I am receiving an X5L 30GB for christmas. I had a few questions I have been thinking about and I would love to have them answered. Any help would be appreciated

does the screen scratch (will I need to buy screen protectors)?
how durable is it in my pocket (will I need to buy a zcover)?
will it tell me how much free space i have inside the GUI?
are their different languages I can choose from?
is a joystick problem something very feasible, or is it a rare defect?
how do you arrange your music/video/pictures/text/data in the X5?
using iriverter I have been copying dvd one scene at a time; I was wondering how you guys do it, do you copy one scene, several scenes, or all scenes at once? does book marking work with videos as well?
are videos with darker scenes harder to see?

again, thanks in advance for any help. any other problems you might have faced would also be a lot of help. :bigthumbs

1. The screen is glass. It will scratch given something harder than it. The zCover has a plastic screen protector. The X5 also comes with some stick-on protectors.
2. The X5 is pretty durable but you can still scratch it eventually if you have metal against metal or constant rubbing. Get a zCover if you are worried.
3. Free space can be found on the information menu selection.
4. Tags and menus in English, Chinese, Hangul, Japanese, Russian, Greek.
5. Joystick problems depend
6. Movies you can arrange however you like - I organise by seasons for series, music, by artist and album.
7. DVD ripping is a personal choice thing. I don't really do movies so splitting isn't as big an issue. However, searching through a single movie is painful on the X5 and whenever the X5 shuts down and restarts, you start at the beginning of the movie again. So you might split a movie up if you expect this sort of viewing pattern.
8. You can adjust the contrast and brightness. But it is LCD and depending on lighting, can be difficult to view.

1. The screen won't scratch if you take care of it. I did put a screen protector on that came with the zcover.

2. It's quite durable, the aluminium case doesn't scratch too easy. However I've put a zcover on it as I want to keep it extra special safe and cause I wanted a belt clip as I can't fit anything in my pockets.

3. It does tell you. There's a information in the main menu which tells you things like how much free space there is; what firmware your using etc. Think there might be somewhere else that tells you to but I can't remember off the top of my head - the unit does tell you though :)

4. There's 2 languages for the menu - English and Korean and 6 different languages for the tags to be displayed in (on my X5 anyway)

5. I've had no problems with the joystick. Worked exactly as I would expect it to.

6. In terms of my preferance or how the unit sees it? The X5 has a seperate folder for music/video/pictures/text and you put each item into it's relevant folder (music files in music folder and so on) However you can create whatever structure you like after that (so in my Music folder there is a seperate folder for each Artist and in each Artist folder there is another folder for each Album) You can create as many folders anywhere on the drive you like (from within windows/linux/mac OS) but the X5 will only show those that it can read. Photo's can only be read from a specifc section of the main menu and can't be viewed while listening to music etc.

7. I just copy the whole film/episode off of the DVD in one job lot. If it's a long film that I'm encoding then I'll sometimes make iriverter automatically split the file into segments as the X5 can not bookmark videos at all (slight annoyance but one I can live with)

8. They can be though I've never had any problems myself (not watched too many dark movies on it though to be honest)

Hope this helps.... any more questions?

My music is mostly in one folder, since I don't generally like albums as a whole. I have around 10 or so actually albums. My idea was to arrange it like so:

DIR:
Albums
Depeche Mode
Playing the Angel
01 A Pain That I'm Used To
02 John the Revelator
....
Incubus
Science
01 Redefine
02 Vitamin
....
Morning View
01 Nice To Know You
02 Circles
.....
Music
311 - All Mixed Up
311 - Amber
....
Zwan - Ride A Black Swan
Zwan - Settle Down
Videos
Drum Clinic Solo (Mike Portnoy).x5
Tonight Show Standup.x5
OS
File 01
File 02

Im just curious how everyone else arranges their music. I want all my music accessible, so I can find a specific song easily. How would I accomplish this? Any ideas?

I generally listen to albums rather then just individual tracks (though I have been known from time to time..) so mine is like this:

Music\Artist\Album\track.mp3

I find this easy as I've always known what album the tracks are on that I want to listen to and even using things like winamp I'm always selecting by artist then album then track so this is just the same to me.

and that makes complete sense. but I have a lot of just tracks. I suppose I could split it up into artist beginning with a-f, g-m and so on. thats my best idea. hmm...

i also order mine in MUSIC\Artist\Album\#-Song
I'd definitely recommend to at least put various tracks of a same artist into one artist folder like you last mentioned. that'd avoid a lot of scrolling. then for artists you only have one or two songs of just make another folder like Various artists or something and through them all into that.
and the screen is pretty tough. i haven't put a cover on it and really no scratches at all from just normal use in my pocket and whatever. definitely better than ipod screens i've seen and others as far as scratching goes.

awesome, cause thats what I am worried about. I will likely have this thing In my pocket, and I don't want the screen to scratch. I figure I will buy a zcover, but now question what color. the ice white one seems real nice, but I have heard it makes the player sound cheap. its either that, black, or gray....

i have two folders, one for artist that i own entire cds of which is most of my music, and one for random mp3s. That eleminates some of the mess.

I think you'll find that the zcover doesn't really alter the sound

Anyway there's a thread on here where people have taken photo's of their X5 in the real world with the zcover on. To be honest if I was getting one now I think I'd go for the ice clear one. When I originally put the black cover on I thought it made it look like a lump of black plastic and look a bit naff. Now I've got used to it a bit more and I quite like it (especially like the screen protector) Really feel that my DAP is well protected which is what I want.

The X5 comes with screen covers?? are they any good or just crap to throw away?

It's just some thin adhesive plastic, like "Contact". The same sort of idea as the sticky plastic screen protectors for Palms. They are ok. I like my zCover better.
