View Full Version : Every now and then my D2+ doesn't startup. What is wrong ?
Today, after not haven't used my Rockboxed D2+ for some time, I installed the latest version of Rockbox on the SD card. To my surprise however, every now and then my player doesn't boot properly. I see the Rockbox screen for a few seconds and then my screen turns bright and is frozen. I can only use the reset button then and start again. One time it does boot then, but another time I get the same problem. It is very randomly. I didn't have this problem before. Until the last time I used the player ( a few months ago) everything was o.k.
What could be wrong or what could I be doing wrong ?
FWIW, I have FW 3.13 installed.
Thanks in advance.

the D2 built had faced lots of changes, had you erased the old folder or you had over wright it?!
Thanks Peacuful for your reply.
Yes I had removed the old Rockbox folder and installed a complete new one (the latest D2 build).
Funny thing is that it is very randomly. Sometimes Rockbox boots properly. Next time however I first see the Rockbox screen, but after a few seconds the screen becomes very bright and everything is frozen. I only can use the reset button then.
I already tried another SD card, to see if it was the SD card, but same problem.
Btw, WHEN Rockbox does boot correctly, I see a short "flash" between the first Rockbox screen (immediately after starting up) and the normal Rockbox menu screen. Is that normal ? ( I cannot rember how it was in the past).

I never have saw such thing,
I don't know why I never had any major problem with rockbox, maybe I'm the lucky one.
do you have back up from the old built you used ?!
I think I must have an old build somwhere. Have to search for it.
Btw, I noticed that the Power switch turns on Rockbox and that Power>Hold starts the Cowon firmware. This is different from what the manual says and also different from what it used to be, as far as I can remember. I thought that Power>Hold was used for Rockbox. Has this been changed recently ?

I see a similar problem with current Rockbox build on my D2 DAB with D2+ DAB FW 4.13. If you have a closer look at the Rockbox posts you will find every now and then people complaining of instability.
We have to keep in mind that the D2 builds of Rockbox are still in a beta phase and probably will never be released for D2, so in case of instability one has to fall back to a former (more stable) version.
The decision whether to boot Rockbox or original FW (OF) first is not taken by Rockbox but by the Rockbox bootloader merged into the OF (see further down). The standard Rockbox bootloader starts Rockbox first (by Power switch) and OF by the Hold switch.
So if you didn't change your patched OF 3.13 you wouldn't see a different behaviour of your boot sequence.
For building your own bootloader patched OF:
Excerpt from http://download.rockbox.org/daily/manual/rockbox-cowond2/rockbox-buildch2.html:
"...Installing the bootloader
1. Get a copy of the original Cowon D2 firmware from http://www.cowonglobal.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=C08&bmenu=support (http://www.cowonglobal.com/zeroboard/zboard.php?id=C08&bmenu=support). It has to be of the same version that is currently installed on your player.
2. Build the mktccboot tool or download a binary for your operating system.
3. Build the bootloader (bootloader-cowond2.bin). Pre-built binary is available at http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/cowon/d2/bootloader-cowond2.bin (http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/cowon/d2/bootloader-cowond2.bin).
4. Patch the bootloader into the Cowon firmware using mktccboot:
mktccboot D2N.bin bootloader-cowond2.bin D2N-patched.bin
Note: The filename depends on the firmware version and hardware revision as shown in the table below (for the D2 use the file found in folder “1”, not “0”)
FW/HW D2 D2+
1.xx, 3.xx D2.bin D2_P.bin
2.xx, 4.xx D2N.bin D2N_P.bin
5. Copy the output file (“D2N-patched.bin” in our example) to the root of the player’s internal memory and rename it according to the above table..."
I downloaded mktccboot.exe from here (http://www.mediafire.com/?lzw0gdzxtem) (see shotofadds contribution at http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=32193&highlight=mktccboot) and managed to build my own dual boot bootloader using the http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/cowon/d2/bootloader-cowond2.bin (http://download.rockbox.org/bootloader/cowon/d2/bootloader-cowond2.bin) (loading OF first).[thumbsup]
.
After a lot of messing, I came to the conclusion that it indeed must be the Rockbox build. I tried different firmware versions (3.11 and 31.13) and different bootloaders (of course the right version for the firmware) in combination with a few of the latest Rockbox builds and every time I had the problem once of a few times.
Then I tried the same (different fw and different bootloaders) with a backup of an old Rockbox D2 build (r.24332 of 100124) and until now it boots properly to Rockbox (fingers crossed).
Btw, are there no older (but newer than 24332) D2 builds available ? On the Rockbox site I only see a few daily builds from the last few days. Or am I not looking on the right place ?
