Guy's i just got my cowon and it is pretty good, but im used to listen to music Very loud, maybe too loud i am not sure, but i used to use my psp with a program which bypasses the normal volume and makes it like 15 times louder which is amazing, the cowon quality is much better, but with the psp louder i seemed to enjoy it more. I know the setting's and stuff ive messed around and still no change? any hacks or settings to bypass the volume? Many Thanks.

P.S - Do .Avi work as videos or does it have to be a .mp4?

The device definitely is loud enough, I can't listen past about 2/3 to 3/4 of the volume dependent on earphone sensitivity. In the set up make sure it is assigned to USA or China, anything other than Europe. European volume limits (including UK) are set by law but not outside. It makes no difference to the unit at all, so just set it outside UK.

If you have already done this, then you want it too loud and are sacrificing sound quality for volume so probably bought the wrong brand.

Thank you for the reply, i have found to put it on Hip-Hop it is the loudest and best option and such, but ill try the region outside Europe like you said, and it is loud enough on the hip-hop mode i can live with that since it is good quality as well, i like the crystal clear option too, makes everything sound good, its a good player great battery just got it today aswell, thanks for your advice though

If you set it outside Europe, the volume is very loud. Another option is to follow my guide posted up and install the Sense UCI. Then in the settings you can override the maximum volume to its fullest level. Trust me at those levels nobody half sensible could ever stand it.

It is good you like one of the presets though a far better sound mix can be obtained to suite your taste by playing with the User EQ sets.

I wasn't being sarcastic by the way when I said that possibly the Cowon brand wasn't for you, it has a clean sound that is perfect for pristine listening but doesn't necessarily appeal to everyone. It has a sound you either take to or reject fairly quickly.

I genuinely do recommend the Sense UCI, it really does enhance the player (as do the Lynx, Picture and Leaf ones but they don't do anything for it as a music player). See the thread I set up in this forum sub-group and give it a try. It will help you optimise the volume too.

With the Lynx UCI you can also associate sound EQ settings with different profiles, so you could use a profile for different genres or as I do for listening on speakers or earphones. It gives nice customised control.

If I can help further feel free to ask any questions or post up.

I tried putting the 1.8 sense folder into the X7 Flash/System/UI etc... and let it install again and when it went on nothing had changed the same thing? i think im doing something wrong can some help me?

1. You don't need to download each version of Sense, just the latest.
2. You need to unzip the download, using Extract in Windows or your native tool.
2. On the X7 Flash drive when connected put the files into System/Flash UI
3. Disconnect and I also suggest doing a full Database update from the 'Settings' menu.
4. Then when you go into the music player, click the top centre of the screen - you should then be able to access all the Sense settings I wrote about in the guide. If not, you haven't copied it across properly yet.

Let me know how you go on.

I'm pretty sure I would have set mine to Europe initially but how do I get to change it now?

I have Lynx/Sense/Leaf installed and the max setting is 40, is that already the max or is there more?

Thanks

The maximum volume is 40 however I assume the level this produces varies by the region chosen. You may have to reset your device to its factory settings, then go through the initial set-up again.

At the risk of sounding like a numpty...I have the Sense UI and have set the max volume to 40. How do I change the region set from UK to say, USA or China? I've gone into system settings and selected to load default settings but still can't see an option anywhere to set the region. I've googled to no avail.

Can someone let me know please? I'm sure its screamingly obvious but I can't see it anywhere...[wacko]

As I posted before unless you set the region to one outside Europe at the start, you will need to back-up the contents of your player (including the System/Flash folder with the UCIs in on the Flash drive) and then do a reset to factory settings.

If you format the FLASH drive or delete its contents, I believe the player recreates them upon next boot and then you can set the region again to such as USA or China.

However I have never done this myself. It is vital that you back up all the FLASH drive contents so that in the situation where you needed to copy it back (and certainly the UCI folders) you then could.

I have no doubt that the above information is correct, but ... you only need to remove the param.cfg file from the device's SYSTEM folder on the FLASH drive and re-start the player.

See here (http://www.anythingbutipod.com/forum/showthread.php?p=521879&highlight=param.cfg#post521720)for further info.

Fantastic, thanks for confirming that Gubba. A low risk option is always to be used in preference.

Hi

Thanks - it was the "reset to factory settings" bit I couldn't find how to do anywhere!

However, just followed Gubba's advice and bingo, all done. Many thanks both! :)

I envisage it makes a substantial difference to the maximum volume - any observation Flip Martian?

Yes it does, It's good to know the powers that be have nothing better to do than protect our delicate European ears :D

Hi

Yes indeed - tested it out on the way to work (not in earshot of others!). A big difference. I use PX-200 IIs and I've been a bit frustrated that the volume is not quite loud enough (impedance of 'phones perhaps, not sure) while having volumes on full. However, now I have plenty of headroom and room for more (full volume is not something I would use at all now.) It increases volume I would guess around 20% or more perhaps. Very pleased now. With that and the Sense interface, I now have the perfect player. :)

Great. I knew the Cowon was volume limited in Europe, so set it to another region from the start but was not sure of what difference there was.

The X7 with Sense is very good. I'm absolutely delighted. I got almost all my money back on selling the J3 so purchased some Q-Jays to go with the X7 and it sounds stunning. Using a Nintendo DS case is the perfect way for me to carry about the player too during travel.

I must look into getting a case. Tuff Luv do a leather one for about 20 quid (I have Tuff Luv case for my Sony ebook reader and they are excellent) but imagine a DS case is much cheaper...!

The leather case is nice but doesn't enclose the player totally and adds bulk for putting in the pocket. A DS case is a couple of quid and fits in the earphones too. I might end up getting the lather case but for now the DS one is perfect.

I have tried this on my X7, and it has had no effect. I selected English for language, Non-EU for region and China/Europe for radio frequency. Any suggestions?

Strange - it works for me? Note that the limit is still set at "40" - its just a hell of a lot louder than it was. Or at least, it certainly should be...?

Kizune

You won't be able to visually see if the limit is enabled or not, the volume can be set to 40 in both cases. It's like Flip Martian said, only the loudnesss is different.

Well, listening to the same particular album after making the change, it didn't seem particularly louder. However, I just realised used different headphones, and I can report that my failure to discern a difference is due to the second set of headphones having their independent slider volume control.[blush]

To be honest, I won't often need to turn the volume up very often.

See as a matter of principle, like nobbling a dvd player to play region 1 even though you're hardly ever going to use it :D

Craig - exactly. And some of my reasons for going with Cowon rather than another iPod was to escape the dead hand of Apple's control on what I can and cannot do. Particularly the major limitation of iTunes. So the volume limit is one of the annoying limitations I'd prefer to do without!

I've always used JRiver Media Center for all my music management and it is able to sync some older IPods, but Apple actively make it difficult for them and so that influenced my decision to go with the X7.

I did think I'd made the wrong decision until Kizunes UCI's came along though.

Got the X7 purely for (classical) music and increased capacity. 30GB in a Zen Vision M was not enough. But the X7 is not loud enough linked into my quiet car so I must remove the EU limit.

I'm very rusty on this (my last computer job was in 1972!). Cannot see SYSTEM folder in Flash Drive using a Windows 7 PC. Tried searching for param.cfg in both drives with no success. I'm sure this is very basic but how do I find the file to delete it?

I've tried "Load Factory Defaults" but it doesn't get me back to allow changing the Region.

Any help appreciated.

Still cannot see the SYSTEM folder but I updated the firmware from 2.07 to 2.09 and this allowed me to set Region as Non- European. Now the volume is fine. [smile]
