Donald Bell is an idiot and only thinks about Apple's ipod lineup.

He did the same thing for the s9 (he broke it and then basically said it was a piece of shit.)

Oy gevalt...

Sorry, but to a newcomer to this forum this thread is totally reading as pots calling kettles...

Can anyone actually call out information he brought up in his review that's inaccurate, or is this more about trashing the reviewer than the review?

he is an ass....he call himself a professional reviewer:P hahaha. He doesn't like the V5, cause it only play torrent dvix file..But he love the O2 cause it still can play all the torrent dvix movies that he downloaded for his collection, lol. What a reviewer[shocked]

What did you think of the review? I only read a little bit of it, it starts off so poorly written and looses further credibility to the point where I just gave up.

I never thought the V5 was going to be in any way a suitable device for us westerners, but the cnet's review goes just that little bit OTT. Rather than a review it reads more like the rantings of an ill-informed forum poster.

Haven't looked at it, and, notably, this thread doesn't have a link anywhere. I'll admit my curiosity's been piqued.

I have a v5 white 16g. The only thing i dislike is the silly UI. Sound is Great as usual. Video is awesome as usual. I hope they can create another UI like on the s9 which i own. The V5 is everything the a3 and o2 should have been. BTW shouldn't there be a V5 section in the flash based player esction of the forum by now? The V5 been out for a few months now. Again I hate the UI. Since I Think its flash based. We should be able to change the UI.

Donal Bell's V5 Review From Cnet (http://news.cnet.com/8301-17938_105-20001124-1.html?tag=mncol;title) There we go ;)

I'm actually really confused, was Donald Bell pretending to be stupid? His ending note in the iPad review was pretty impressive:

Final thoughts
Depending on who you talk to, the iPad is either the future of personal computing, the best distraction money can buy, or Apple's most doomed product since the Apple QuickTake digital camera. Even Apple's marketing team seems to be having a hard time nailing down exactly what the iPad is; in commercials, one minute it's a digital book, the next it's the photo album of the future.
There's nothing specific we can tell you that will justify paying $499 for the 16GB base model, much less $829 for a juiced-up 64GB version with 3G wireless. The only concrete reason to buy an Apple iPad is to be able to play around with the most celebrated gadget of the year. For CNET readers, we expect that is reason enough.

(shrug) That works for me. I admit I found the iPad very tempting, largely because I was in the market for a PMP (and not a music player), but I couldn't justify spending that much money on something I might not get a lot of benefit from.

Specially when there's stuff that's better and cheaper than the iPad (http://www.kokeytechnology.com/gadgets/laptops-notebooks/notion-ink-adam-tablet-pc-review-cheaper-but-better-than-apple-ipad/).

what even hurts when Bell says at the end:
"the Cowon V5 is just an all-around disappointment. If you really need a PVP with HDMI out and HD video support, go grab an Archos 5 or pick up a Zune HD and wait for XviD support later this year."
hahaha, means archos 5 is more capable, just bull shit!

JunglePimp

The inclusion of Archos 5 in that statement made sense, but Zune HD? It's not a PVP imho, with a 3.3 inch screen.

You know, I still love the Cowon O2, I gave the iAudio 7 and Editors' Choice, and I've stuck up for Cowon on many occasions. Unfortunately, the V5 (like the Cowon Q5W) is just a giant flop of a product.

Sound quality? How good would it need to sound for you to forgive the fact that the screen is sluggish, the processor is slow, the UI is a mess, there's no AAC support, no ID3 sort option, and you have to watch a love-stricken baby blue restroom icon race across the screen every time you play a song? If sound quality was remarkable, I would have mentioned it. It's a PVP, anyway. Video quality is what counts--and the V5 couldn't even do that right.

And yes, I tested the V5 with the same illegal DivX copy of Star Wars I used to test the Archos 5, the Cowon S9, Cowon O2, and every other DivX-compatible PVP that comes through the door. Anyone who tells you these things aren't made for people to watch video torrents is lying to you. When was the last time you came across legal downloads in the DivX, XviD, or MKV format?

It's my job to test these products. If the product advertises that it works well with video formats found only on insanely popular but technically illegal download sites, then that's a claim I need to test.

