View Full Version : Battery life - sudden huge decrease
Down to 4 hours or so, - I'll spare you the setup config, but previous battery life with it was 30+ hours. I've tried full discharge/recharge via pc and USB mains adaptar, reinstalling FW - no good. I'm trying one last full charge+ extra time, then do another test, but I am not optimistic...
Obviously I'm sending the player back for repair, but I wondered if you experts here know what/why/how?! I've used it pretty intensely during the last two weeks or so while in transit and in the US, but only charged it once while there, but otherwise I am a moderate user, not an addict! I bought the player on release, December last year, and is otherwise in A1 condition.
As always thanks for any advice and help.

Bluetooth somehow enabled now? Maybe now playing different format files or eq/jeteffect settings?
Not sure what else it could be. Li-ion batteries like frequent charges (try not to drain the battery all the way often) and moderate temperatures. If it was always very warm or cold that could hurt the battery over time.
Some good reading on li-ion batteries: http://www.batteryuniversity.com/parttwo-34.htm and http://www.batteryuniversity.com/partone-12.htm

Are you draining the battery and then charging? Most Li-Ion batteries have a limited lifespan of about 500 discharge/charge cycles. If you are, don't, it'll save your battery. Instead charge it before the battery goes into low-battery power saving mode.
Im also having problems with my battery life. I thought the s9 was supposed to have an extremely strong battery. I loved my x5l, but not sure about the s9. Dying after 10 hours is just ridiculous and im not really too happy with this player. Any advice...?
Thanks everyone.
Well, I'm happy but confused! I stopped my last test at 27 hours+, with the battery showing only a quarter gone!
As said, this charge was going to be longer - about 12 hours or so, via mains/USB - I got the "battery full" after 3 hours, I let it continue, but the icon was still "filling" (others have reported this, but I've never bothered to look at the charging screen before because I've never had a problem).
My last 3 charges, with the 4 hour battery life, were via mains and pc (twice, different pcs), and were no different to anything I've done before. Nothing else new either - no new settings, UCIs, sound settings - nada.
Rogue calibration? Because I've charged via 2 ways - and via 2 pcs - I can't see how it can be a hardware fault?
Whatever - happy! I agree with the advice above, and that's been my charging routine - plenty and often. Before I did these tests, I guess I've let the battery die completely, 5 or 6 times, no more.
I'll keep an eye on it. Many thanks for the help.

Hi guys my s9 is barely 3 days old and the battery life is about 3-4 hours max. I have it on 2.41 firmware and I dont watch any videos. I charged it untill it displayed 'fully charged' 4-5 hours. Is there something wrong? with my s9? it's brand new [no]
You have to go thru 4-5 charge cycles at least before the battey reaches optimal performance.
That's the nature of Lithium Polymer batteries.

Maybe takes even more cycles. Drain the battery till it's half full(or half empty[blink]) Then charge till full. Repeat this at least 5+ times. If the battery doesn't kick-into-longlife-action, start to worry

@trent and @Don't panic thanks for the advice guys I will try those methods fingers crossed.
My battery suddenly went dead yesterday, too, though I had been using my S9 in sleep mode. Anyone have any idea of battery usage when keeping the player always in sleep mode?
When charging, is the charging indication supposed to show all the time until charged? After a while the screen goes blank on mine, and after another indeterminate period, I have to use the on/off switch to get the charging screen back.
One thing I find annoying is that the S9 is not able to be used whilst it is charging.

No don't think so, after a while the screen goes off.

That is not true if you use a wallcharger, when the S9 is on plug it in and there is a wallcharger symbol where the battery icon use to be.
So I can listen to music if I am using a wall charger? If that's true, then a wall charger is next on the shopping list. Any recommendations for a wall charger, considering I am in the UK?
My first S9 conformed to expectations - I never drained it, gave it regular top-ups and only saw the 'three-quarters left' on the icon after a good 15 hours of audio. Then the beast died mysteriously and I got a replacement under warranty.
This new S9 was treated the same way- big initial charge, and always fill up the battery after 5-10 hours max - but it's dropping to the 'three-quarters left' on the icon almost immediately - after maybe 1 hour of playing. I've played it to drain the battery as a test and got maybe 8-10 hours of audio. Sheesh.
How can there be such a difference between 2 new S9's???
Another thought: my S9 lives in the cowon leather pouch which insulates the back and would keep the temperature higher than without it - but then again, the first S9 which performed so well was in the pouch too....
...sorry for the ramble, but you all know how I feel....[unsure]
Apologies for bumping my own thread, but it may be of interest to some that my battery life has now increased - up from ~ 33 hours to over 40, same settings, same FW.
Seems to prove that the minimum 4-5 complete charge/discharge cycles for optimum performance suggestion is right on the money.
A welcome surprise for an 11 month old unit!

ls103rb,
Did you drain the battery, utterly and completely until the player stopped, or to 50% as suggested in another post here??? Do tell, and I'll do the same. cheers, foggy
I had problems with battery life too. But after doing as said, to about 50% (no lower than 25%), I've gotten tons more battery life.
1st cycle: 4h
2nd cycle: 8h
3rd cycle: 14h
4th cycle: 22h
5th cycle: pending
