View Full Version : Are there any more worthy firmwares coming out?

It seems like with each new firmware release they break more than they fix, and don't fix the bugs I've actually noticed (pan and scan, random crashing, MP3 seeking). They add a couple of funny features (comic book viewer) while ignoring the important features that people want (video equalization, metadata browsing), and there is no hint that there will ever really be a significant new update.

So what's going on with the O2 development team? Is the O2 close to becoming end-of-life? If so, I'm disappointed. It's a pretty decent device as-is, but it had the potential to be much more.

And the Thing is I would be happy if they just fix those two things, give me the EQ in the Video section, and allow it to read ID Tags, if they did that they could stop putting out FW's.

In reality, it took a while longer for the significant d2 updates to come out also. They still come out with firmware updates for some of their older players. I hope they get fixed, but nobody here can tell you for sure. My 2 important would be gesture support and video sq. Getsure probably wont happen. But I dont see the hold up for the video sq.

The problem is that every body has their own list of things to improve. Some people hate the ui, some hate the smaller buttons, ans some people hate it all. Dont hold your breath on anything.

If they fixed one though, the video SQ should be it. This is a video centric player, so it should completely play the part. If it had a 2 inch screen, I wouldnt care. But its 4.3 inches, and needs the audio to back it up.

That's a good point, and one I often forget. I don't think there will ever be a Holy Grail firmware for the O2 that fixes everything, but Cowon must know that there's a top 5 things that everybody gripes about and they should focus on correcting those issues. Far be it for me to type that here and for it to actually happen, though...

I'm in a different boat than most. I bought the O2 believing it would be nice to have for a new job, where I was going to be traveling several times a month. The travel thing never happened at this job, so I rarely use the O2 to watch movies. I listen to music probably 90% of the time, sitting at my desk, and it has been pretty good for that, with only a few issues.

I am keeping my eye on that rockbox thread though...

Well, enjoy the beautiful sound coming through the headphones from the music. That, no one complains about:)

Depends, I guess. I think there's a consensus to stay the hell away from 1.33 because it broke a few functions that worked fine in earlier firmware versions.

I am on 1.27C and it is pretty much fine for what I need.

I upgraded all the way to 1.33 and I am yet to find a complaint. It's not as flawed as people think.....note the operative word here is "think"

I agree. I don't know what specifically "broke" from the 1.31 to the 1.33 firmware.

Can anyone give a list of the problems that are broken? I scanned the 1.33 thread, and I'm confused. It appears that there really isn't anything, just complaining about an update that was useless (of which I agree), but nothing is "broken" from what I see.

I am running 1.33, and I don't see any difference from 1.31 to 1.33. I also find the Manga viewer useless for me. Others think differently, but that's fine. I don't consider it a bad firmware update because it included something I won't use. I just won't use the feature. Like an email I don't want, I can choose not to read it and then just delete it.

I think tpilk is getting the O2's 1.33 firmware mixed with the A3's 1.33 firmware, I don't think anything extra was broken in O2's 1.33 FW?

This must be the solution then.

No, I was thinking of Pan & Scan being broken, but maybe it isn't after all.
I was just misinformed.

So it turns out that the only reason I'm not upgrading is because the new firmwares are still kind of useless, not because there's actually anything wrong with them.

Next time I should try to wash my foot off a little before I put it in my mouth.

It's still broken, but it was broken before FW 1.33

By the way the "Pan & Scan" feature doesn't really "scan" does it? To me, it is just a zoom feature, right? I don't think it really does anything more than just make the image larger.

Does anyone have a different experience with the feature?

yeah it's sort of misleading, from my experience at least.
I never noticed it panning or scanning at any given time.
