I, along with others complained about X7 resolution. After converting some of my movies, I wanted to report that it has been a pleasure watching movies on a screen of this size and the quality isn't bad. Its not hi def like we are used to but not bad.
I converted to WMV 480x272. Plays the movies flawless. Love the controls on video.
This is my first Cowon, after zune, ipod classic, ipod touch, 2 creative labs. I am having more fun with this one. Because, it holds my entire library and finally can watch movies in bed before going to sleep. Always did before but this one has the most pleasurable screen size.
Sure, could be some improvements but device is better than expected.
I am happy with X7 after 4 days.
New Cowon Fan[yes]
Peace
That is great to hear! How crisp is the display anyway?
I had my doubts of the low resolution myself but I'm going to give it a try anyway! I want to be able to carry around my small little music collection as well.

hi i just ordered mine abt 2 hrs ago and i told the dealer tht the decision whether to buy the x7 or not wud rest on the players video playback
so i took a couple of my video files and tested on the x7
n the picture was really good despite the low screen resolution
from wat i understand the reso of 480 x 272 is the resolution of the screen and not the maximum resolution of the video file the player will support. i think the resolution of the screen will determine the richness or sharpness of the picture
and there was no need to zoom in the video was jst fantastic
heres the following files i tested and their resolution:
(all the below are avi files encoded with divx 7)
whose line is it anyway(american tv show)- 512 x 384
wall street (movie) - 720 x 324
A team (movie) - 640 x 270
Street Dance (movie)- 640 x 352
Modern Family (american tv show) - 624 x 352
Simpsons - 512 x 384
all the above files worked and wall street was a BDrip with audio codec of AC3 so tht was really high quality
but once one file didnt work
which was Diabolique 704 x 384 though its reso was less than wall street it still did not work
i havent figured it out why it happnd but i guess has somethin with the codec.
but anyway my opinion irrespective of the video resolution of 480 x 272 it played files with higher resolution flawlessly except Diabolique and the quality was really good
will put up screenshots later when i get ma player tomm
hope this helps clarify ur doubts

Its hard to say how crisp..its better than expected. My Ipod classic was a little more crisp but I couldn't see the video that well. My Ipod touch is crisper because it is hi def.
I would compare it with a zune i had in crispness. My zune had a good video for what it was.
All in all, it has been a pleasure to watch videos on it. I struggled with a 64g ipod hi def but in the end, I felt like I was going backwards, I had to give up a lot of my library from ipod classic to the touch.
Screen size, capacity was the two factors for me.
Clarity and smoothness of my video has bee great, it is crisp enough to see details and closeup of faces reveal some wrinkles and such. Its my first portable that I am satisfied laying in bed or sitting in back yard watching videos.
I will try to take screen shots as well this weekend.

Can you tell me what program(s) you are using to convert videos so they work on the X7? I have commercial DVDs (VOB files) and MP4 files downloaded from online TV sites that I'd like to be able to watch on my X7. I've tried to convert these using Super but on the X7 the video and sound are not in sync. Suggestions gratefully received! Should I buy Jetaudio?

My device bricked after a week or so, so don't shower it with too much praise just yet! But here's to hoping you won't encounter the same problem ;)
What annoyed me to no end when trying to find reviews of the device before buying was everyone complaining about the screen resolution. It's a portable MUSIC player first, everything else third, what did you expect? Unless the screen resolution somehow magically affects the quality of your music files I don't see how anyone could complain.
Plus like you said the videos actually look pretty good. Well, the only video I've watched was a live performance of The Good Die Young by Scorpions, but even it looked good (ripped off of youtube).

Well, if yours bricked, I have read one or two who had issues, mine will probably do the same. I am watching and debating should I return this device. Right now I like it a lot. HHmmmmmmmm......I am on the fence worried about mine bricking.......will think about it over the next few days. It is just there is nothing else I want. I need this space and screen size..........
Sorry yours bricked.......that sucks......Hope you get something else to better replace it.
Peace

Oh I don't mind. Well I'd be lying if I said I wasn't disappointed but I still have my 80gb iPod to fall back on.
I, too, really liked the device (loved it, in fact) and I will probably just get a new x7. I mean it's still fresh off the oven, I'd give Cowon a bit of time to iron all the bugs out, and once the TCCTool starts supporting x7 flawlessly even the bricking won't be that big a deal.
Again, here's hoping yours won't go jammy-jam!
[Edit:] Wow I feel like a complete fool/tool. I complained about the 'bricking' on another related forum and was told to re-update the firmware, and guess what, it worked. For the love of god, how stupid am I for not trying something like that before .___.

Ok...decided to keep mine. I like it too much and think if it happened to brick, I can do something. So, if it bricked, how did you update the firmware?
I haven't synced mine in a week, everything is rocking along ok except for no files in my playlist. I emailed cowon about this and the album art being too big. I will hold out for firmware updates.
And yay for you on the firmware updates working!!!!!

You mean the way it zooms art in and crops it for the portrait display? That was bothering me at first, I think it should be an option in the settings, or maybe a press in the middle of the screen should change how it's displayed during playback.

Hi, I have several devices Cowon, and now I'm enjoying this wonder called X7. I transferred to the device, a video that had loaded on a Cowon Q5W. This video had a resolution of 800 x 480, because that was the Q5W's screen resolution. I wanted to try it on the Cowon X7, to see what happened. And what happened is exactly what I expected: The Cowon X7 play this video, beautifully and without any lag. For those who doubt about the low resolution of the screen, I assure you that in comparison with the Q5W (800 x 480), the differences are hardly noticeable. Perceptible only to those who have to be compared.
If that is the doubt that prevents you decide to purchase an X7, I want to kill the ghost: The X7 plays the videos in an excellent manner, and the screen is absolutely beautiful!
I use DVD FAB program to convert videos. For me it's what has me most simplify things. Basically because I can put a DVD onto the PC and the software converts everything to an AVI file (if desired), and even insert subtitles in the same file. It can handle resolutions to individual taste. Definitely I think the best option. Obviously, not only handles files. VOB, also handles any existing video file. And best of all: looking on the internet gets!

Overall, love the X7 but they need to fix the playlist problem and artwork.

Yeah the video is actually very good, I have changed my converting to AVI with xVid codec and convert at a video bitrate of 12000 and 30 fps. I have seen no pixelation.
Only problem i have with the X7 is playlist, no files show up on device in playlist. I have used 4 media centers to sync it, no success.
Also don't like the zoom of album art.

Well.. If it does 'brick' like it did for me (it gives you the 'Failed to something resource, error' -error message when you turn it on, just update the player's firmware to the 2.0.6 version again and it'll start working again.

Here's where I complained about it and where I found the answer. Might be helpful to some.
