View Full Version : S9 firmware 2.50
The international version - 2.50 is out now and available for download.

It seems the bluetooth thing was just for piaring with a A2DP receiver and not for some P3 like mobile phone pairing [sad]. Or was i the only one who thought about that from the rough english translations for 1.50 ?

No, you're not the only one....I though the same exact thing when I first read about x.50 firmware. Sadly there's nothing about this new firmware that's going to overcome my extreme laziness in clearing out my Flash UI and SOL folders to get a proper fresh install. Guess I'll stick to 2.41...
RsMac,
I find swipe-browsing a little more responsive, so have kept it (UCI overrides the ugly new menus anyway) but that really is it. It's a pretty poor fw upgrade all things taken into account.
Are the m3u playlists really working for everyone now?
I checked a few and they seemed ok, BUT then I ran into a whole bunch that show "no file". I am too lazy to double check if it's my fault and some of my m3u files are broken, but I really doubt it. But I'll double check later when I have time.

I quite like the new FW except I can't find a power off button, does anybody know?
Ok, now that 2.50 was out I was able to test the new fw myself, because I didn't want to install 1.50 and I must say: horrible. The blueish color of the first menu is a matter of taste but the theme/menu selector was better as you could change between themes directly. The second menu is hopefully customizable with Claw's soon and maybe he will be able to fix its errors: The dictionary icon is falling down during the start animation even if it isn't used in the 2.50 menu and somehow "disturbs" the animation because it is just vanishing between two other icons. And I hate that widget menu. Not only because it looks like it was designed for a six year old girl but the dragging of the screen didn't work for me. I was able to drag one screen by accident but wasn't able to drag it back again.
I am quite disappointed about this firmware update and since Flash was integrated to let the users design UCI's, Cowon should let them do it and offer more possibilities for them. I'd have appreciated if they had concentrated on this.
PS: I am sure about a power off button in the first menu where it always was.

Bluetooth works with windows 7 now! That's the best thing ever!
For me, the only thing that is improved in terms of visual design is the look (but not functionality) of the footer. For me this is a much nicer design that the old one, but wish they'd kept the three options being right there to chose from. Obviously since I'm using Claw the old footer is there anyway, and Aero has it's own menu selection.
Widgets menu looks like a pile of puke, but that's been replaced by Aero G2. Menu 1 is horrific, but is replaced by Claw UI anyway.
Second menu has potential, agree about the "drop in" animation being unneccesary and ugly. Hope Claw lets us turn that off, and replace the tiles with custom images of our own making, then it could be quite nice. The scrolling on it is quite poor though.
Because of UCI this fw hasn't changed much at all, so there's no need for it really.
But I maintain the browser scrolling is more responsive. Has anyone else found this or is it placebo on my part?

I'll stick to 2.41 for now until a bigger update comes. I don't care for the updates in this firmware update, especially the "faster" browsing as I use Cube's Browser which is head and shoulders better than Cowon's default browser.
Cowon, have some mercy.
how well the change menu GUI performs and looks is mostly subjective, but it really doesn't do anything a user-made UCI can't do better. just look at dnw's Aero Ultimate G2 UCI. look at that imagination. look at Claw's. do we need a blue background/buttons (the Samsung P3 has an infinitely calmer and more pleasing blue), and an essentially obsolete new footer in widgets mode (which is still detached as ever from the mainmenu - may as well drop a menu and integrate widgets into a mainmenu) which seems to be a coincidental mix between Claw's lock button and dnw's desklets.
and indeed, the widgets screen has more...widgets that look like they were haphazardly grabbed from somewhere with no taste. could probably conform some designs - look awkward... how 'bout that pig..
alright, so the point being...Cowon, you suck at design. (this is an objective opinion to some degree, some may not dislike the new design but just compare it to dnw's, asurada's, klaus', mr. bonheur's) no point trying to avoid accepting that. what you're best at is your media, what everyone loves you for is your extraordinary music quality and abundant file formats to make the most of music and the AMOLED screen.
other than that, great job on the subtitles addition and the bug fixes.
Wow, awesome, my s9 decided to not remove safely from my computer after i transferred the files from the 2.50 zip file to the s9, and now it says Invalid Resource :X FUCK
It is amusing that this "design based" fw came out at the same time as dnw's Aero G2.
A team of paid proffessional designers at a Korean electronics firm being comprehensively owned by a lone unpaid German guy doing some design in his spare time.
[laugh][rofl][laugh][rofl]
@ egrey1: I do not think that cowon "sucks" at design. I quite liked the original design of the S9 interface. I just like claw's and dnw's work a lot more now that I have those options.
@ EddieE: Don't you mean "pwned" :)
Anyways, all that aside, The only thing I really hope Cowon ends up doing sometime soon is a major improvement tot he picture interface. I hardly ever show off pictures on the s9 because it is so embarrassingly clunky trying to load the thumbnail view and scroll through pictures.
I'm too old to use the term pwned. That's for under 30s only. ;)

