View Full Version : Filename length

I used to have one of the RCA Lyra 2780's (until it was stolen from my work desk) and that had a limit to the length on a filename. Like everybody knows, emo music (i hate emo kids, but that's another story) has songs with names that are whole sentences and have nothing to do with the song's message itself.
Is there a cap on the length of a filename or the ID3 tag on the X5?

There is a cap as far as how much of the ID3 tag info gets displayed on the screen (the X5 just cuts off everything past xx number of characters), but I'm not aware of any filename length limitations. I'm guessing they're in line with the standard FAT file system limitations.
Are you certain about that? I always imagined that the X5 scrolled album, artist and song titles to their fullest length if they were too long for the screen?
I'm fairly, but not absolutely sure that beyond a certain length the tags get truncated.

I am 100% certain. At least mine cuts them off after a certain number of characters. I use ID3 v2 mostly, which allows for longer tags, but still the X5 cuts them off.
I'm pretty sure that the previous model, the M5, scrolls long titles. No X5 for me then (I know, I know, but for me it's important).
Thanks anyhow for getting back to me; it's much appreciated.

The X5 scrolls titles...
Edit: It needs to be turned on manually (I believe) Either way, I have it working fine on mine.

The X5 also scrolls long titles and album names, but if it's very long, it gets truncated.
Looking at the manual, in "Settings -- Display," "Album Scroll" and "Title Scroll" are mentioned. Is that something to do with it?
Just to get this straight, it does scroll song and album titles so long as they're not too long. Have you any idea how many characters roughly that is? Oh yes, are artist names also scrolled?
Thanks!

52 Characters
Thinking on, I think that 52-character limit is quite possibly because of the file-based system iAudio employs on the X5. I do know that iRiver players, which also used a file-based system, had a 52-character limit on file paths.
Thanks once again for everyone's help.
This is the songs filename:
Gravity (Hybrid's Love From Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysilio gogogoch Remix)
The ID3 TITLE TAG and the FILENAME cuts off like this:
Gravity (Hybrid's Love From Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgog
Including the spaces, thats 51 characters.

Yeah, I checked it out and I too only have 51 characters, however on the songs that I checked, oddly enough, the 52nd character would be a space (coincidence?)
Hopefully in the next firmware upgrade they can increase that. I had an RCA Lyra 2780 (stolen) that had a firmware upgrade that allowed for longer ID3 tag displays. We should post we want that in the firmware threads for longer ID3 tag display
According to the manual song names cut off at 52 characters.

that's a lot of characters!
Not really. I still have alot of songs that have the name cut off. Hopefully it mgiht get fixed in future? Either way, it doesn't matter to me too much, as long as I can recognise the song name.
