View Full Version : S9 Firmware X.40/X.41 bug REPORT thread

Mr. Black
08-13-2009, 11:06
As before (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=29896) the purpose of this thread is list out various bugs you may have found in the S9's latest firmware update, so that we may then forward on this thread to the good folks at Cowon Korea.
Please make sure to follow the below guidelines before posting a "bug".

This is the format to use to report bugs: (answers are for example purposes)

Problem: Write down what the problem is (example ID3 Tag issue)

Expanded Description: Give a more detailed description of the bug you're reporting

Capacity & Model: Note the capacity of your S9, eg. 32gb - If you own the DMB model please note as such, eg. 32gb DMB

Firmware: Note the firmware you've loaded eg. 1.40, 2.40 or 3.40

Things to remember:
Have you tried reinstalling the firmware? (sometimes this solves abnormal behaviour)
Are you using a custom UCI? as it may be the cause of your issue.

Problem: corrupted playlist when there is more than one m3u in a directory.

Expanded Description: m3u playlists still do not work correct. it is a different behaviour than in x.31 b2 (see http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=250516&postcount=2), but still weird and makes m3u unusable.

in x.31 b2 the effect was like an m3u was filled from another m3u (showed more entries) and now it is the opposite.
the content of a m3u is reduced depending on the number of entries of the previous m3u.

here is what i tested:

- had just 1 m3u called:
electro (324 entries/showed up with 324 entries) OK

- added another one called "new" and had this result:
electro (324 entries/showed up with 324 entries) OK
new (55 entries/showed up with 55 entries) OK

- added another one called "mix" and had this result:
electro (324 entries/showed up with 324 entries) OK
mix(40 entries/showed up with 40 entries) OK
new (55 entries/showed up with 40 entries) NOT OK !!!

- renamed "new" to "anew" to change the alphabetical order and got this result:
anew (55 entries/showed up with 55 entries) OK
electro (324 entries/showed up with 41 entries) NOT OK !!!
mix(40 entries/showed up with 40 entries) OK

- renamed "anew" back to "new" and renamed "mix" to "amix" and got this result:
amix (40 entries/showed up with 40 entries) OK
electro (324 entries/showed up with 30 entries) NOT OK !!!
new (55 entries/showed up with 40 entries) NOT OK !!!

- deleted "amix" and got this result:
electro (324 entries/showed up with 324 entries) OK
new (55 entries/showed up with 55 entries) OK

- renamed "new" to "anew" and got this result:
anew (55 entries/showed up with 55 entries) OK
electro (324 entries/showed up with 41 entries) NOT OK !!!

thats what i call weird ;-)

***edit***
- tested with 1.41 and the 2 m3u's from above. result:
anew (55 entries/showed up with "no files") NOT OK !!!
electro (324 entries/showed up with 41 entries) NOT OK !!!

so it is different with new fw, but more worse ....

Come on Cowon... are my cries falling on deaf ears [dots]

Problem: Can't go to next/previous album in Album/Artist Sorting
Description: If you are in ALBUM or ARTIST sorting, you can't go to the next or previous albums you selected, it's a bug everyone knows about. Let say you are playing an album and get to the last song, well no matter what setting you have (ALL, LOOP, etc.), it will loop right back over again in the same album- you can't go to the next or previous album unless you MANUALLY pick it from the Library browser. This bug though, does NOT exist in FOLDER Sorting, which is what I have mine setup as.
Firmware: 2.41
Capacity: 16GB

Problem: New Matrix Coverflow FORCES Album Sorting
Description: ALBUM sorting is so FORCED with Coverflow that despite you let's say used FOLDER Sorting before you turned off the device, if you have coverflow still on, when you turn back on the device it will be in ALBUM Sorting (no matter what you do before). Try it for yourself and you'll see what I mean. So I would like an option to sort it anyway you want so we do not run into this FORCED ALBUM sorting. Maybe look for album covers 1 to 2 folders deep and then go 1-2-3 folders deep for songs, seems easy...

Problem: Slow transition to the music screen.

Expanded Description: I'm not sure if this is a real problem, but I felt that it was worth reporting. I am using the Korean firmware on an American purchase, so that may be the issue, but with the same UCIs in both cases the music screen properly loads a few seconds slower. I'm not sure if this is the JetEffect 3.0 or simply the Korean software having difficulty handling my American files, but it was rather frustrating and may be worth a look at.

Capacity & Model: 32GB

Firmware: 1.41

EDIT: Nevermind, this happened when I changed the firmware back as well, so I'm really confused as to exactly what's happening.

Problem: Random subtitle omits and random subtitle load display failure.

