View Full Version : Formatting the G3
Hi guys,
I did a chkdsk on my G3 in winXP & it reported to have found errors. I then proceeded to correct it in chkdsk with /f.
After that, just to be sure i formatted my G3 in jetshell under FATS32..
Now after formatting when i go to use chkdsk on it again, it reports that there are some errors with the G3 again.
btw, the format screen in jetshell is similar to the one that popsup whtn i do a Right-Click->format.. is it the same?
Is it that the default Formatting in JetShell is incompatible with default Windows Chkdsk structure?
Conclusion : A freshly formatted (using Jetshell FAT32) G3, AFTER a player reboot, would be detected with problems under Chkdsk. btw, tested using Firmware 1.3
CAn anyone try it out & let me know their results about this too? Or is it my hardware defect..?
Someone please help.. Thanks
After firmware upgrade i always ger errors and i have to fix it with scandisk . Get errors on my I4 too.
Now i scan my players every time i have them connected to PC .
Hi Brutus,
Thanks for sharing your experience, i hope its not a hardware chip defect on my player..
btw, do you get errors when playing if you do not scan & repair the player?
Because actually the player works fine for me even with the presence of errors in chkdsk, i am just afraid it is a hardware defect..
Anyone else encountered the above?
Do a chkdsk in command prompt right after a Format + Player Reboot..please also state the version of the firmware u using.. Chkdsk report any errors?
Please Share..
Thanks

I just ran a CHKDSK after upgrading to new firmware and I get:
Microsoft Windows XP [Version 5.1.2600]
(C) Copyright 1985-2001 Microsoft Corp.
C:\>chkdsk f:
The type of the file system is FAT32.
Volume IAUDIO created 07/07/2005 17:56
Windows is verifying files and folders...
Windows found errors on the disk, but will not fix them
because disk checking was run without the /F (fix) parameter.
\SYSTEM Errors in . and/or .. corrected.
\MUSIC Errors in . and/or .. corrected.
\RECORDS Errors in . and/or .. corrected.
File and folder verification is complete.
Windows found problems with the file system.
Run CHKDSK with the /F (fix) option to correct these.
1,038,516,224 bytes total disk space.
4,096 bytes in 1 hidden files.
225,280 bytes in 50 folders.
952,836,096 bytes in 653 files.
85,446,656 bytes available on disk.
4,096 bytes in each allocation unit.
253,544 total allocation units on disk.
20,861 allocation units available on disk.
Note that the errors are all/only in the 'parent' entries for the 3 folders which the G3 has automatically created at poweron time (and apparently done a cr&p job with). If I fix these using /f parameter, and re-check, all is now fixed. if I power on the G3 it works fine, and it doesn't screw them up again (this is with 1.30 firware), although I had not added or deleted and files or folders.
If you find errors elsewhere, or if the errors don't stay fixed after a chkdsk with /f parameter, then I'd format the player. If the errors persist after that, then I'd think about returning it. However if you just get errors in those three folders, which go away and stay away when 'fixed', I'd put it down to some sloppy firmware which creates them.
Hi GSV3MiaC,
Thanks for helping out! i will follow what you say later.. but before that i have another question to clarify:
I supposed you bought the 1 Gb model as well, but my total disk space is only
Mine =1,038,368,768 bytes total disk space
whereas yours = 1,038,516,224 bytes total disk space.
Mine has a few hundred bytes missing, i thought the factory would have these standarized.
Now, im thinking it maybe part of my flash chip is damaged, im afraid it will spread to the other areas in time to come. What do you think?
Can anyone else with a 1GB G3 do a 'chkdsk' for me & post their total disk space avail. too?
Thanks alot

Yours actually has 36 clusters (of 4k each) missing. You may be right, and those are bad areas of the chip which the firmware has heiiden from Windows .. unless there are some other files which can vary in size and which are hidden.
Even my number is nowhere close to 1GB (whcih is the size the flash chip should actually be), but the difference is what the firmware itself uses. Remember Windoze onlt 'thinks' it is seeing a disk.
