I searched for it and didn't find anything, so i thought i would ask. do you think it is possible to convert the X5 to an X5L by aquiring an X5L battery and back plate? or is there more difference between the two than just the battery and back plate?

Your assumption is absolutely right!
There is no differnce between th M3/X5 and the M3L/X5L models, besides the larger backplate and the second battery. Anything else is the same.

To prove this, just have a look at the M3L-board, it's the absolutely same like the M3 board: (see the M3 V1.4-print on the board - it doesn't say M3L!!!)

The wires coming out of the battery are goin' straight to the second battery (has app. the size of a 1.8" HDD)
But there could be some different electronics in the smaller battery - but I'm not sure about this!

But since the basic electronics of the X5 are simply a M3-copy (besides the screen), the chances are really high that such conversions could be done in the future.
But only after your warranty has exceeded. If you're about to buy an X5 now and to convert it into an X5L because you want to save money, you should better buy the X5L instead.

Interesting. I bought my X5 on ebay so i am not sure if Cowon will honor my warranty, it was an unopened box, and the warranty card is not filled out, so no date of purchase. how much do you think it would cost to get an X5L back plate and battery?

Battery replacement is said to cost less than 50$/€ including the working-time and shipping. So I'll assume a X5L battery and backplate should cost about the same since no work has to be paid.

Can i buy them directly from Cowon, or are there 3rd party sellers?

I'm sure you'll find out! Ask iAudio God, maybe he knows?

Anyone have forsure info on this? power ratings for both the same? will i blow my X5 if i hook up the X5L battery? does iAudio sell the battery and case pieces as replacement parts? if iAudio God could help me out on this that would be great, as it seems you would know best. any help is greatly appreciated.

i have asked the same question on the front page and it seems that either no one knows or no one will answer me. ive been looking into this issue and found out that cowon did sell a user replaceable battery for the m3 for $30. however, i couldn't find any third party selling m3 batteries. so right now it looks like your best bet is with cowon. ive also looked up pics of people taking apart their m3, x5, and ipods and it seems the m3 has the exact same design as the x5. it also looks like the ipod 3g or 4g battery will fit inside the x5. i dont really know if this is definitive yet, but it does look promising so far

another thing to consider aside from size is power rating, because you don't want the battery sending more V than the board can handle. my friend suggested adding a fuse between the board and the battery just incase.

i think theyre identical boards. someone who took apart the x5 and x5l said that the only difference is that the x5l has 2 batteries. aside from that, i think all li-ion batteries send the same voltage to the board. the only difference between these are the capacities.
