View Full Version : talk about iaudio 5 ...
Hi everybody.
Iaudio 5 has been sold for some time in Korea already. in Europe, I suppose in the USA too, we are going to wait some more time. I do not know how long, but nobody from the Korean guys writes anything about the iaudio 5. Please, share your experience with this player, whoever could already have it. talk about its good sides, talk about its flaws. just post. How does it feel having this player. compare it with the rivalry. I am sure that there are lots of guys that have it , we want it too, but we still do not know anything about it. Hier in Germany you can get already the g3 but the i5...i do not know.
thank you
I love it. Great controls. The buttons on the iAudio 4 have been replaced with two control wheels like the one on the main M3 unit.
Control is then just like the M3 remote. With some obvious additions, like the ability to change the back light.
I have the 256MB in Red ( I know 256MB is small, but it's an ideal partner to the 20GB M3 that I have). The colour is gorgeous and it is so light even with the battery.
So far used it for just about everything (FM, Direct encoding, etc) and all work like a dream. IMHO the audio is superb and the build quality is top notch.
THere is a small rubber pad on the rear which I can only assume covers a screw, but yesterday discovered this was really useful while on the train as it stops the iAudio 5 slipping on the table.
I am told it will be available in the UK next month.
OK. thank you . it a nice beginning to this thread. you can post later when you have something more to tell. :-)
What do you want to know????????
It was good. May be you can tell abouth the sound quality, and may be if you have some troubles with it. Some people say, they have clicks and pops on there iaudio 4.
yes I know. How do you find the recording quality of the internal micro? the owners of g3 say it it relatively bad.
What about some extra features that you like most? (bookmark-feature, playlist on the go an may be some other).
Can you for example create a playlist on the player while you listen to music? With the iriver you can anly do it if the player is stopped.
Thank you again.
How did you get your hands on the i5?
I suppose the IG88 is a lucky Korean guy. In Korea you can already have it.
Not Korean, I live in the UK and have contacts in Korea.
In reply to PLAM.MK I will have a look at some of the features you mentioned, but as I said the players sound quality is great.
Mic Recording - not tested
Playlists - you can create a DPL on the go like the iAudio M3
Direct encoding - sounds great
FM Tuner works fine - not tried recording yet
Book mark - no sign of a book mark feature but my manual is in Korean.
HI IG88. so you are a lucky British.
I am glad to read that you are going to post some more experience with the i5. I can't wait to see what you have to say.
Thanx

I'm waiting for your experiences too, IG88 :)
Does somebody also know if the 2gb version will come out simultaneously with the other versions or do we have to wait (weeks) for it just like the 2gb G3?
Ig88, thanks for your insight. Some addition questions I'm interested in:
What's the average battery life you get on average?
What would be the worst thing you would improve on the I5?
Thanks! Looking forward to the player. The one complaint I have is that U2 came out like half year ago with basically the same chip and stuff, so if the I5 doesn't come out soon, it would be an old product...
IG88 can you also tell, how much ist the capacity of your player. it is not all the 256 mb that you have, but a liitle bit less.
Hi IG88...yep, there are a lot of us waiting for the I5 review...i have looked closely at G3 and U2 and I4 and all that is missing is you sharing your insight on a I5 first hand....
i'm also interested on the bitrates and sample rates of a build in mic voice recording
bitrate: from kbps? to ?kbps
sample rate : from khz? to khz?
and what do you thing of a quality of voice recordings....
if you like you can post your recordings at : http://eng.iaudio.com/zeroboard/body_C.php
so..PLEEEASE..tell us more..i have a contact in Singapore who will buy it for me at low cost due to big sales for the Tibetan New Year which is around February 8
sooooo i don't have a lot of time......
cheers !
..sorry chinese new year feb 9
...Tibetan New Year also falls on the February 9th !!!!
so i choose Tibetan New Year....
cheers !
Delurking for my first post...
Just got the 512 MB version. I thought it was great in every way -- until I tried playing a song with a high variable bitrate. There was a constant stream of clicking, plopping noises. I tried some more songs encoded with similar settings, and it was the same thing. I've read that such noises have appeared on some Creative and Iaudio players, but nothing like what I'm hearing on my Iaudio 5. We're talking a loud click/pop every other second or so. Actually, it doesn't seem random, but it's like a distorted version of the bassy notes of the song, laid on top and time-shifted a couple of seconds.
And there's one song (192kbs) that stands out as even worse than the rest -- the sound keeps breaking up every few seconds, like listening to digital radio with bad reception so the sound keeps going on and off. It's like the player is stuttering.
Has anybody else experienced this or did I get a lemon?
I'll do some tests this weekend and rip with various bitrates to see if I can determine exactly what formats don't work. I've had no problems so far with 128 kbs mp3 or wma. Haven't tried ogg at all yet.

