and see how that does. Has anyone else had this problem? DVDDecrypter doesn't report any errors but it still won't work.
About midnight last night, I ran out of Hard Drive to store my movies! Luckily I had a 200gb hard drive I got for $39 on Black Friday. I have never added a 2nd drive to a computer but I had it done in about 45 minutes. Now everything is moving again!

As time goes along the companies add more and more tricks to stop DVD rippers. DVDDecriptor is no longer being updated. Not sure if DVDShrink is either.
Use FUW for disk and MediaCoder for AVI/mov etc. Just put 1080i Ratatouille trailer through MC. Also unprotected Podcast video. Nice.
Try here if you have questions www.videohelp.com is a good place for reference, tools etc.

On the first page of that site is: How to backup DVD to AVI or DivX or XviD
Comprehensive, easy to follow guide, complete with screenshots, which takes you through the process of converting individual episodes from a TV Series DVD into DivX/XviD (so one episode per DivX/XviD file) using the freeware tools "AutoGK" and "DVD Decrypter". The guide focuses on DVD > XviD conversion, however, it is easy to change a simple setting within AutoGK that will convert the video to DivX instead (this option is mentioned in the guide).
So they are also recommending the same programs that I have found.
Is DVDDecriptor the same as DVD Decrypter? I had noticed the different name before but just thought you might have misspelled it.

They have not just one guide but various guides to basically do the same thing. Some of those guide have been around for a while. Some use this or that program to get to basically the same end. There are not just one way to convert but may wanys to do it.
Same. DVD Decrypter is the correct name. And just checked. Its no longer being updated. Which means as times goes along. Will have less affect on newer disk.

I am trying to rip some TV shows and each show is seperate on the disc. Will any of the decypting programs out there grab all of them at the same time and decode them all? DVD Decrypter will only do one at a time.
Also I wanted to know if I can put stuff into folders and load the folders onto the A2.