Expanded Description: Using .srt or .smi subtitles, the S9 sometimes randomly omits single subtitles. When skipping around inside the video, subtitles sometimes fail to display, sometimes even more than one.

Short Description: Please improve subtitle playback.

Problem: ID3v2 tags shown as 'Unknown'
Expanded Description: I use foobar2000 to tag mp3 files. By default it uses ID3v2.4 tags that s9 can not read for some reason. But it can then 'ID3v2 compatibility mode' turned on in foobar2000 preferences (don't know what it means for sure, maybe ID3v2.3).

Problem: Subtitle error with regionnal letters

Expanded Description: Each subtitle having accentuated letter need to be fixed: in a word with a letter like "é, è, à, â, ô, ç or ù" the following letter disappear (it is never displayed)

Capacity & Model: S9 - 16GB
Firmware: 2.41

Personal solution: just add a space after these letters. This space will be erase, not the next (real) letter

Problem: video seek interval don't correspond to the setting

Expanded Description: contrary to the audio seek, video seek behavior is wrong. Before, I've got the firmware 2.30: seek was ok. Now, we can't choose anymore 5, 10, 30 or 50 seconds: it's 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5. But 5 what? It's not 5 seconds and it's buggy :(

Problem: Last few seconds of mp3 playback is cut off

Problem: Different playback handling between choosing album by folder and by cover art in cover matrix.

Expanded Description: I don't know if its a bug or a feature. When you choose an album to play from the cover matrix view then all the tracks will be played again one by one when the last track in this selected album has been arrived. its not possible to jump to the next folder/previous folder. its only possible to navigate inside the tracks of the responding album.

When you play an album by choosing an album by folder, when u reached the last track and this one ends, the first track from the next folder will be played automaticly...

why cowon made a difference in the handling here? it seems that the cover matrix always plays only the selected album.

100% agree

In firmware 2.31.b2 it was much easier to touch the correct position to activate the blue arrow to mark the desired track. i need lots of touches to begin playback...

But Claw's Wallpaper UI has remedied this for me.[thumbsup]

Problem: unbalanced music

Expanded Description: Ok, this is weird. Since 2.41, I experience on some track that music volume is stronger in one canal (left one). I though first it was coming from the encoding of my mp3. Problem is that it is not always the same mp3 affected. I don't think it is the headphone problem as it start with the lecture of the mp3 and end up on the next. I didn't have this problem before and I suspect the firmware. So let's say that I'm reporting this in case somebody else experiences the same problem...

Expanded Description: when u found a mp3 file on your player which has wrong or incomplete idtag data and you want to update this file (overwrite the existing one with the updated one), then the s9 player doesnt show the updated idtag data.

i have found a little work around to solve this ugly problem. first u have to delete the file u want to update/exchange/overwrite. at 2nd u copy the updated file. then the s9 shows all tag data correctly...

its a very strange bug...

Problem: Unable to play or browse music

Expanded Description: When I open the music player it gives some strange 100 chars long korean/japanese/chinese string as album and artist, and Unknown for the title. When I try to browse for a normal music file (I have about 9GB of OGG and 3GB of FLAC music on the unit) it only displays my videos. Tried reloading my music and videos, no change. Tried reset (with button and using Prefs->System->Default settings), no change. Reverted back to FW 2.31b2 and it seems to be alright. Now putting back my music and videos... This only happend after installing the ?uzzle UCI by Luna, but deleting this (and the contents of the Flash UI folder) did not fix it. Tried a few different UCIs, but no change.

One thing is sure... I don't even want an UCI on this thing anymore [surrend]

This is really too bad, I liked the new Crystal Clear and Reverb Stage presets. Maybe I'll get them back when 2.42b is released [unsure]

Problem: All albums only display 18 tracks maximum.

Description: First i thought it was a problem with my playlists because some would work flawlessly while others would not show all the songs. So i did some investigating with my S9 and it turns out when a song can't be recognized due to a syntax error (ie. a folder beginning with a period) it will not display therefore all the songs that come after it within the playlist will not show as well. So the good news is i figured that out but that bad news is with more investigation i noticed that the reason some other songs weren't showing up in the playlist is because the Cowon S9 would not show them period. From what I observed every single album I have cuts off at track 18, even when i have many more tracks in the album. I'm wondering if anyone has had this issue or not. I know this always was not the case for i recall listening to songs that were track 22 or so in particular albums so it has to be a firm update problem or perhaps an bug with Claws UCI but I'm not sure which one it could be.

