There was a debate in another thread on this forum regarding the use of punctuation and spelling. What is the general opinion on this issue? Personally, I take the side of "a forum is a formal dicussion - take a few extra seconds to proofread and make yourself as readable as possible." Isn't it more polite to type things out instead of using shorthand?

ok well obviously if you have ever read any of my posts u know my typos are atrocious and i really will try to clean that up, but come on a formal forum? this is about mp3's and it just seems like as long as you can understand what the person says, its not really a big deal. this isnt english class.

I'm not really trying to argue a specific point. I'm just curious about the opinions of others. It seems that most people do consider it more polite to type things out. I tend to agree.

You're right, this isn't English class. If it is that difficult to type a few extra keys and hold down the shift key once in a while, and to scam over your writing as you go, then don't bother. It's just polite to do so, not required. Most people, unless suffering from some form of handicap, should find it fairly simple to use a keyboard properly. I don't mean to sound rude; I just don't see the trouble.

I don't want to argue with you. I am ignorant of why people would not revise their work before posting. Obviously I came across as rude.

I didn't mean to offend you.

it's just a matter of taste. and while, for me, i would want to spell things out and be grammatically correct (for the most part :D), it might not be so for others. as long as their posts are readable and are above a 6th grader's knowledge of grammar, i have no qualms with the poster's writing. as long as they can express themselves well with what they do say then it's fine by me. shorthand is just easier for some people.

I vote yes. I hate it when people go:
I think taht yoo R so Kool, and shuld git a awaard.
Or the like.

It would definately be a good courtesy to others, and would not take you more than a few seconds.

However, I can fully understand bad grammer if english is your second language. I just hope that over time you will improve your grammer.

Exactly, what you (not you, BoSox) are saying is "I can't be bothered to make myself appear intelligent and respectable to others", in which case I can't really be bothered to take you seriously (as serious as the internet gets, anyway). The occasional mistake and inexperience with the language are exceptions, of course.

I can be bothered to make myself appear intelligent, I just dont feel that shorthand does the opposite, i think it porbbaly just gives away my age.

I personally make an effort not to use too many abbreviations

But then I'm not pretentious and pompous to care if others are illegible

Remember that there are also people from non-english speaking countries on these forums. :winker: So for some of them it is a little bit harder to form a correct english sentence.

I'm with Haze, but I do try to be correct in my spelling/punctuation/grammar. If I'm not, please correct me.. I can only learn from that. :bigthumbs

lol, we get tons of email from spelling nazis for our sloppy news posting style at dapreview. why people bother to point it out, i'll never understand... it's an informal blog, they're not paying to read it, and obviously we don't give a flying fck about spelling. :D

btw i'm most infamous for never spelling "thier" right. now i do it on purpose :P