I like the blue instead of gray, but I wished that you could change the color (RGB selection)
But I don't like that it comes in between menu's when switching
hmm, sucks relative to the "lone unpaid _____ doing some design in his/her spare time" then. but I do mean the new interface
the original was certainly not extraordinary, but unassuming and clean
it's simply difficult to reconcile the original design to this children's cereal commercial style
Dominic, you got a S9 now? Or are you only agreeing with the major suckage of the new "design"? ;)

This is the new mainmenu 3, formerly the widgets thingamabob. It might be more useful now with included icons for audio/video/etc, than the old isolated collection of blinky things.
Thanks, dfkt.

Heh, I just couldn't hold back with the apostrophes. ;)
You can make the widget thing suck less and remove all the useless crap, but of course they were too ignorant to include a 24h clock (as used by 90% of all countries on this planet), and there's no raster/grid/snap as well. Also, not sure what they mean with the "recycling" icon.... In no way can it be compared to Claw's mainmenu or Aero Ultimate.

I agree with EddieE, it's a shame we lost the option to go from menu 1 to 3, 2 to 1, 3 to 1 and 3 to 2... Now we can only go from 1 to 2, 2 to 3 and 3 to 1.
What's the coffee cup icon do (in the new widgets)? I'm guessing it shows the S9's capacity, yeah? I noticed there's a couple different icons to show battery levels, so it stands to reason they made a couple variations of the file capacity...
It's just a "decoration icon"
all it does is steam comes out of it when you tap it
Attached is a pic of all the icons and what they do. From full feature list found here (http://www.cowonglobal.com/download/Firmware/COWONS9/GUIDE/2_50/en_s9_guide_b.html)

No, I believe that function is covered by the pig icon, obviously!
Have you guys noticed a suddenly very transparent Settings menu? or did I change some setting in Claw's that i'm unaware of?
Settings are now really translucent and the font is white. cool visually, but i can see how this might become difficult to see.

How does the bluetooth work on a Win. 7 PC? Is there a hardware component that has to be installed on the PC (a receiver of some sort?), or is the bluetooth just incorporated into the software? From my understanding of bluetooth, the S9 has to connect w/ another piece of hardware, does it not? Or is it the speakers connected to the PC that have bluetooth functionality?

you need a bluetooth receiver at the PC end to connect with bluetooth devices. some motherboards have them built-in - you'll have a "Bluetooth Devices" icon in your taskbar and/or control panel if it is
if not, there are cheap USB receivers you can buy

Sorry. I work better with metaphors and similes.
Yes, Bluetooth, just like a wireless network, and a wireless mouse, and other expansion items on a computer requires hardware to support it. to listen to sound, you need a sound card. to watch a video you need a video card. (or built in equivalents of these items). More motherboards are coming with bluetooth, but still it seems like 9 times out of 10, you're going to have to buy a usb adapter if you want to use BT.

Don't you think Cowon would announce a change in sound in the firmware changelog? People claimed the same stuff over and over with the D2 as well - I listened to two D2s side by side, with old and new firmwares, and there was ZERO difference. Too bad I can't do that with the S9, but I'm absolutely certain it's the same placebo effect again.

