Is there anyway to format the S9 without screwing it up? I have a old iAudio X5, which needed software which would do it, is there anything available like that for the S9?

Page 40 of the Cowon S9 manual...
Connect your S9 to your computer and Format as FAT32 File System...
AFAIK, the same applies to the iAudio X5.

I thought I read in another thread that if you format through windows you lose the drivers and the player won't start up, things like that?

I would assume that Cowon knows what their talking about...
Why do you need to format your S9???
You could try the Panasonic SDFormatter (http://panasonic.jp/support/global/cs/sd/download/sd_formatter.html) tool if you trust them more. I have not tried it on an S9, so use it at your own risk.
Please post a link to that thread you mentioned...
EDIT: If you just want to reset everything to the factory defaults, just delete the param.cfg file in the system folder...