P.S. I should also add that my S9 will only display 18 tracks maximum per album when i access my music through the folder selection. If i access my music through the albums or genres or etc.. i do not get this problem. However, I still think that it is not allowing me to use those tracks that come after #18 in a m3u playlist file due to this bug.

Problem: M3U recognition doesn't work anymore

Expanded Description: Though my different M3U playlists were reconized well in 2.31b2 and worked perfectly, since I upgraded to 2.41 my M3Us are shown correctly in "playlist" folder on the root but when I select one of them I can only see in the M3U folder either 3 or 4 tracks or sometimes none. I'm sure my M3Us are in the correct version (made by winamp or mediamonkey).
Maybe there is a link with the fact there still are some old version M3Us not updated by me and not reconized by the S9 on my disk. These one appear in the "playlist" folder but I don't use them, because they are not supported (logical).

Expanded Description: since upgrading to 2.41, my touch screen is occasionally non-responsive, with the screen needing to be touched a number of times to induce the desired action. Most of the time it's fine and works like a dream. But sometimes I even have to press the menu knob on top to get the screen responsive again. I've seen others discussing the same problem on "anything but ipod" forums so it doesn't appear to be just my S9, but something related to 2.41 itself. I never experienced tis problem with previous firmware.

I've discovered the same problem after fw 2.41 Update. I'm primarily an audiobook listener so playlists are short, 6 to 15 tracks. On every playlist entered since fw 2.41 they always appear just fine in the playlist folder, but when you open them only 40% to 60% of the tracks are listed, starting with Track 1 and the list truncates at about Track 6 to 8 on a 16 track playlist.
I use Mp3TAG and have made no changes in settings etc. and use MSC exclusively for file transfers, and place the complete folder, including all tracks plus the M3U file and a Text file into a root folder "Audio Books"; worked great with fw 2.31b but no longer! I tried downloading a book previously listened (to prior to fw 2.41) and it too was now missing the last half of the tracks.
I run Claw's UCI (Super-Thanks Much Claw) which I updated to his latest 3.38, shortly after the fw 2.41 update and initially wondered if their may be a conflict, but I think I'll drop back to fw 2.31b2 and see if that corrects the problem.
BTW all playlists which are short tracks on the S9, work fine when opened by MediaMonkey or WMP...

[Update] I reverted back to 2.31b2 and all is well again with M3U Playlists !

Problem 1: FLAC Files copied using Windows Vista can not be read

Expanded Description 1: Flac files have to be truncated to *.fla in Vista (using Win XP *.flac works) otherwise the player does not list them

Problem 2: Subtitle files having western European extended characters (umlauts: "ä", "ö", "ü" and ß) are displayed wrong

Expanded Description 2: The first character after an umlaut (e.g. "ö") is not displayed. E.g "möchte" is displayed as "möhte" (c is missing). In order to fix that you have to search and replace the whole subtitle file so that after an umlaut a space is inserted (like "mö chte"). This is however not a real solution, because if you use your S9 as an external device, than the subtitles are displayed wrong again.

Problem 3: Missing MTP mode in Korean FW

Expanded Description 1: I don't see any reason for restricting the Korean FW to MSC mode. It should be possible to switch to MTP mode so that automatic synchronization with other SW than JetAudio (which does not work for me on Vista for some reason) is easier.

Problem 4: Play Folder/All does not function if album is selected

Expanded Description 4: It should be possible to play the next album if one album has been finished. Best solution would be to extend the current menu as following: All / Folder / Album. In this case "All" should play all songs, "Folder" all from the selected folder and "Album" (which can be replaced by interpreter, genre, etc. according to the selected ID Tag Filter) only the selected Album, Interpreter etc...

- renamed "new" to "anew" and got this result:
anew (55 entries/showed up with 55 entries) OK
electro (324 entries/showed up with 41 entries) NOT OK !!!

thats what i call weird ;-)

anew (55 entries/showed up with "no files") NOT OK !!!
electro (324 entries/showed up with 41 entries) NOT OK !!!

so it is different with new fw, but more worse ....

Capacity & Model: 16GB

Firmware: firmware 1.40 and more unusable with 1.41 (unbelievable, that they didn't get this to work ...)

Yep. It has to do with the number of songs in each playlist. Here's the list history through ordering. (used renaming to order, but I'll keep their names in this example to simplify it)

Cafe - 400 Songs (OK)
Melodie's - 16 Songs (OK)
Shred It - 200 Songs (BAD)
Summer Chill - 77 Songs (BAD)

Basically, whenever a shorter playlist appeared before other playlists, those other playlists were limited to a similar number as that playlist. So, if you order them all from largest to smallest, the problem is eliminated. Hopefully Cowon can figure this out soon.