I bought my S9 for three reasons: AMOLED Screen, nice design (alternative to iPod Touch) and Cowon's sterling reputation for sound quality (always read references to Cowon while I used my iRiver Clix2). Frankly I think the original UI was rather uninspired, but it wasn't that big of a deal. Another thing I love about this player is this great community that contributes so much - yet 90% of what I see just isn't to my taste. I would never berate contributors, especially when it is so subjective ("objective opinion"??? you know who you are - just teasing). But this controversy over x.50 seems a little overboard in my humble opinion.
Kudos to Cowon for trying to inject some life into the S9's UI. And special thanks to Asurada for making one genuinely good looking UI (my subjective opinion of course).

cowon need to take the rough with the smooth. The only reason we buy their players is we want the best. If they're happy to accept our cash for their stellar sq they need to accept our fussiness too... Our criticism will help them make the s9 live up to the to the tag of "ultimate mp3". I agree with you we HAVE to cristicize to help them get better but can we try to give some constructive critics instead of subjective dislike ?
Agreed.
Saying something like "this sucks, i expected better" is a jerk move and not very helpful.
Tell what you like, tell what you don't like.
Example:
I think it was good on their part to try to improve the interface, especially since new owners might not ever find their way to our little community. On the flip side I kind of wish they would have just asked Claw or dnw or somebody here if Cowon could just use their design instead as the default. Seems like it would have saved Cowon time and money in the coding department.
Also, As I have stated before, I really wish they would improve their picture interface. I'm happy that it even plays pictures, but it's the only part of the S9 that I won't let my iPhone/iPod-Touch-using friends see because it is slightly embarrassing how laggy and not-smooth it scrolls.

