View Full Version : White screen on boot

I'm running rockbox from an SD card, with Cowon fw 3.13, on a D2+. I have successfully booted and used rockbox once (on the first try with this card), but on subsequent boots I get the rockbox splash and then a blank white screen. No error messages. No buttons or touch areas do anything to the screen. I can only press the reset button.

I haven't been able to find any info on this problem. Does anyone know of a solution, or has anyone had this problem also?

Thanks

Which version/revision of rockbox are you trying to use?
What happens if you load rockbox onto the internal memory and remove the card, then try to boot it?
What happens if you simply remove the card with no .rockbox folder anywhere, and try to boot it?

my rb refuses to start sometimes, too.

my simptoms are a bit different however:
rb will show me a black screen telling me that rbīs installation is incomplete.

when i start the original firmwar than (what will always cause database rebuild in this cases) the problem always goes away.

for me, its quite a rare behaviour. it does not bother me that much.

I am using the most recent version from yesterday, that is, r27325-100706.
If rockbox is loaded onto internal memory, with the SD card absent, it sometimes boots properly, and sometimes does the white screen. One time, under these circumstances it faded to white slower than usual, and I could see that it was still displaying the boot splash during the white screen.
If the rockbox folder isn't anywhere, then I get this:

Rockbox boot loader
version r23363-091026
ATA
mount
File not foundOccasionally, after turning off rockbox, the power button doesn't do anything and I have to reset.

Since my original post, I have noticed that the white screen problem happens most of the time, but not all of the time. I still don't know what causes it, but if I reset and try booting again enough times, it eventually works. It usually takes 3-7 tries. I can still boot the cowon firmware just fine.

Before I tried rockbox, I was using 3.11, and I just upgraded to 3.13 at the same time as installing the patched firmware. I didn't upgrade to 3.13 and then "upgrade" to 3.13 with the rockbox bootloader. I don't know if that matters or not. It probably shouldn't though.

Thanks for the reply

That is weird, I haven't seen that behaviour on bootup before.

"Fading to white" is what you see if the LCD screen is powered off while the backlight LEDs are still turned on. The only thing that would cause that is a bug/crash in the Rockbox LCD driver - and that hasn't been changed for years.

I'll have a think what might be causing it....

I have the same problem with the last build (27346 at the moment).
With the build I previously used, I never get this problem. This was build 27254

I don't know if this was a cause or a consequence of those white screens followed by hard reboots, but my sdcard fat was corrupted.

After reformatting it to have a clean sdcard fat32 and reinstalling a fresh RB build, no more white screens for now

I think I'll try reformatting or using a different card, and then I'll try an older build. I will let you know how it goes.

I don't think it's the card - I reckon there might be a timing problem with the latest builds. I'll take a look over the weekend.

Whenever it boots successfully, I notice that it flashes a white screen for a split second before going back to the splash screen and then to the main menu. Maybe that will help you.

There was a problem in the LCD driver that I think I have fixed in r27395. Please try that version and let me know...

(it seems to have been an intermittent problem, that is why certain previous revisions seemed to work ok)

I always have the white flash at boot time, but it works and boot fine (but for me, a fresh reinstall has worked even with the "buggy" firmware versions so...)
Tested with 27398, both bootloader and firmware updated

I get the white flash sometimes too, I'm not sure what causes it but it seems harmless so far...

In r27390 i have white splash for a part of second, when booting. But this is not a problem for me, cos Rockbox is working ok. I dont know is this a bug?

Maybe that white splash is caused by Hold button, that is turning on for a few second when booting? Because this button usually turn off the screen when Cowon is working.
Maybe its stupid idea :)

I will try the new revision. Thank you.

I'm not sure whether the flash I see on the splash screen is the same thing as the white screen. It might just be the main menu or something.

I'm having no problems now. It also boots much faster than before for me. Thanks again for fixing this.

I still see the white flash, but it's not causing any problems. I seem to remember seeing that on the Sandisk e260, too.
