View Full Version : Cowon J3 Display Glass Problem

Please forgive me, if I post a the wrong place and feel free to move my post to the appropriate place.
Just bought a J3 32GB Black and had it exchanged once already, because of a problem with the display glass. Now I have an exchange unit and it is showing the same problem.
Seems that the display glass on the lower right corner has not been glued to the base properly as it is sticking out. I also moves down, if I exert a gently pressure upon the corner of the glass. But then it would come back up after a while...
It looks like this:

Does anyone of you people have the same problem?
Or am I the only one in the whole world?
Is it a known issue with the J3??
Or maybe these two units are from a bad batch of something.
Your feedback would be much appreciated!

I just got my J3 yesterday and it has the same problem in the lower right corner. I read someplace the glass is just held in place with some double sided tape and a few others are having the same problem. My guess is there may be something under this corner applying a small amount of upward presser and it will tend to be a common problem with the J3s.
I like my J3 but was expecting a little better build quality for $300. [thumbdwn]
Ditto, mine seems to be a little raised in the bottom right corner. Pressing it down it sticks for awhile, then starts to come up again. I forget, I have another device around with a similar sort of issue. Really wish I didn't see this post as I didn't notice it until now and it's going to bug me.

I know what you mean, but a problem like this must be dealt with head on. The more owners who complain to Cowon that their units have this problem, the more incentive Cowon will have to fix--or perhaps even recall--these units.
My unit--a 16GB version--does not have glass sticking up but I've pressed down on the glass to see how it feels and it doesn't feel like it's held in place very securely. In fact, it feels rather loose to me.
For the price, I also agree the quality is really lacking. I expected more than this cheap plastic case. [no]

Same here though not as dramatic. I noticed it when some lint got caught in the crevice between the brushed metal and the screen border.

Speaking of crevices, I hate the crevices on the J3. I accidentally got some lukewarm, semi-melted chocolate onto the screen once and then I tried to wipe it off. Well guess what? A little bit of the chocolate got stuck in the crevice and now for the life of me I can't get the stupid chocolate out. It's really easy to get gunk into the crevice but extremely difficult to get it out. [mad]

You are absolutely right. The question is, how can we complain to Cowon in an organized way? And would they really care? Reading about the two-sided tape (if this is true) didn't really increase my confidence in the product.
Right now I am in the process of trying to return or get another replacement for my second J3 32GB. From what I read, I'll rather not go for the replacement. Problem is that I am located in Switzerland and the policy here is that you cannot return a product, even if you bought it over the Internet, which I did. You can only return a product, if it's "not fit for the purpose" and they are not able to replace or repair it.
I paid CHF 440 for my J3 and really expected better build quality and QC.
Whenever I pick up the J3 I feel the edge of the glass and it really bugs me. It's also not going to get better over time, I suppose.
Thanks to everybody for your posts

Well, I decided to look at my J3. There is the slightest (hair's breadth) difference between the glass and the brushed chrome metal on the lower righthand side but the glass is even with the edge of the J3. It feels like the brushed chrome metal is slightly lower on all sides. I don't intend to drop it in a vat of chocolate.

Everyone who got a J3 with elevated screen should contact cowon to complain, they really should sort out their manufacturing process!

Just saw a post in another thread named Gorilla Glass Let Go, where a very brave guy disassembled his J3, removed the glass cover and glued it to the base with Loctite. Photos included.
Probably would nt have noticed this if I hadn't read the threads, mine has the same problem, It doesn't really bother me but do not want it to get worse. So, sent it back. I am Assuming the new one will be the same. contacting Cowon today to complain and make sure they are at least covering us if it does get worse.
I have the same problem with the glass slightly raised and feeling loose when I press on it. Only difference is that the problem is on the top right hand side corner of the screen.

Man, why did you have to make this thread...now I noticed it on my J3 and it bugs me out! [mad]
Now I have to return it and hope, the replacement is better!
Edit:
Replacement J3 just arrived - same glass trouble.
Any recent case of this defect?

u should get it rma, so they actually fix it vs just exchanging it...
jrinch67, +1
I have returned my J3 to the shop and took another one without this problem. Now I'm very happy =)

I bought mine in March, no problems so far.

Interesting. The S9 had the exact same problem. Mine is slightly raised in the lower left corner.
I hope mine will be free of any defect... Usually, I got all these little problems.
My DBA-02 had a rather bad treble lack in the right channel... I just sent them back today for a replacement :-(
I have the glass issue too on my J3, it occurs on the top right corner of the glass in my case. It isn't too annoying so I didn't return it.
My S9 didn't have this problem as far as I remember.

My glass has a slight bump in the right lower corner...but you can hardly notice it.
Actually I only noticed it because of this topic...it doesn't bother me really.
Same here... and it doesn't bother me either.^^
Just to feed info, for the other potential buyers, mine is perfect, impossible to detect vizually or with fingers the slightest level problem... So it seems I don't have all the problems together :-).

I received my black 32GB Cowon J3 yesterday. I have checked the glass towards the lower right corner several times, as far as I can tell it's fine. Here is what my Cowon looks like: http://iaudiophile.net/forums/picture.php?albumid=112&pictureid=648

guys: if you send it in for an rma, they will fix that problem permentely. a new replacment is bound to have the same problem eventually, but sending it into cowon will fix it completely. i had a loose battery problem, and sending it in was the answer. some people had dissembled it used glue or other things to get it back fix it, but those fixes may not last forever. I think cowon changed the internal design of mine, as the battery doesnt move, the screen does lift, and it all feels very solid and sturdy

Had to slip it out of the silicone case to check mine. Either i got lucky or they fixed the issue in manufacturing (I got mine 2 days ago) either way mine doesn't have the problem. And for what it's worth i have the 16 gig model.
Mine was purchased a few weeks ago and it doesnt have the problem as far as I can see.
I checked the corners, looked straight from the sides, nothing.

The J3 I had before car was stolen had this problem. It never affected anything tho. The one I just got to replace it doesn't have the problem at all. So they have corrected it.