I personally like the new blue background. And scrolling is faster along with the picture viewer. I use Aero G1 so theres no issue with it from me : D I'm just glad they released A firmware lol.. btw on that bass comment. Funny but unless my ears are wrong there seems to be a sligh change in the bass.
I'm listening to bass heavy songs on my regular EQ I use and the bass seems to be umm well tighter..
Hi guys! Im back to v2.41 (: Reason being, I don't like the blue background. I prefer the gray. ): Anyway, when im using 2.50, I find it kind of fast and most importantly the NEW GUI! :D
I think if you look at this thread you'll find those who weren't impressed with the new fw have been constructive.
We've said what we did like, we've said what we would have wanted to see as well, we've expressed a wish for functionality rather than comsetic changes and outlined what new functionality would be an improvement.
But when it comes to aesthetic dislike - well it is subjective entirely. If I was to list the reasons I don't like it (and I have) then someone else could equal list those exact same things as reasons they liked it, and neither would be wrong.
I could state that since aesthetics is so subjective, good designers goes for a neutral look and avoids bright colours. If you're trying to sell a house a wise move is to repaint the walls a neutral colour. While it may not make anyone's heart sing, it's far less likely to divide opinion.
In their old main menu one they had that down pat - simple, clear, greyscale icons with the odd dash of colour on a dark grey back drop, while hardly exciting, offended no one and pleased a lot of people.
In replacing this menu with a vivid blue background and day-glo coloured icons they took a risk of putting off a lot of people - not a safe strategy for a company looking for mass market appeal. They could have implemented this in main menu 2, which was already the colourful option, made main menu 2 mm3 and the widgets mm4. They took a risk in throwing away the only "grown up" menu option so they have to face the backlash on that. As mentioned, this UCI community is a small one, most new Cowon customers won't find it and be stuck with those options.
I'd add that while I liked the idea of the main menu 2 and still think it has a lot of potential UCI-wise. They never got around to implementing the simple list based interface which was present in the early FLA releases, and from the old icon for mm3 was clearly intented. Why not? That would be a nice edition I think.
If they wanted to make a change that was UI rather than functions based, they could have taken a page out of Claws book and made it easier for people without flash skills to customise. They could write into the code a simple way for people to replace icons, or the tiles on main menu 2, by putting the right sized .png in a dedicated folder, for example. As it would be written into the code it would probably be a lot easier on the processor than Claw's custom icons too.
They could have taken further pages out of Claw's book and made the visual elements of every page changeable in colour and size and position.
If they wanted to make visual changes, they could have given the user the power to do what they want to do with the look of their device rather than make those decisions for us and risk the ire of people with very different tastes to their design team.
Ultimately they could have done something that would actually change the experience and not the look of the device - like the much requested now playing queue, or "play all" button in folder browsing, or of course a better picture browser (I know they tweaked it a little in this version, but to be honest I don't see the big improvement others attest to).
Is that OK for constructive?
I totally agree with you EddieE but I have to correct you in one thing:
They never got around to implementing the simple list based interface which was present in the early FLA releases, and from the old icon for mm3 was clearly intented.
As far as I know this icon was implemented by Claw, not by Cowon. The original interface never had a third icon.
But the rest could have been written by myself. As I said in my previous post, I don't understand why they previously advertised a player with the the ability to use UCI's (user customizable/created interfaces) and now moved away from this as one of the main features. I don't know if anybody else recognized it, but that feature description is not even mentioned in detail anymore on the Cowon site (cowonglobal.com).
They talk about:
Full UCI - Advanced GUI System
Just the way I want it UCI
The user-oriented interface of Cowon S9 has fully implemented a Full UCI that transcends a simple change and can express any content. Keeping the outstanding features and the exquisite design of S9 intact, you can adjust the internals to suit your preferences to rebirth the Cowon S9 as your own.
And that's mentioned somewhere at the bottom of the GUI description. As far as I remember (but I might be wrong) the UCI's (meaning user created interfaces) were one of the main features being advertised. So I have to ask myself, why do they work on new GUI's if they could have enhanced the players ability to be customized by the users instead? There are enough things mentioned by our programmers here, from a higher flash version to a more open firmware to access more information.
The third mainmenu is created by Cowon, but they didn't make it accessible for any reason.
Oops, didn't know that so thx for correcting me and my excuses to EddieE. Now I can fully support his statement.
Yeah I downloaded a pack of FLAs from an earlier fw and the list main menu (and the icon claw uses for mm3) was there, plain to see. They never gave us it though. It's a menu format which is one of their best I think. Do wonder why they never gave us that....
So I have to ask myself, why do they work on new GUI's if they could have enhanced the players ability to be customized by the users instead?
Yeah. The fact that Claw has managed to offer non-flash programmers the ability to customise shows Cowon how it could be done. And I'm sure if those abilities were coded it wouldn't result in such slower speeds that Claw can with too much turned on as well.
It could be really simple - a series of pre-made folders in the S9 for -
User icons menu 1
User tiles menu 2
User icons menu 3
And a little guide on what to call the files for the S9 to assign them to the right places in the UI.
And then a Claw like settings menu for changing colours, positions of other elements etc, wallpapers etc.
To be fair to them the simplicity of changing to a user font they already offer should be applauded - but more of it Cowon - more of it! :D

Actually, that's something I've been meaning to post about. I have an audio album in MP4 format, but it shows up in my Videos on the S9. They won't play in the Videos screen (I get an error message in the Video screen), and it won't show up in the Music screen! When I use the Folders option to open them it just tries to play in the Video screen, then fails. Boo. :(
Let's hope they start to officially support AAC/M4A soon... it was always there, unofficially on the D2, and the S9 supported (or at least recognized) MP4 containers since quite a few firmware updates already. It's inexcusable to not support the 2nd most popular audio codec after MP3.

Boo. :(
I take it you are a prior Apple owner, time to convert that music to the REAL standard of music formats, MP3 BABY (OGG and FLAC is good as well)!

