I get confused in this one. Is this more recent than the 2.50 release? Thanks.
yes, korean fw always begin with 1.x or 3.x (DMB). The International one is 2.x. So yes this is a newer one, but if you need drm, audibles and msc/mtp mode switch, than wait for the international update.
Are there major bugs with srt. subtiles, and sleep mode while keylock on in this version fixed? If not I won't bother to update.

I see. But does this have an English language pack as well? I don't speak Korean. :D And there are two versions here. What's the difference between the 1.51 and 3.51? Thanks!
3.51 is for DMB (TV, only available in Korea), and 1.51 for versions without DMB. International version (2.51) is normally released 1 or two days after the korean version.
yes all languages are available
only minor fixes and still no flash update :(

Maybe I'll wait for the international release then, just to be safe. :)

neither is "safer" than the other.
if you want to try it, don't worry, no harm.

What's the point in having 2 power buttons ?
only minor fixes and still no flash update :(
A year after release of our player, I think that all we're going to be seeing at this point is minor bug fixes here and there. I can't imagine them putting major work into over-hauling the way that it works. too bad they still can't make the picture viewer move fast. Love everything about my player except for pictures/album art browser (sloooooow).
I bet the S9's successor (if any) will have Flash 8..

I consider V5 to be a successor of S9 in a way, considering it's cowon's next polished PMP release after S9.
I consider V5 to be a successor of S9 in a way, considering it's cowon's next polished PMP release after S9.nah, the V5 is Q5s Successor [yes] and maybe this J3 i've been hearing much of is the S9s.

Nah--the V5 is way too tablet-y, like the Q5 or even the O2 in a way. they're focused a lot more on videos, whereas the S9's primary function is clearly music.

Yes of course guys.. I did keep in mind when I said that, I was talking more about a successor in terms of the standards the Cowon has set for itself, you could say ;)
Can anyone confirm whether the srt-subtitle freezing error and the auto shut down/sleep function with activated lock-screen button have been fixed with this update? I really don't want to update just to have than downgrade again and mess around with all the SOL etc. files.
Thanks for any help

I dont think so. Should be more like D5 or O2 new versions. The fact about S9 is not power but design.
BTW, what OS does S9 use? Cause v5 uses Windows CE (Mobile). it would be nice to have java applets too. So I could have a lot of games from SonyEricsson phones XD
The S9 has a self-made OS I think.

I refuse to use any firmwares that have that nasty blue transition screen.
1. Does this firmware have the nasty blue transition screen?
2. Have UCI programmers found ways to bypass the nasty blue transition screen?

Yes it does have the really epic blue screen i wish was in claws ui but isnt.
is this 1.51b/3.51b or just 1.51/3.51?
the title of the thread has the "b" in it so I was wondering maybe a patch would be released later on/

This answer if very vague...
Can someone clarify for me if Claw's UI gets rid of the blue background or not?
Mainmenu 2 has a Now playing feature. dont know if it was there already in 2.50??
i thnk they added some widgets, not sure because i didnt use that mainmenu before.
They did something, because the devide is a bit faster!!!

Yeah it does get rid of the blue screen, i worded it in such a way because i liked the blue screen and claws ui doesn't have it.
That blue background can be extracted and set as a wallpaper if anyone really likes it ...

Is it recommended to upgrade to this from 2.50? I don't want the blue screen either... it's English right?

The UCI of course will all be in English (or whichever language it was in before) but the system options and such.. I'm wanting to know about that too.
Every Korean firmware up until now could be set to English, I don't see why they would change that.
Myself, I'm waiting for the international version, though - switching between 1.xx and 2.xx firmwares sometimes deleted my EQ settings, which is a minor hassle. I'd rather wait a few days.
Is that f*&ing coffee cup still there?

Lol. It was indeed quite unneeded (the coffee cup).

its still there.
But the menus are faster.

my EQ settings got get deleted?
oh NO THEY DIDNT!!
crap.. yes they did.
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU
they should have made it a steaming turd instead.
Would be displayed extra sharp on the S9...quite a shitty idea.

