My D2 with the newest rockbox on it plays 96kHz/24bit FLAC files [blink]

Does it really play in this quality or is it resampled to 48kHz/16bit? [confused]

No, in fact it's slightly worse than that as everything is resampled to 44.1kHz / 16bit. That's just the way Rockbox is designed at the moment - but at least you can play the files! :)
