Hi Everyone. I bought my son an X5 for Christmas.
We are struggling! Can somebody explain to me in simple terms how to take music from a CD and install it in the X5. I realise this is basic stuff but I've read the manual and I can't find an explanation. (I'm also technically illiterate!)
Sorry to bother you with this but if someone can help I will be really grateful.
Thanks. :)

First you have to rip the music off the CD and convert it either to .WAV or .MP3 file.To do this, you need a program like audiograbber (http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net/) or musicmatch jukebox or any of the hundreds of similar programs.
So after you convert the music you want onto your hard disk, then you can transfer the files from your hard disk to your X5 in the "MUSIC" folder.
If something sounds Greek to you, ask again so that i (i am Greek after all) or someone else can explain :)

Thanks for that. Do we not use the software that came with the X5 to rip the music?

Well I see that using JetAudio, in the FILE menu, there is an option called Convert CD to MP3.
Did you try that ?
I guess you just put the CD in, then you choose the above option, and then it prompts you to choose which music files you want to be converted.
Absolutely you can use JetAudio!
I haven't used it myself (since I just got my X5 for Christmas, and had loads of CD's converted already), but I played around with it, and it seemed very simple to follow.

If you don't want to download or install any programs, windows media player can rip tracks from CDs too.
How do you burn tracks from Windows media player to the X5?
The trouble with using windows media player is that you have to be careful that you don't end up with a load of files in messy folders, and without proper file names. this is important: on the x5 you have to know exactly where your music is on the computer, so you can copy it over to the x5. On windows media player, you browse by "tags" on the mp3, which is info contained IN the mp3 about the title, genre of music, album. So with wmp, you can have all your tracks in one huge folder, and just browse by tag. With the x5 you browse by folder, as it doesn't read the tags. So it's best, when you rip from cd, to keep things nice and ordered from the start! Do a search on this site for suggestions of folder structures (eg one folder for dance, another for classical, etc); different people do it different ways.
If you use a program like audiograbber (free, and suggested above), it will name your folder automatically by the artist and album, which helps alot. Once you set up audiograbber right, it's simply a one step process for ripping - put the cd in the pc, audiograbber goes on the web and automatically gets the artist and track info, and rips and encodes to mp3 in one step.
Let us know how you get on!

Thanks for the help guys. I tried Jet Audio last night with little success. I'll download audiograbber.
I have a TVR Tuscan. It's less complicated than this b*%^*! thing!

You may want to try out a little program called Media Monkey. It'll gather all the music on your PC and it'll actually sync all the tunes to your mp3 player in a folder based order. It's neat and very easy.
Try CDex, avaliable at cdexos.sf.net
It encodes to Ogg/Vorbis, MP3. Flac (with a plugin), and WMA. Plus, with a touch of fiddling, you can make it automatically put it in the directory structure that you want.
BTW... I reccomend Artist/Album/Track - Title
The above Audiograbber link is a little tricky, try using http://www.audiograbber.com-us.net. Check out the guided tour for instructions on how to rip the CD.
Also, be weary of 'protected' CDs that prevents you from ripping the CD.
Do you guys know how to move the files on to the X5?
Thanks for that. Do we not use the software that came with the X5 to rip the music?
Yes you can. JetAudio. Not JetShell.

Here's what you need to do:
1. Insert music CD
2. Open up jetAudio and click on 'rip'.
3. If necessary select drive.
4. Select the directory you want the music saved to. You can save it
directly to the X5 but someone said it's bad for the HD to do this. So you can save it to the directory of your choice on your computer.
5. Select the file naming option
6. Select the music format. There are different arguments for why you might select mp3, wav, ogg.
7. Select all tracks and check that the album and song info is correct
8. Press start.
9. Once jetAudio has finished ripping the CD, if you've saved it to your computer, open up windows explorer and drag the music across to your x5 (oh yeah, you should have your x5 connected to the computer via the subpack). When the X5 is connected to the computer it shows up as an external drive in windows explorer so it's no problem dragging anything you want to and from the device.
The so-called 'instruction' manual is a joke.

a bad joke, mind ya *g*
the nice thing about audiograbber is that it gathers the information for id3 tags and filenaming from the net, and it saves at a higher quality than that §%"§% media player *g*

I'm sorry, but did you try searching the forum first or even google. Transferring files to the X5 is the easiest thing to do. If you do't have windows Xp, did you install the driver on the included CD(which also comes with ripping software)?
Yeah, hust use jetaudio, i think it's very straight forward. Hope you'll get it done (see above instructions) Big hurray @ Charon, as clear as the sun!