ok well in korea theres alot of complaints about the battery life and it being similar to the I4. many i5 users are returning, because of how the battery issue didnt change at all in the I5 from the I4. i really wanted this but now im gunna rely on getting some other player.
Well that's quite disappointing... Any specifics on what the battery life was? This is kinda surprising considering the U2 and G3 had minimal problems and I5 is using the same chip. This would kinda explain why the I5 isn't released yet, if they're having so many problems with it...
@Ishlin - did you upgrade to the newest firmware?
I really wanted this too. Right now I'm waiting to see whether the iriver H10 gets better and for the colors to come out. Anyone have other insights (who reads Korean?)
That's just weird ...
Have you got the 1.10 Firmware installed?
If the problems still presist why don't you try sending Cowon you mp3 files so that they can go check them out.
I've got firmware 1.10e installed, the one it came with. I haven't checked if there is a newer version available. Perhaps I should indeed contact Cowon.
I haven't used it long enough to say anything about battery life yet.
The 1.10 Firmware is the newest as far as I am aware ...

Couldn't wait any longer so succumbed to purchasing U2 yesterday. Decided the smaller form factor swayed it rather than any particular issue with the i5. There's bound to be some bugs and gremlins with new models, and even the odd lemon manufactured.
Aahhh... some good news. When I had filled the player with songs, I had used several different methods, including drag and drop of mp3:s for some, drag and drop of wma:s for some, AND the sync function in Windows Media Player 10 for some.
The ones that sound awful are the ones that were high bitrate mp3 and transferred to the player using the sync function in WMP10. Without my noticing, WMP10 converted them from high bitrate MP3 to 128 kbps wma when it transferred them to the player.
So here's a summary:
- When I rip from a CD to mp3 files (Lame 3.90) and then drag and drop to the player, the result is FINE, whatever the bitrate.
- And if I use WMP10 to rip a CD to wma 128 kpbs and then drag and drop to the player, it's also FINE.
But if I tell WMP10 to transfer a high bitrate mp3 to the player and forget to uncheck the setting that it may downconvert if it feels like it, it's WRETCHED!
So it's WMP10 that's the source of trouble. I'll just have to use other methods for transferring songs to the player. I can live with that.
Phew :-)

many users on the korean iaudio forums said the battery goes about 9 hours and average of 12-13 with ALL EFFECTS OFF.
Ishlin ....i can't wait to get my hands on I5....
what do you say about this battery issues ?
and bit and sample rates for voice rec with the built in mic....what are they:
bitrate: from kbps to kbps
sample rate : khz to khz
there isn't a manual on the net for the I5 but looking at the I4 they are:
bitrate: from 32kbps to 128kbps
sample rate : i think it's fixed at 44khz
for voice that's high, 16khz or 22khz will do the trick just fine
anyway this is important to me as i'll use it to record all day lectures, besides listening to music.....
thanks a bunch !
enjoy your I5 !
Here are the possible settings for voice recording:
wav: 8 kHz, 11 kHz, 16 kHz, 32 kHz.
mp3: Sample rate fixed at 44 kHz, bitrates 96 kbps, 112 kbps, 128 kpbs.
You can set the mic volume in 10 steps.