Also, as corporate as CNET might be, Engadget is owned by the equally corporate AOL/Time Warner. In the interest of fairness, I hope you're wagging your finger over there too.

Bottom line: the Cowon V5 is just an all-around disappointment. If you really need a PVP with HDMI out and HD video support, go grab an Archos 5 or pick up a Zune HD and wait for XviD support later this year. ?!
how many seconds did you used it think you have to give it another try.
it's really more than that

I guess the problem we have with the review isn't that he rated it bad, but because he didn't properly justify his ratings, which he's being made to do in the form of comments, by readers like peaceful1 :D

this one is my comment:

I have both the Archos 5 IMT with Andriod and the Cowon V5 HD.
I don't know what Audiodonald was reviewing but the Archos had issues with 720p files both in avi and mp4. I know cause I downloaded them the minute I had my archos. And they were a hit/miss on the Archos 5 so I don't know why he thinks the Archos is better. Even with new firmwares the Archos was a hit/miss. And for the files that play it didn't played them smooth, there was some stickyness/lags to the files. SD videos are fine on the archos but then they are fine on the Cowon V5 as well. I tried some MKV's with included subs and they played fine without any issues.

Secondly, you need a "dock" for the archos 5 to output HDMI which is 30-40 bucks. THe cable for the V5 is 15.00 online, I guess AudioDonald has more money to burn than I do on accessories.

"the processor is slow, the UI is a mess, there's no AAC support"

Again, the UI is bad it's not "slow". The touch response is fairly fast and accurate, more so than the Archos 5. he must have confused the UI with the apps that the UI opens. Sometimes it will take a extra sec for the app to load but it's the same thing on the Archos 5. Sometimes I'll hit play video and it'll take a sec or so to load up so I don't see what the issue is. Oh and I guess AudioDonald forgot about all the lockups and crashes on the Android 5 IMT. I had to reboot it every other day because the touch screen became unresponsive or the video just froze the system. As for AAC, the V5 does support it but only if it's in a video file. I have MP4 movies with AAC audio and the audio plays in the movies with no problem. it won't play it if it's just a aac music file.

I'm not sure how much of a disappointment the V5 is. It is experience, it doesn't have all the other stuff that the other pmp has but in my experience the V5 is way ahead of the Archos 5 IMT when it comes to playback of files.

He hated the UI and then tried to justify hating the entirety from this one (admittely horrible) factor. Opinion aside he contradicts himself multiple times, the best I think being in the comments where he tries to defend the review by saying it's a video player (er...I'd like to see some stats on usage for most owners here backing that up, audio is usually way ahead even if differences in video playback was a strong purchasing factor) and then comparing it to a unit that by his own words didn't even natively support DIVX yet...[rolleyes]

It's not a perfect player by any standards but it is the single best PMP I've ever used or seen, any real issues are cosmetic, the core qualities and functionality are best of class. I have no regrets after buying it.

ahriakin, why not create a review? i for one wanna hear your experience with it :D

i knew donald bell's review wasn't good the moment i read the first section, ui's aren't really that important as long as it does the job.

I've been trying to do a proper review since I got it, just haven't had time to do a decent one, but I have put some notes on my experiences here http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=33193&page=11 spread over a few posts.

Hi

I'm from India and am recently getting to understand The corporations culture of USA (Dont take this statyement the wrong way)

what interested me was donal's reply that engadget too is aOL owened ... an i have been following Engadget for some time and have often wondered abt their intentions depending on their various topics coverage n the editors article .....

my way of thinking n for most part the way of most people this side is that some of ur stuff is not affordable to us n u r being too selfish abt everything n so piracy will prevail over here .... and also u cry abt piracy bt ur celebrities n the media earns millions n millions of $ and live in top luxury n u want more .... (again dont take this statement too seriously as its not what i really wanted to talk abt but mentioned based upon my understanding about one of the topics in engadget and trying to say something about what i interpret)

well what i really wanted to ask was so simple ... which sites give better unbiased reviews or information .... currently i guess i already use the logical way out n check out as many reviews etc to derive some conclusion ....

he he he turned into a ramble i know bt would like to know ur comments :-)
