View Full Version : i dont understand capacitive
everywhere where i read, it says you need finger contact to trigger it and i have to press hard with my knuckles to even think about affecting it...but we must blow an electrical current or store a bit of electricity in our saliva because the s9 will react to blowing...how is this possible? any scientists out there?

Capacitive means there's a coating of static-sensitive metal under a glass screen. When your finger touches it, the metal collects near your finger causing a voltage drop, registered by the player. That's the basics, so your breath must carry some of your body's static through the moisture. I may be wrong about that, but it's my theory.

Have been blowing at my S9 for an hour now and can't even get a response. :P
Maybe it is firmware related? [confused]

Blowing won't be much help unless you get your face very close to the screen. Here's some info (http://www.planetanalog.com/features/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=181401898)on capacitive touch. Tapping with a fingernail won't work. If you're all claws they'll get in the way. If you have heavily calloused fingers it won't work as well. You also need decent circulation in your hand/fingers. If any of the above is true then capacitive touchscreens aren't for you. You should consider the iRiver SPINN, perhaps.
hmm i dont have to be that close...2 to 4 inches?...just needs to be a nice firm puff...i discovered this while trying to blow some dust off

Your nearly there tom it total principle of capacitive display is capacitance.
First you have to understand human bodies have the ability to store electrons.
The next thing you have to understand is our humble friend the capacitor good old he’s in lost[yes]. The capacitor is firstly a passive coupling device that is able to store an electrical charge. Just like are human bodies. The Capacitor achieves this by have two plates insulated with a dielectric (insulator) made from air, paper, and ionic crystals or ferromagnetic materials. So when you put a potential difference (voltage EMF) over the plates of a capacitor it then has the ability to store energy.
In case of capacitive touch device the screen (glass cover) it has been coated with a indium tin oxide which gives the ability to conduct. A continues electrical charge is stored over the x/y touch screen sensors which exhibits capacitance. Therefore it a prissily con trolled electrical felid. Which work in x/y configuration because they are proximity based. When you finger comes in contact with the display. Your body starts to store electrons form the feed from the display, the controller is able to detect this along the x/y axis and is then able because of proximity able to detect were you finger is.
So in reality it works by detecting a voltage drop on the calibrated line feeds but it because of capacitance that the display works. And they also do not need to be directly touched to work as with you berating on it just replace the finger with air from the paragraph from above.
The first memories I have captive display is when they were used crt’s I always remember having a sore finger after because they were very unresponsive. Also I remember having a lot fun in school with unvented electrolytic capacitors. Our teacher would let use connect them up wrong and well… they would go BOOM. You should have seen the size of some of them; they were just like the size soft drink cans.[excited]

I think Bdrok is mocking us, look the date.
haha surprisingly not...ok maybe not 4...but 1.5-2 inches

LMAO!! [rofl]
Maybe they implemented "hands-free-touch-screen-operation" in one of the new firmwares :P
but it is pretty interesting that that would actually work.. and why lol

actually... if i remember correctly, I THINK capacitative screens do not need direct contact. You just have to be slightly above the screen and you can use it... i've tried that a couple of times on the S9 (although it had all miserably failed), but perhaps maybe its your lips that's doing the job? I have no clue.
It's weird considering the fact that blowing on it activates the screen. It reminds me of someone shooting an electrical beam out of their mouth.

Say goodbye to the fingerprints
its not super-reactive as if you are touching it, but you can even do it directionally to scroll through the browser, but often it just activates something...i started a game once...am i the only one that gets a response? because its not all that hard...you do have to concentrate the air...like you are blowing up an air mattress
i tried a little while ago and it didnt work...maybe you have to have some built up static or something idk
My screen responds to blowing as well. I was also blowing dust, and my screen was responding. It also responds to the leather cowon case. I always have to lock the screen now, or the case pressing the onscreen volume control (Curve S UCI).

Probably not a good idea to blow dust :P
BTW how exactly do u blow dust? open up your computer take some out and put it in your much and blow it out? [rofl]
clever
however he is still grammatically correct

Just be glad that the S9 has a better capacitive touch screen than the Samsung P3 (according to the reviews) in which the P3 will acknowledge a touch but not do anything with it until you tap it again.

The P3, if it's like the P2, takes two taps in most menus. The first simply selects an item. The second assures the P2/P3 you wanted to open it. It keeps items from accidently being opened when only swiping the list. It bothers me as well.

But sometimes it takes more than 2 tries as the touch will be acknowledged just in the wrong spot.