Let's hope they start to officially support AAC/M4A soon... it was always there, unofficially on the D2, and the S9 supported (or at least recognized) MP4 containers since quite a few firmware updates already. It's inexcusable to not support the 2nd most popular audio codec after MP3.
I never really listened to aac/m4a files, but my buddy tried to give me some music to listen to when i was out in chicago and a good 1/3rd of the songs was m4a format. now i wish we had that kind of playback [sad]

the problem is that converting it into another lossy format starts sounding horrible. and converting to a lossless (like FLAC) is a space waster (3 times the size or more). Not a real good solution no matter what
nobody in their right mind transcodes lossy to FLAC.
You cant recover lost data like that. And FLAC is not a waste! It SOUNDS AMAZING for certain tracks!!
Oh, i though .MP4 files were video files to begin with (and apple made audio files out of them)
MP4 is a container format which can hold audio and/or video. The MP4 container often has the suffix .m4a for audio files. Those M4A files contain usually AAC audio.

ugh. Adapada: try reading before you post. this is so asinine that I almost don't want to respond.
I was saying that since we can't play aac or m4a, you have to convert those to a format the S9 supports. And if you transcode a lossy file -> another lossy file, the sound degrades even further, and it sucks (it sucks a lot). so going from m4a -> mp3 is a bad idea. so if you want to keep the same sound quality that you had in an m4a (and be able to play it on our S9), then you would have convert it to a lossless. I.E. Not losing any MORE quality.
unless there is a program that re-writes the file headers and can make an aac or m4a INTO an mp3 without re-encoding it.
My bad, I never knew I was so dumb.
I guess I didn't understand that the first time.
Maybe I'll stay out of this debate (to further spare your words). I was simply trying to clarify what the format .MP4 was actually for (since I do not have a single .m4a file)
edit: I understand your frustration though with the incompatibility.

just for the record, while transcoding lossy to lossy is generally a bad idea, it's not a sure thing that your end result will sound like absolute crap
you're still going to end up with a net quality loss, and the potential for really nasty artifacts is present - but it's also possible that you either won't notice the loss, or that you won't really care about it, since everyone's ears are different
I'd recommend trying a transcode to ogg vorbis at a bitrate lower than the bitrate of the original file, but no lower than 192kbps. if your files are already that quality or lower, then forget it...

ew. wouldn't lower bitrate be an even further degradation of quality?
Anyways, the problem i always run into is audio artifacting in the higher frequencies. kinda like a constant squawking from a bird...like that noise that all online radio stations used to have, know what I'm referring to?
Also, ADA, didn't mean to insult you or put you down. I was just annoyed from staring at coding assignment all night and not understanding any of it.

i dont know anything about audio formats and conversion, but would it be possible to convert fromt he aac to flac, and then from the flac to mp3 or wma or whichever?
Generally speaking you can convert from any type of audio file TO any type of audio file.
But if you start with a "less-than-perfect-quality-song" and are eventually trying to get to another type of "less-than-perfect-quality-song", you will lose more sound quality and introduce bad sounds (nasties, as I call them) into the song that were not there before. It doesn't matter if you try to convert to a "lossless" quality in the middle. Once you lost quality, you can't magically put the quality back.
Simile Time:
It's like,
(A) If you have a beautiful photograph (this would be the CD in our metaphor)
and
(B) Somebody makes a drawing of the photo (this is an MP3, it represents the CD).
The drawing doesn't look as good as the photo, but it's still nice (just like an MP3 isn't as nice as a CD).
(C) If you then take a photograph of the drawing,
you do not get the original photograph back.
It's still just a copy of the drawing.
(this would be the suggestion of turning a lossy format (aac) into a lossless (flac) ).
So, while you aren't losing anything MORE, you aren't gaining anything either.
(D) And then if you try to draw a picture OF the photograph (C) OF the drawing (B) of the original photograph (A), well, clearly the further you get away from the original photo, the more awful the picture is going to look compared to the original.
Think about the game "telephone" when you are a child and keep whispering what you thought you heard to the next person in line. the further you get down the line, the less it sounds like the original.
um...make sense? I think I made sense, but I might be rambling.
Btw, this is just information for anyone trying to figure out what I'm rambling about. Don't take it as flaming or insulting or anything. I'm tired so I'm not sure how this reads. lol
BACK ON TOPIC:
Can we get AAC support and a new picture browser? :)

