try either the Shure E series or Sony MDR-*1LP's. (the sony line has MDR-51, 71 and 81, and the Shure series has E2c, e3c, e4c, e5c). The shures are more expesive.

i would not recommend the sonys.

i have owned sony products in the past, and while not these current set of earbuds they have out now, according to all the info i have read on them, they follow the traditional bass heavy and crappy sound quality that sony is known for.

i was a dj spinning bass heavy breakbeats and the expensive sony headphones were too bassy and too muddy.

sony is crap imo, and a lot of the guys who are into quality sound reproduction way more than me will agree.

i heard good thigns about the shures, but since i didnt want to drop more than 40 bucks or so on canalphones i went with the jvc hp-fx55 and they kick ass for 45 bucks from audiocubes.com

u cant go wrong with the shures either it seems, depends on your price range really.

I have some cheapo behind-the-neck style that I got from Target. I really like em because:
They sound great.
Only one cord instead of two.
Easier to get on.
Comfy (but sizes differ wildly -- most were way too big for me -- gotta try a few to find the best fit.)
Don't look as stupid as over-the-head style. (Eeek! my hair!)
I have to take them off frequently at work and it's easier to pop off one thing than mess with 2.
Easy to drape em around my neck if I have to take them off for just a few minutes.
Unobtrusive if you have long hair.

thats what i thought. u know when u tell somebody how u got 100 dollar earbuds for 30 bucks, it might be considerate to tell them how, especially when they are askin for advice about getting such a product. :D

ive heard good things about those, though i heard they are a bit lacking in the bass department. i need bass, but not the muddy sony bass.

I had the sony fontopia headphones. I didn't mind them, they were alright and sufficed. They broke however, so now I'm using the stock earphones.

Out of sheer curiousity, I order the Logitech Wireless Headphones and am really interested in seeing how it is in person. Should be coming in a few days. I'd really love to listen to my music w/out wires, should be interesting. ;)

I just received my shure e4´s (bought them for 200$ including postage an packing to europe) and they are absolutly awesome!!!!

Try it and you hear the music in a new dimension...

The downside is that you NEED the mp3´s to be in 192kps or more.

The 128kps mp3´s sound so dull... ;-)

Hope I helped you!

oh wow 11 replies in one day heh. thanks alot guys. i am currently the not-so-proud owner of a PX200. over here, noone wears headphones with that headband thing anymore. x_X so i'm looking for something that goes right into your ear. i heard those work better than the PX200. i mean, for one, they're closer to your ears and stuff. does anyone know which is better? the sennheiser PX range or in-ear earphones. im not willing to spend more than say 70SGD on in-ear earphones. yeh. so thats about USD40? smth like that. thanks for the help

It may just be too many hours around turbine engines in my younger days, but I think the stock X5L earbuds are just fine, and I think I get better sound out of them than any other in-ear bud that I've ever used.

Plus, I don't fancy spending $100 on a set of headphones. :)

haha. cool, but i HATE stock earphones. theyre ugly and they suck ahahah. what i DO want to enjoy with my X5 is that promised great sound quality. so i'll definetly need good earbuds to do that.

around that price range the jvc victor in ear phones, or even cheaper the panasonic rj-e50 or something like that are good in ear canalphones.

Interesting.. seems not many pepple at SG know much about iaudio.. where you get it from and any recommendation where they have decent prices (or if possible specifically which store/shop?) But why did you say many ain't using those headband thingy? I do see people putting up those headphones... but usually the non-working crowd, I guess, - but some of my colleagues still use headphones.

best sounding earphones you'll find for <100USD are The Grado SR60. They are open air headphones... if you are looking for in ear headphones you'll be hard pressed to find something significantly better than the stock headphones for under 80USD. The problem with less expensive in ear phones is that they don't seal well and have weak bass. I'd recomend keeping the stock headphones for in-ears, and getting a nice sounding pair of open air phones for other listening.

Konechiwa
08-17-2005, 12:25
no way. You could get the Sony MDR-71LP's, which have great bass, but aren't top notch. You could also get the Shure E2C's, which are great, and have plenty of base. The Grado's well, duh of course, but if you want to look like a dork walking around with them, then go ahead.

dude the sonys kinda suck. they have lots of bass, but they are muddy and shitty quality. sony phones kinda blow if u want any quality reproduction of sound.

Mine should be coming in tomorrow. But it only has volume control, it is not able to play/pause the music. I'm not expecting too much out of it. Hope it'll last and all, although I wouldn't mind too much about modifying it to work with other headphones....:D I'll note how it is later on after trying it out for awhile.

my bad on the play/pause

but sweet man
i wish i had the money to get one

yeah definitely update on what u think about those phones

the wireless headphones for ipod are better because they can like play/pause and go back and forward tracks...i wish they did the same for mp3 players

I have testeed several. I am NOT an audiophile.

1. stock earpieces. Very uncomfortable for prolonged periods, adequate but not good.

2. Sennheiser 280 Pro. Great sound isolation and great sound. Missing empty space between the notes. I can't describe but it is quite good and adequately driven.

3. Sennheiser PX100. My choice for over-the-ear open phones in the reasonable price range, very portable, comfortable, GREAT sound.