Comparing it to my previous player, an iRiver ifp-195 (the old prism-shaped model) that died on me recently, I like this one better. The sound is at least as good (going by memory), it's a little smaller and lighter, the menu system is more logical (not a difficult task :-) ), the screen is bigger and better, it's UMS compliant. (It comes with a tiny USB adapter by which you can plug it in to a computer without a cable.)
Ergonomically, it seems pretty well thought through. When you hold it in your right hand, the thumb and index finger fall naturally on the two slider buttons, which is where you do most of the navigation.. The slider buttons work pretty well, although you have to be a little careful to push them straight in and not at an angle.
Won't be able to comment on the battery for a while. Besides, I normally use rechargables...
:o(
That's a big step back in voice rec department, maybe the quality is better using WAV, but space consumption is big.
actually it is the same as G3 which at first had bitrate 96kbps;112kbps;128kbps, fixed sample rate at 44Khz, mp3 format , using the new firmware it's 8-32KHz in ADPCM WAV ( 4bit compressed )
i was hoping that I5 will continue relatively good options that I4 was offering in voice rec :
bitrate from 32kbps - 128kbps
sample rate fixed 44Khz
format .mp3
there is a post where I4 owner is saying that he can get 23hrs of voice rec with 48kbps and 44Khz with a 512mb I4, thats pretty neat, 46hrs 1Gb, that's great.
It would be good if most if not all manufacturers would implement the same options in voice rec. until something better comes up. There are even mp3 players that save your voice rec. in WMA format, great for saving space but I don't know which bit and sample rates they have to offer.
I wanted to see on I5 at least the same options as I4 or as IFP7xx or IFP8xx etc.
They have wide selection in voice rec:
bitrate: from 32kbps to 128kbps
sample rate: 11khz;12khz;16khz;22khz;24khz;32khz;44khz
FM recordings you go from 32kbps to 320kbps and also you can change sample rates.
And now you can have "data on the go" with a new UMS ( usb memory storage ) firmware, tricky part is when once upgraded to a UMS firmware your bitrate for voice, fm, and line in recordings drops to a maximum of 96kbps. I don't know why they did that!?
I didn't want to advertise iriver series or iaudio, I don't have any of them but I really wanted to love G3, when I found out the bit and sample rates for voice rec I discovered I4, but looks and USB 1.1 were a turn off, then seeing I5 was love at first sight. Now I'm really disappointed especially discovering from your post that it has a small USB adapter, which is great , there's not much point in dragging usb cable for your small portable device.
..well, anyway, thanks for a swift and great replay, I'll keep looking at that bit and sample rates options, for now iriver looks great in that department,
enjoy your I5,
all the best !
P.S.
Really important question ( maybe that will point me to I5 ) :
1. If I5 has a remaining time displayed when you do voice recordings, could you tell me, how many hours of recordings can you get in wav, set to 16khz and 32khz with your 512mb ?
2. When you mentioned recordings in mp3, are they for the FM and LINE IN recordings or you can do your voice rec in mp3 with available options in bit and sample rate ?

1. When you're recording, the player gives the remining time in small text at the bottom of the screen. With wav 16kHz you get about 18 hours and with wav 32 kHz about 9 hours.
2. There are the same alternatives for all 3 types of recording (mic, line-in, FM), but they're set in separate menus. So you can do voice recordings in MP3. With 96 kbps, you get about 12 hours.

I just ordered my own i5 :D
and this is my first post on this site!
As many other anxious upcoming owners of the i5 I also want to spill my guts on this forum. So here goes:
I've been reading through the forums and haven't been able to find comments on i5's ruggedness. I had in mind that I would take the player with me to various outdoor sports: jogging, cycling etc. Now I know you aren't supposed to use sensitive electronic devices in harsh conditions, but I want to. So what I wanted know is, can this player handle moist and cold conditions. And also if anybody uses their player in such conditions, what kind of protective measures do they take to protect their i5? Is the carrying case all that is needed?
thanks in advance
Hello mantis99, I've used the player in cold conditions but not for exercising or moist conditions. The manual warns you not to let the player get wet. Like I say on the other thread, all that the included case is good for is protection from scratches, so for use in harsh conditions, I'd try to find some other case.