I'm assuming that Cowon is listening to the community. I mean they have a direct link to user made UI's and to this very website so that should show something. Perhaps they are doing certain updates in steps and will release a total audio update firmware.
Just seeing them releasing and working on improving the S9 makes me happy. Plus the blue background is pretty : D
I think they listen to the community. Or at least, try for the best of their abilities to pay attention to us. they can't have people lurking in every forum, keeping up with every little post that happens though.
I mentioned this very early on in the thread and I haven't been keeping up to see if it was fixed.
So are M3U lists finally fixed or not with x.50?
I'm still seeing missing tracks, but I'm not sure if it's my lists that are faulty or it's the firmware.

i noticed that after upgrading to 2.50, if you play music in one album, when the album ends, it switches to the next album, instead of restarting. Also, if the artist ends, it switches to the next artist, instead of restarting.
is this a Claw UI setting that i accidentally switched, or a fw difference? i know some people requested it, but I personally dont like the "feature"

for me it is working now as welll.
i have an old m3u with 2 missing titles, but this is caused through removing the files from the s9, but keeping the entries in the m3u.
so for me m3u is fixed.
thanks to cowon.
I do not have such a feature - and it has to be implemented in FW only.

So, consecutive folder playing seems to be now possible in 2.50. That's quite a nice firmware revision if that's the case. I'll give it a go
It seems my old M3U's created years ago are not compatible with the S9 (no tracks in them), even though they work on media monkey. I cannot even remember what they were created with.
But my recent M3U's look fine. I haven't checked them all, but I've yet to find one missing tracks.

they are basically just text files. Try to open one with Notepad or Wordpad and see if they are relative or fixed (does it say C:\blah blah blah\... .mp3) ?
if you created them years ago, then that means you didn't have your s9 yet. and although it's not required to build the playlists while your s9 is plugged in, that would make it a lot easier.
All my M3U's are relative. I do them that way so I can move them around between PCs and media devices. No need to create them on the S9 directly, the new ones work fine and they were created on a PC and dragged and dropped.
I opened up a few in Notepad++
The old ones are just a plain list of files
The new ones have a "#EXTINF:" tag before each file ex:#EXTM3U
#EXTINF:234,3 Doors Down - Kryptonite
01. Kryptonite.mp3
#EXTINF:264,3 Doors Down - Loser
02. Loser.mp3
#EXTINF:230,3 Doors Down - Duck And Run
03. Duck And Run.mp3
So I've 2 different formats of M3U files, for whatever reason. I'll have to go thru and update the old incompatible format that I have.
Now that I think about it the old M3U's might have been done on a very old version of WinAmp, I think 2.x ... the last version of WinAmp that I used :P

Hey, is it just me, or does the radio volume seemed toned down from 2.41? It seems I have to up the volume about 8 steps to achieve the same loudness as before. Sort of a nuisance if I decide to switch from listening songs to radio (have to turn of the volume, as opposed to doing nothing)
On a side note, does the S9 really supposed normal m3u? It it were true, that'd be excellent!!!
Again, I'll ask: what does the bluetooth on the S9 now work on? (it said it can pair with phones on cowon global)
Ada, I haven't had any luck pairing the s9 with the phone, well it pairs, but I can't do anything after that. However, on the computer, you can stream s9's playback to the computer's speaker (at least I know it does on Win. 7, but I assume it's the same for all other OS's).

you're wasting your time:
Added function that return to work with COWON S9 after hanging up cell phone when your Bluetooth device is
multi-paired with COWON S9 and cell phone.
it never says you can pair your S9 and cell phone. it says that when pairing a bluetooth device capable of doing multi-pairing to the S9 AND a phone, you can go back to your S9 after you're done using your phone with reconnecting to your S9.
so it looks like this: S9 <--- multi-pairing device ---> cell phone
not: S9 <---> cellphone

Really? Assuming you have got a Bluetooth receiver of some sought enabled on your PC, it should show up as a device on the S9. Although why anyone would want to do this beats me. You can't send/receive files or receive a transmitted Bluetooth stream. All you would be able to do is stream S9 files to your PC for live playback. The chances are you've got those files on your PC anyway, if not, then plug it in via USB lead. It'll sound better that way anyway

I don't think that's possible. The files have to have the same exact naming before the .srt suffix as the avi file name for the link to work. It's automated in selecting the file if the option for subtitles is activated.

