Does anyone have a clue as to how to set this up or where Cowon might have hidden the documentation for it?

I see the Call Settings screen under the Settings, but there is no info on what the Account registration process is supposed to be.

Edit - Google "SIP calling" for some leads on how to configure this. Currently above my technical knowledge and expertise, but looks like what could be an interesting little project to get it configured and working on the D3's new native VoIP app.

I'm not sure If I should make a new thread but it's related to VoIP apps. Anyone used their D3 for VoIP call yet? It's uncomfortable to use because of protruding edges. Do you guys use it with the COWON LCD Protective Film?

I figure it out. You add VoIP account like Skype to the VoIP app. When make calls you'll use skype or when services you have. You'll get dialer as an option when you use it you'll get mobile network not connected error.

Any way I approach it, I get the "no mobile service" message, or something like that too.

On the Cowon US web site, this VoIP service is the first feature touted as part of the "complete rebirth with Gingerbread", so it apparently is no small deal in their eyes. It goes on to state that feature is available "by just adding your address list to the D3". Uhhhh....hello, can you hear me now? Hello? hello?

The whole thing seems to be a little long on marketing and short on actual instructions and functionality.

I just checked the U.S website and I see what you mean. Do you use your D3 with the screen film? It's kinda uncomfortable to put the D3 against your ear.

No - don't use a screen film. And I haven't really had occasion to use it in the phone position long enough to see how comfortable it may or may not be.

And it's not that the VoIP function is anything that I would necessarily use that much, but if it's supposed to be one of the "new and improved" features with Gingerbread and Cowon's premium PMP experience, I'd at least be able to think I could get it configured to work. At this point, I guess I'm just looking for some justification as to why I dropped the extra $80USD for the D3 over the J3.

I'd sure like to see the VOIP app working. All I get is "Mobile Network Not Available".

I too am wondering about the voip app. It would be somewhat useful to make phone calls on d3.

If doesn't work alone. You need skype. The Korean version comes with their own VOIP app. The VOIP app that comes with the D3 just links it to another one. In my case skype. http://www.kakao.com/talk/en That's the apps on the Korean version. I'm sure they intend you to use that with the VOIP app.

So assuming I have a skype account, how does the voip app get configured to use it?

After installing Skype and open the VOIP app then go to the contact tab, press middle setting control and add account. You get sync the contacts. Now when use the app to dial it'll ask if you want to use dialer or Skype out to make the call. I'm guessing the dialer in android native app.

If someone can get it working, I'd be interested to hear. I thought you got that far before, Snakebite, and still got the "No Mobile Network" message when you tried to call.

_______________

Edit - btw, I populated the Account Settings fields under Call Settings using a free account I created at sip2sip.com. Not sure if that has the same effect as using a Skype account or not, but all of the requested info in Account Settings was supplied to me when I established the SIP account and I entered in the appropriate fields. Still though - get the Mobile Network Not Available message when trying to call.

This do-it-yourself tech support is one of the most annoying things about Cowon, but oddly, it has kept me coming back to them over the years. I guess it's the same kind of rush as trying to build your own kit car rather than going down to the iDealership and just buying a perfectly good one that is fully functional when you drive it off the lot.

I don't think the dialer app is meant to be use over wi-fi hence the mobile network error. Maybe it look for cellular service. but you can use other VOIP with it. Did you try the http://www.kakao.com/talk/en ?

Edit: It seems like the VOIP app it like a VOIP apps manager. It syncs contacts from other VOIP apps.
