I've heard the odd rumor of an Android-based Cowon PMP or tablet, but has anyone heard anything about a phone?

To me, the combination of Cowon audio quality with Android flexibility sounds like a killer device. But only if it could also act as a phone. No phone, no deal - I've had an HTC Desire for a few months now and I don't want to go back to carrying an entire warehouse of devices with me at all times.

I mean... phone, camera, almost certainly a game system, media player, GPS, PDA, flashlight, wifi analyzer, all needing to go in a separate pocket or they'll scratch or damage each other. Then somewhere else I've got to put a notepad, whatever various paperwork and manuals I need for a job, probably a scientific calculator, maybe even an ebook reader if I know I'm going to be waiting a while. Oh, and my keys, wallet, and laptop need to go somewhere too. All but those last three now fit comfortably in a single pants pocket! If I trip and fall somewhere, I haven't lost a bajillion dollars of hardware! I can get ready to leave the house without taking an inventory! [rofl]

I wouldn't be too surprised if Cowon announced their first phone within the next year or even sooner... After all it should be far from an impossible task to add a baseband chip to D3 which already is running Android.

I have been looking for a smartphone with quality audio output to simplify my portable gear, but so far the only decent one I have seen is from Apple and I'm not going to give money to that company. Its a shame, really. I have to admit that after testing a couple of phones in a store I'm far more interested in WP7 than Android -- the visual glory of HD7 made all the other OS'es feel outdated. But still, a phone with BBE effects and Cowon's audio hardware would be a really cool combination, probably cool enough to warrant a purchase.

Do I trust Cowon to make a phone with, say, the overall quality of a Droid?

No. No I do not.

But I wouldn't mind being pleasantly surprised.

Well Cowon has to venture into the cellphone market. One day mp3 players will become outdated as more and more people are moving towards one convergent device instead of carrying 2-3 devices. In order to survive the competition.,cellphone is a good option.