SAMI (Synchronized Accessible Media Interchange) is a Microsoft (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microsoft) accessibility initiative released in 1998. The structured markup language is designed to simplify creating captions for media playback on a PC, i.e. not for broadcast purposes.
SAMI documents are text, and can be written in any text editor, although there are special utilities available to create SAMI documents. They use .smi or .sami file extensions. The common use of .smi for SAMI files creates a file extension collision with SMIL (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synchronized_Multimedia_Integration_Language) files.
Each SAMI document may contain more than one language.
SAMI is the predominant caption (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caption) file format in South Korea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/South_Korea).

Yes sometimes my player also did that.
The funny thing was that I thought I did something wrong, so I tried sometimes to set the shut down to one minute, play and pause one music file and waited 1 minute, and the player always turned off.
However sometimes, it just happened that it did not turned off after I paused one song and on next switch on was the battery only half full.
So I just downgraded to 1.41 and am happy again, subtitles are all working again, I can use 3 different UCIs again and I don't miss any of the achievements of the version 1.50.
This fw is really not a digital pride but rather a digital shame for Cowon, but I still hope that they will learn from their errors and will release tested firmwares even if it takes a bit longer.

I am thinking this might be the root cause of my troubles (see S9 bricked thread).

3 files for firmware 2.50
COWON_S9_FT2.bin
COWON_S9_FW.BIN
COWON_S9_RS3.BIN
Where are you downloading the files from? and what browser are you using?
Try clearing your temporary internet files, browser history and cache.
It's possible your browser is just trying to load the badly downloaded file from its cache. (if you have no idea how to clear your temporary files, go get the FREE program CCleaner (Crap Cleaner)

Here's the americas link for 2.50

^ Awesome, thanks for the link. I reside in Australia and chose English>Non EU>USA as my region. Must the FW update be relevant to said region?
I used both IE and Firefox 3.5 (installed only yesterday) and the file crapped out downloading at exactly the same point, so I am fairly sure that the problem wasn't related to private data/cache etc. (which I clean up regularly).
As for the player not turning off after a minute when media is paused or stopped... I noticed that if i turn off the hold button, the player will turn off after 1 minute. Only when the hold button is on will the player stay on if paused and won't turn off after a minute... leaving you with a quarter/half drained battery overnight.
New verion is well but
i was thinking that 2.50 will have mkv and rmvb file format
is there any solution on it?

No.
You can't play mkv on cowon because the hardware cannot decode it.
That's simple as that :)
MKV is just a container format, there's nothing hardware-intensive to decode. But it usually contains audio/video codecs the S9 doesn't support.

Actually, Matroska appears to contain xvid or x264 for the video usually, and ogg vorbis for the audio, which all three are supported by the s9.
However the s9 seems to only play h264/x264 when the resolution is resized. I wonder if we resize the MKV if the s9 would play it(I haven't tried this idea yet, but I doubt that it has a "media splitter" built in)
Yeah, technically there wouldn't be a lot of issue. However, Vorbis in any video container is certainly not supported on the S9, only in an audio Ogg container. h264/AVC support seems limited to Baseline profile, not Main, Extended, or High (or maybe a very low level Main profile is supported, I'm not sure). And that doesn't make much sense anyways, since CAVLC/Baseline encoded material is hardly any superior to XviD, whereas CABAC makes all the difference, MKV container or not.
On the other hand, it's extremely easy to simply repack streams from inside a MKV container into an MP4 or even AVI container, and try one's luck if the file plays on the S9. :)
it pairs with cellphones ? it works like the Samsung bluewave feature ?
