View Full Version : Defective X5's

I had to send my X5 back to Amazon twice. Both times the player was defective out of the box. Amazon informs me that they will not send another one but rather will simply refund my money since apparently the majority of X5's they have in stock are defective. For the 5 minutes or so that I was able to use this player, I really liked it but I'm worried. Perhaps the problem was simply with one particular batch at Amazon but...I'm not sure what to do. I guess I need reassurance about the X5.

I've had mine for several months now, absolutely no problems. I may have gotten lucky though

With more than a month of usage, my x5 just freezed a couple of times, and it will always return to normality with just a push in the reset button.
It looks like a very strong piece of technology...

Just to elaborate: It was the 30gig model. The first time, I turned it on and the screen would only say "HDD Error" and nothing else. It was unusable. I sent it back and received a new one yesterday and the navigation joystick wouldn't toggle down, so I couldn't scroll down or turn down the volume. Cowon tech support told me to send it back and I then received an email from Amazon saying they would simply refund my money since this has been happening a lot with the X5.

shucks. i ordered the same... at least amazon is good with returns, although this is rather unfortunate (and disheartening). well, there's nothing for me to do except wait. hopefully i'll have better luck - if not, i'll return for cash back and perhaps make the x5 purchase from newegg.

you never know - third time's a charm, right? good luck.

Kind of scary. I have the 20gb version and have had no problems. Seems like overall they are fine. I wonder why amazon is having so many problems.

Defective joystick on my first one.
Defective power/hold button on my second one.
Waiting for my third one now...

My first two X5l 30Gb went back, but the third one has made me feel like it was worth the wait.

I've been waiting for the X5 for a while to come out in shops in Australia...
I went to an electronic shop and surprisingly, I saw a demo 20GB model... I tried playing around with it, but that one seemed to have crashed... it constantly had the hour glass turning on the screen and couldn't get out of it... I even tried pushing and holding the power slider fully up, and it wouldn't even turn off. So that sorta put me off getting it, but Im waiting for a 30GB model anyway.

I may just be trying to spot the problems, but a lot of people seem to be having major defects with their x5s. This is scaring me a little about getting one since I really don't like having to deal with customer service if I can help it. I know that on a forum you're going to see an exaggerated number of problems because people come here for help, but on other forums it seems like there are less major defects in the products.

The reason why I plan on trading in my HD5 for an X5 is due to its laughable build quality. And now the X5 has similar problems...

Just a little bit more competency from the two manufacuturers would have prevented this issue. More efficient testing and better materials used in the production of the units would have been smarter options.

UGH.

No Problems. Loaded it completely full to nothing and back and back about 3 times. No problems. Near to no fragmentation. Sounds great. Looks Great. No Problems at all. Not even ONE freeze up yet.

Have owned my X5 for 4 months or so now, ZERO problems.
use it at work, built a mount in my car, use it camping, hook it up to my shelf system.
I even dropped it on my garage floor from about 4 feet up, no problems.
Either their new units have poor build quality, or youre cursed (or PEBKAP).

no need to get worried about it. there is always a small percentage of defective product in any model, and any brand. visit iLounge (iPods), Riovolution.com (Rio), Nomadness.net (Creative), MisticRiver.net (iRiver), etc and you'll see plenty of the same. people who get a bad player are always going to be more vocal about thier experience. just buy from a reputable seller and in the unlikely event you do get a bad one, you can simply exchange it for a good one.

i always have to remind myself that looking at issues and problems on a site such as this is like walking into an emergency room and trying to find healthy patients. i'm still very much looking forward to receiving my x5 from amazon, bad batch or no. scratchy clearly had 2 very different issues with the 2 machines, so i'm guessing it's just bad luck more than anything.

hey, that's what the warranty is for - at least i know i'll have a perfect product at some point within the next 12 months!

if my recollection is accurate, it seems that a vast majority of these HDD failing x5's posted on these boards comes from amazon.

Thanks for all the feedback. A few of you mentioned having to return the X5 twice but were happy the third time around. Did you buy from Amazon? They told me they would not send a third unit out to me. I think I'm just going to buy from B&H since I live in NYC and it seems to be the only store selling it. I should say that I'm still looking forward to it and hope that nothing happens this time. If it does...

Only problem I have had, which isn't that big of a deal is that the screen is a little crooked. Not something to send it back about, but it is a complaint.

No Problems with my X5, and the story about "happening a lot" is very strange.
First: because it is the first time I hear about this and I try to read everything on this forum.
Second: that bad marketing, you are supporting/selling a product which you ar enot backing, bad bad

well, scratchy, i just received my 30gig from amazon and so far, so good. it's charging now, but i briefly put it on, navigated the menu a bit and listened to the demo song. hope you have better luck - did you pick one up from b&h?

Hi, aandru. I'm happy to report that the one I got from B&H works like a charm, though the headphones are atrocious (but who cares. I'll get better ones.). I do have a couple issues which should probably be posted elsewhere but I'll give them a try here:
1. Because a lot of my music comes from file transfer software (ahem) the id tags on many of my sounds files are incomplete etc. This isn't a problem when using windows media player or real player etc because both automatically sort by artist, album song etc thus making things easily searchable. But when I dragged and dropped all my music from "my shared folder" on my c drive into the X5 it only organizes by album and song and NOT by artist at all. This makes things rather difficult. Any ideas? I realize this is a probably a problem of my own doing since I'm not the tech saviest guy around but I was just wondering.

2. I have no movie folder on the X5 but it does appear on my comp when the device is hooked up. ??

can't help since this is my first DAP and i'm ripping & compressing CDs for the first time. not worrying about tags at all, just arranging them in folders by artist-title... hopefully someone else can help you there.

as for the movie folder, i don't have the x5 in front of me (i refuse to take it out until my case arrives!), but i noticed the music folder was not available to me on the x5 when that folder was empty.

sorry not to be more useful. my biggest concern right now is encoding 400-500 cds, so i've got a bit of a project on my hands.

hey scratchy,
The X5 doesn't sort your music at all. It simply shows the folder structure which was present in the folder you copied your music from. So basically it is working like windows explorer. So you can sort it the way you want it to.

RG, is there any software that will organize my files automatically? Unfortunately, I can't drag or drop from real player or windows media. So i guess I'm wondering if there is a way to reorganize them and then put them in an explorer folder for dragging and dropping into the X5.