4. Shure E3C. Ahhh, how wonderful. These are the best. A bit pricey. I don't know how things would sound with the E4C or the E5 but I was on a budget. Fantastically comfortable, these sound tremendous to me and are the best sounding headphones I have.

In sum, I would go with the PX100 for external cans, and the E3C for when you want to listen for periods of time isolated from the rest of the world.

After having an iPod since the 1st generation and then buying a 3rd gen iPod, I must say that I enjoy my X5L much more than my iPods.

The only gripes I have with my X5L is that the "Random" feature isn't really random.....I catch it playing the same songs before other songs are played. Also the Dynamic Playlist isn't really all that Dynamic.... the iPod On-The-Go playlist allows you to save playlists w/out the computer. The navigation for the X5 is decent, but I hate it when you are navigating through some folders, but if you don't use the player for awhile (While driving for example), it resets back to where the song is originally. That's about all I can think of for now. Still though, I think I'd choose my X5L over my iPods anyday. Oops, went off track, just my rant for the day I suppose.

On topic, my Wireless Logitech Headphones are coming in today! Should be here in a few hours hopefully. Can't wait to try them at work and see how they compare, I can't stand the wires anymore. :D

Agree. My EX51s went belly up after 2 weeks. Great bass (I've lots of funk/disco), but crappy build quality, cord's too long and the left channel died today.

Temporarily using my old iRiver H10 buds (Sennheisser MX400). Do the job very well until I can try (and afford) these e4s you guys rave about...

the westone UM1's are comparable to the shure e3c's if not better, for less money.

after a ton of research, mine are on their way.

i wanted something with a nice soundstage, warm sound but detailed and good bass and clarity. they seemed the best bang for the 100 buck. from the ton of info i read these seemed the best.

if you want more analytical sound, a bit more detailed but colder - etymotics seem to be a popular choice.

I recommend the superfi 5 EB , They cost $200 , but Ive thrown away a lot more money on less expensive buds trying to find the sound I like.
Big bass if you want (can always turn down eq) clean mids and highs , 2 yr warantee , user replaceable cord. Havent heard better earbuds , I would buy them again in a flash.

anyone recommend philips earphones ???

I used to have a pair of Philips in-ear headphones that were like the Sony MDR's but cheaper and had a better sound - better midrange - but they crapped out on me after about 6 months of abuse. lol. I've used a $50 pair of Philips stereo headphones for about 2.5 years now, that still have an great sound with equalizers up too.

When i got my second X5 i switched to the Sennheiser CX300's. They're AMAZING! $70 or $80(US) with a great bass response and very comfortable. WIth them, i wouldn't recommend turning the m3b up all the way because it'll get a little overpowering. But my favourite pair of headphones since!

I've got Vibes. I like 'em except they don't stay in my ears very well. I also have Westone UM1's. They stay in.

I like 'em both for different occasions.

Hi you all, first post.

I personally prefer plugs so I went with Sennheiser CX300 (http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/products_headphones_classicline_mxseriescxseries_5 00830).
For classical ones I´d recommend you Sennheiser PCX300 (http://www.sennheiser.com/sennheiser/icm_eng.nsf/root/500370)
Not high class, but pretty good anyway.

Outdoors I use Sennheiser's MX450, they're pretty good so far...
At home I got a pair of Sony's MDR-CD180. They're not so bad, but I was thinkung of getting a pair of something more serious :)

I haven't read through all posts so I'm not sure if they were mentioned yet but I highly recommend AKG K81DJ, available on line for less than $80 at places like abesofmaine.com and others. The sound is very well balanced, and they do a great job of cancelling out noise. Here is a review from heaphones.com.

Yes, i totally agree, i have the super-fi 5 pro black, and they sound great with powerful basses (when you put them correctly), and clear highs. But they are now in the custome service for repair. I expect they come back soon because the Cresyn headphones do not justice to the X5.

Is this the one with the inline volume control, or is that another pair?

rangel28

No, that's another pair. These do not have in-line volume control. They do have an extra long cord, however, which may turn off some people. I guess, by their name, that they were designed for DJs.

Find an audiophile website, check out their recomendations and you'll find planty of talk about the Koss PortaPro's.
Legendary and although some online iSheep resellers are flogging them for over £60, you can pick them up for £15 if you search amazon.
Unchanged design since 1981 (for a reason), so they look a little retro but they come with a good length cable, gold adaptor and leather case.
Oh, and a LIFETIME GUARANTEE!
If they break, just send them back to Koss and they'll replace them - no questions.
The Grado's are excellent, but for quality and price NOTHING comes close to the PortaPro.
(You can probably pick them up fairly cheap in the USA).

i would consider myself an amateur audiophile.

one of my biggest attractions to the X5 is that it is black. the player has SO little background noise it's ridiculous. and the channel separation is insane.
Take every advantage of the low background noise and go for a REAL "in ear monitor" using armatures.

The one i have is the westone UM2, they are about 300 new. 200 used on head-fi.com

it is pure bliss everytime i fire up my X5. PURE BLISS.

even ipod+lineout dock+RSA tomahawk amplifier doesn't compare.