Soooo...
IMPORTANT: Before you upgrade your S9 you might want to log your EQ settings somewhere... =)
Ok, I see, I had to try it out myself:
1) SRT-Subtiles Freezing: FIXED
2) No Shutdown if Hardware-LockScreen-Button on: FIXED
So now I am happy now for a while.
and it is amazingly fast. the widgets are responsive. the only point against it is that it is quite ugly after using Aero2 + DV for a while.

are the custom ucis faster too or just cowon's?
johnwharding
01-12-2010, 18:36
I am pretty sure that Cowon just optimized their UCI and not some underlying code that all of the UCIs use.
Like it has been said, the menu 3 on the s9 is sooo much faster.
before i would never think of using it, but now its really nice, i might just use it now, im going to test it on other uci's ans see if i can see a difference.
EDIT: After testing a few uci's it seems that the speed up that cowon did only provides faster browsing for there uci's...

Yea, after applying Claw's UI, any traces of that nasty blue transition screen were ERADICATED and my S9 looks great just like it used to on 2.41.
And I haven't noticed any major changes other than aesthetics, so there's really no reason NOT to upgrade.
Of course i'll get 2.51 when it comes out.
huh. I decided to try applying the firmware update.... it didn't update my 2.51 player. I thought that 1.XX was supposed to work on 2.XX players ...?
edit. strike that. that was weird. I powered on my player and it went almost straight to my previous mainmenu (mainmenu2) so I assumed it didn't update. And when I plugged it back into my computer I didn't see the update files any more. So I copied the files over one more time, but when I went to Safely Remove the device, it listed it as 1.51. But this time when I started it up again, it said that it was upgrading everything so I guess it worked. ...how strange.
1.51 Browser and Picture viewer both seem more responsive than previous iterations. I switched away from Cube Browser and Claw's photo viewer just to see if there were any improvements.
Anybody else think so, or placebo effect?
^ i think thats just you :P, i didn't notice any improvement besides the speed on menu 3, which i love.

I do think that cowon improved the speed and the touch sensitivity
I do think that cowon improved the speed and the touch sensitivity
that can be, maybe its just because I was using FW 1.41 until now, as the 1.50 had some bugs I can't live with. so compared to 1.41 is the 1.51 much faster and better. The only thing I miss is the old ui switch supporting 3 uis and one widget menu.

Sheesh. You guys act like this time it's any different to all earlier firmware releases. The 2.xx will be available soon enough, same as always. It's only been a week. And it's not like it's a life-universe-and-the-rest-changing update anyways. [rolleyes]

Well I have no information on how long it takes for the release of the international firmware, but I can certainly remain patient ;) My only hope is it is worth the patience.
But the other question is, what could they have improved? The sound? The UI?
I say let's wait for the prize ;)
Version 1.51 does not fix the bug that the .srt subs stay at the screen. Maybe they are fixing it for the 2.52 version, and release at the same time a 1.52 and 3.52 version.

That'd be illogical.
@JP, probably some small things, the bugs from the 1.xx and 3.xx versions ? =D Or maybe something huge ^^
I for one can't wait =D

3.xx is DMB.
GeGeGwAdA
01-19-2010, 16:59
1.xx is the Korean version and 2.xx is the international version.
The international version is always released some days after the Korean (1.xx) and DMB (3.xx). But as far as i remember it never takes that long between the release of the international version if it has the same changelog (and so version number) as the 1.xx an 3.xx. So i assume (and hope so) that Franki is right.
Version 1.51 does not fix the bug that the .srt subs stay at the screen. Maybe they are fixing it for the 2.52 version, and release at the same time a 1.52 and 3.52 version.
Strange i tried it out and it functioned.
1 little tip. You have to copy the video file and the subtitle on your s9 after the fw upgrade. And voila it works.
