How do you update firmware?

Is there an idiot's guide to updating firmware please? Also, is there any real need to do it (I'm not bothered about the id3 tags). I bought my X5 about a month ago - not sure which firmware version I have.

ID3 browsing hasn't been implemented yet anyway.

The only thing that has been included in new firmware is mainly DRM music (although how well this works differs from person to person) If you don't have/use any DRM music then I'd say don't bother updating, I don't.

As for updating - there are a few times on here where people have asked exactly the same question and had the answer. Just try the search function. This only took me about 30 seconds to find:

Or you just go to Cowon's website and look in the FAQ there and one of the first things that shows up is how to upgrade the firmware on the X5 too:

Conditions for Firmware upgrade
1. Please download a newest firmware from iAUDIO.com then unzip the file and save it to Temp folder.
2. For firmware upgrade user must connect USB cable directly PC's USB port. Don't use any USB Hub while firmware upgrade.
3. iAUDIO should contain at least 1/2 of battery life or fully charged.
This condition is describing while device and USB cable or AC adaptor is not connected.

(Very Important) During the firmware upgrade, do not turn off your PC or unplug USB cable.

Upzip firmware file and select file(*.bin) then click right mouse button. Choose 'Copy'


Connect iAUDIO to USB cable through Sub pack (or Cradle)then paste file(*.bin) into FIRMWARE folder.
Connect iAUDIO main device and Sub pack (or Cradle) then connect to USB cable.

Paste file into Firmware folder in iAUDIO.

Disconnect iAUDIO with PC through 'Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device' on Windows tray menu.


Unplug USB cable then plug in AC adaptor to iAUDIO.


Firmware upgrade process can be checked by Main LCD. iAUDIO will turn off with new firmware when the firmware upgrade succeed.


Firmware version info is appear on right side of LCD when the iAUDIO's power is on, Also, you can check the firmware version info from 'MENU > Information'.
