excuse my ignorance, but I don't quite understand Cowon's firware things, seeing that I haven't bought one of their players (yet). Does "final" mean there's not going to be any more firmware updates for the A2? that's it?

No, "Final" means that the software (firmware in case of the A2) is in this version out of beta testing. After this Final version there might in the future appear new versions with added features and/or bug fixes.

Congratulations Cowon for supporting your products by updating the firmware at this fantastic rate.

I am quite anxious to get some Hebrew fonts support. I don't understand why there is none. I am currently not in Israel, but I understand from some friends there, that there is some (or full) support of Hebrew characters in U3.

We (I and my wife) have a G3 and an A2, both of which lack Hebrew characters support.

I don't think there should be an issue with RTL or LTR, only with the characters themselves. (Meaning that this can be dealt with later on).
We don't need menus in Hebrew, just in filenames and in ID3 tags. - At least this is my opinion.

I hope someone at Cowon realizes this is something to be done. There are quite a lot of people in Israel, and Israelis abroad, that own Cowon products, to be pleased with this option.

Well, the only additions I've noticed are the pitch correction and left right balance...

Speeds seem a little faster when pitch correction is disabled, and I don't remember pan and scan being able to go up to 300% before..probably just missed it though. Also, I'm probably wrong on this as well, but you can now switch between picture and music even when zoomed in.

At this stage, I am just hoping for a thumbnail picture viewing and a much faster picture viewing speed. Creative's Zen Vision: M uses the same Texas Instruments TM320 chipset. Why the hell it can view pictures so much better than A2? :jamming:
Yea that would be REAL nice. I think thumbnail viewing of pictures would be the best thing to have right now (even at the cost of having to run the pictures through JetAudio). I'm so happy with my A2, but it's pretty inconvenient when it comes to looking at my pictures. It's really frustrating to show my friends my pictures because I can't always find the one I want. Plus, PLEASE support Canon cameras for the OTG feature. I think their cameras are really popular and I'm confident the many Canon camera owners would really like to be able to use their A2's to its fullest potential.

And I can't forget......

Cowon, you guys are really doing a good job! Thanks for the features and the firmware!! I feel I made the right choice by sticking with your company. I'm looking forward to the next firmware upgrade!!

here goes a korean with the translation:
note - some of it u might already know from the last beta firmwares.

-speed control has been added to movies and music, on any format supported by the A2.
-pitch conitrol has been added so your music doesn't sound all funny when you change the speed.(i personally like the weird tone cuz it's funny)
CAUTION! - because of factors such as the codec, resolution, bitrate, and effect settings may turn the video out of sync with the audio.
CAUTION! - the pitch control may introduce distortion or weird noises.
- AlbumArt now enabled, and now at 160x100!
- when either
1)you have a JPEG file inserted into the ID3 tag(meta info)
2)you have a JPEG file that has the same name as the song
3)you have a JPEG file within your folder(random selection when there's many JPEG files)
the albumart will work. Just note:
if you don't belong to any of the 3 mentioned above, you won't get an image for albumart and go back to the boring picture of the cd spinning.
- function #1 with the JPEG file directly inserted into the music file will ONLY work on mp3's.
- functions #2 and #3 will work on any codec supported.
- codecs are than JPEG for the photos is not supported.
- using Jetaudio, you can insert a JPEG file into an mp3's ID3 info.
- you can turn on/off the albumart in the menu.
CAUTION! If the Albumart image is large, it may take a moment or two longer to display the albumart.

- Timer Recording Function added.
- up to 10 different recordings possible.
- schduled times will go in order of earliest time to latest time.
- if the A2 is turned off at the time of the recording, it will automatically turn on.
- if the A2 is on, it will give a message to confirm to switch to record mode. If there is no response for more than 10 seconds, it will automatically switch to record mode.

The next feature I don't even want to mention since it's another one of those korean tutoring sound files for students now supported.

- AC3 multi-channel decoder engine improved, gives a better representation of surround sound.
- another language added - Dutch So far, 10 languages are supported:
korean, english, japanese, chinese simplified, chinese traditional, french, german, russian, spanish, and now dutch. enjoy!(still no hebrew im sorry my friend)
- fixed bug where player occasionally freezes if you try to rewind or fastforward when you're paused.
- fixed bug where JPEG was not shown because it got confused with the camera info(which camera the photo was taken with) within the photo.
- fixed problems with ID3 Tag version 2.4
- the next thing again is about korean stuff, fixing some issues with Melon, basically one of the many iTunes' of Korea if you haven't already known.

Yes I also agree, thumb nail is what I need for the old photos. and I have a Canon powershot A610 the cowon kows what it is but then cant talk to it. aaaahhahahaaa.

The reason being is the host has to have the drivers for the camera as its not mass storage device, anything that is and is not NTFS format can be read by the Cowon.

Maybe its just a matter of Cowon including a Canon driver in the next firmware. if they dont include canon software it will never work.

Other than that it works my card reader nicely and bring that with me on holidays.

And to add with the addition of the 1.73 firmware to my device truely makes this the best player I've ever had. I cant think of anyother addition (photo viewer) to make this player any better. and imagine its only been out since October in Korea and here since Jan and already they have had loads of updates.

Already over on the Creative forums they are complaining about bug fixes not being sorted and the fact there had been no update in months.

Keep up this brilliant work Cowon, only had it 3 weeks and astonished.

Hi guys, this is my first post. I am in the UK and I just bought a nice shiny new A2. Loving it already, but it came with firmware 1.39C so it could really do with an upgrade. Unfortunately the zip files containing the firmware updates don't appear to be downloadable at the moment. Very frustrating. Would anyone be able to email me the 1.73 Final release. I'd be really grateful.

I have a couple of other questions if you don't mind. I have found the image file for the startup screen, but it doesn't have an extension. I assume the resolution it needs to be is 480x272, but what about the format. I haven't actually tried anything else yet, just thought i'd ask you guys first.

Also, should a standard USB flash drive work with USB OTG. How about a simple flash card reader. I thought they were pretty generic and would just work but I tried my flash drive today and it didn't work. Maybe it just hasn't got the drivers for it yet because of my really early firmware.

Thanks in advance for your help.

The A2_LOGO file is in the Windows Bitmap format (.BMP). The name is without extention, so that the A2 recognises it as being a new logo file. In the picture you can see detailed info about the A2_LOGO file. When you create a file with exactly those properties, give it the name A2_LOGO, and put it in the A2's root folder, the A2 will make it its new startup logo. So you can create your very own A2 startup logo!

A higher resolution image is not possible because of the limited file size. But anyway, here are the details of the requirments for an A2 startup logo.

Format: Windows Bitmap (.BMP)
Dimensions: 480X272 pixels
Pixels per inch: 2500
Bits per layer: 8
Number of layers: 1
Maximum number of colours: 256

With this info you could do the job...

Hey, i've got a couple of questions for anyone that is willing to help.

First: I've read about how to have CD artwork playing while music is playing and i know the 3 different criteria required for that to work. However, I have imported all my music via Media Player 10 which automaticallly downloads and stores the CD artwork as a hidden file in that particular music album file. IS there any way of using this data (which is already stored there) to display Cd artwork on the A2 player.... or will i have to go back manually and obtain all the cd artwork again? (can you convert hidden files to visible files to use in the A2 player?)

Second: How does the lyrics function work?? Do you have to sync up lyrics and store them as an ID3 tag??

I've installed v1.73 final and please correct me if I'm wrong but the browser/menu system needs someone. In older browsers software packages (norton commander/dos) you would have .. if you wanted to go from the current folder to the previous folder. On the A2 it kicks you out to the main screen when you use the back button but if they put the .. in the same folder at the top above the files (or below) and you select it you can go back to the previous folder. I know this would be possible to incorporate in a update but of course there might be problems if this function is copyrighted somewhere.

I would love this function, as going through the folders is a pain if it kicks me out every time I want to go just 1 folder back. What do you think?

First don't use Media Player 10 to organize your music, try something like Media Monkey. To add lyrics to your songs you need to use the Lyrics Database Manager available for download on cowon's sites.

in the Text reader, if you press left or right you go forward/backward a whole page :winker:

I remember well how I would keep the joystick pressed down for ages and wish there would be afaster way to advance!
Morale: looks like Cowon could do a better job with the manual.

(for example, does it actually tell you anywhere that you can multitask by keeping C pressed while playing some music?)

[Improved and Fixed Features]

*Added "Play Speed" feature for Movie and Music for all file formats.

- Applied "Pitch Correction" feature
- [Pitch Correction] on/off can be controlled from [Setup] - [Music] - [Pitch Correction] (Default is Off)
- Adjustable between 0.7x to 1.5x
- Controlled separately for Movie and Music.
- Movie Playback [B button] - [Play Speed] or [Setup] - [Movie] - [General] - [Play Speed]
- Music Playback [B button] - [Play Speed] or [Setup] - [Music] - [General] - [Play Speed]

Caution! Depending on what audio and video codecs your files use, the audio track may not play in time to the video.
Caution! The Pitch Correction feature may introduce distortion to the music.

* Added album art (JPEG) display while listening to music files:
- Display as 160X100 size

The addition of the multiple timed recordings function is one I've really been hoping to have for a while now - awesome that it's underway now!

Of course, without any sort of IR Blaster functionality, you're pretty much up the creek if the TV shows you want to record are on different channels from each other. AV500 still has the definite lead in this department, but at least it's an improvement - multiple recordings is definitely better than only a single timer being possible.

these instructions are slightly wrong.

You have to look under the (SOUND) settings.

I thought this was important as I couldnt find it for a while.

well, sorry guys... I just did a jump upgrade from 1.51 to 1.73 couple days ago... but since when they remove .mpg/.dat support??? well, then I downgraded from 1.73 back to 1.59... mpg works but FW shows 1.73E and application ver. is 1.59...

PLEASE put it back cowon, thanks a bunch!

That's where reading the release notes may help?
I believe 1.59 was the only firmware with mpeg2 support, and clearly states in notes that you can't downgrade past 1.61.

It would be ideal if the A2 loaded both the current song and next song into flash memory so it could do this.
