View Full Version : Any Sense that we'll get MP4 capability?

I would like at the very least the ability to play MP4 vids on the S9, any sense that Cowon will add this in the future?

Ramzii

Dont know, think they let it out for a reason.
Im guessing a financial reason, makes sense cuz they didnt incorporate x264 & mkv support.

Who knows, maybe a future update will make us all happy?

03-27-2009, 20:28
no...it is unlikely that companies add support for new formats in firmware...you usually see improved capability for formats, but rarely new ones (though not never... ie..sansa clip added flac at one pt.)

and didn't cowon just add... uh.. wmv?

well, no.. they improved some WMV codecs.
wmv always was supported along with divx/xvid.

I would like at the very least the ability to play MP4 vids on the S9Funny, I just removed this .mp4 movie from my S9, a real bummer it didnt work.
I actually forgot it was .mp4 and just wasted 20 minutes placing/removing the 1,4 gb movie.. :')

daver
03-27-2009, 23:39
isn't MP4 similar to Xvid? i may be way off base here, but it was my understanding that MP4 and AVI are essentially containers, and that within these containers you could effectively use the same compression algorithms/techniques/whatever...

if my understanding is correct (fingers crossed), then MP4 shouldn't be too hard to include in a firmware update?

Psst..

MP4 is only a container, not a video codec.
so is MKV

H.264 is what we should be wanting...

Psst..

MP4 is only a container, not a video codec.
right, that's what i meant, codec. i can't believe i forgot the term

even still, if MP4 is a container that can have the same codecs as an AVI, then why not support MP4?

so is MKV

H.264 is what we should be wanting...
i agree, MKV should definitely be included. as soon as i get my S9 (i'm patient enough for a solid "yes it's here" or "no, we're not making one" from Cowon), i'll be sure to voice my complaints (if it's not supported by then).

Well first off it has been in the specification were reassessed for the S9 it did say that it would play H.264. cowon will implement, but when who knows.

Anyway my opinion doesn’t matter has I have hard evidence, just open up the s9 raw binaries (firmware) and you will clearly see as plane as day strings with H.264 in it lord knows its 500mhz dual soc can cope with it.

Is That enough evidences for you its coming guys we will just have to wait. [thumbdwn]

Anyway if your interested use you favoured text viewer or hex editor

I used Winhex and used it's tool to dump all strings in one handy text file.

I think Winhex offers a trail if not there always Vim

Theirs also mp4 strings[yes]

I carn't remember the offset

Is That enough evidences for you
yes :D

its coming guys we will just have to wait.
that's all we have to do, wait

and wait, and wait. kind of like waiting for the 32GB version.

i'll just keep dreaming that when the 32gb version comes out, Cowon will release firmware 2.11 with MP4 and limited H.264 support. of course, later firmwares will have better H.264 support (i can dream, can't i?)

I don’t see any other reason for have the strings in there. I haven’t seen them in the d2 firmware.

I just hope that it not just the left over’s of cowon’s implementation of the nebular OS

Dose anybody know how many other cowon devices use the Nebular RTOS ?

I don't care about the lack of h.264-support. I think Cowon works on it.

I would of preferred a Linux os rather than a nucleus os[thumbdwn]

So I diced to look though latest beta that cowon issued here my findings

Wireless Solution : Bluetooth, WiFi
Interesting strings that I found" ...web stuff maybe over BlutoothWhy not WiFi? We know there is Bluetooth and FM support in the S9. Many FM/bluetooth chips also have WiFi on them. Anyone cracked open an S9 to identify all the chips?

The reason I believe there might be that potential in there is that on one of the Korean sites with assorted themes displayed, I saw an "appstore" app on one. The girl pictured in the background looks like she could have been modelling for Cowon during early S9 development when the S9 was still a prototype. Icons aren't very far developed.

There was this

http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=24903

but the pics are well gone now

They showed a crude shot of the s9 motherboard show the codec chip.

That was the only pic of its guts that I saw.

You quite right about have multiple radios on one chip. You might be on to something there as I have seen something that I think is referring to a access point.

But I can’t believe that cowon would waste money on a chip with something they would not implement.

But you right as of yet we have not seen the

SOC (cpu) (TCC 7901 but which vertion)
Bluetooth Chip
Radio Chip
Accelerometer Chip
Power Management Chip
Tv scalar (might be on soc)
OLED Driver
SD Ram

There is still a lot of secrets left to discover until we have better (or any) pics of the s9 internals we will simply not know.

So dose any one have any pics of the s9 internals ?

Its all speculation till we know otherwise

but we are getting somewere at least.

Thats them

lovley very good quilty pcb, full of SMD

The codec chip is that BGA chip in the right hand corner with WM on it.

The chip is manufactured by wolfson microelectronics who make the best DAC/CODEC (well in my opinion) the suited here in the United kingdom. One of dragons form dragons den hold a stake in that business I think it the short Australian one.

The other picture is of a rf shield presumably for the radio chips.

Cheers Tabv.

Other than that there’s not much else to say expert for the hell of alto of coupling devices, and those SMD diodes are HUGE!

its beautiful plane and simple

any other pics ?

There be 2 different motherboards...One has an A on it and the other has a B...With and without DMB Module...What's up here?

How many Motherboards are in the S9; 3?

These yours? Because it is a shame you opened up your S9 and did not record the chip numbers...

Fist off tom you braver than me please be very careful it would such a same to waste a device like this.

As for high resultion pics you would be better scanning them much better results (so I hear) never tried it my self so meh.

Anyway great pics mini did you take them ? Were did you find them ? Maybe you or they have better ones.

But I was still able to make educated gues's about them so here I go

Pic One

Not Much here just the shield and the battery it quite small though compared to the d2 battery.

Pic Two

In the top right and corner is the NAND Flash can't see any makings I hope this dose not mean it cheap. Bottom left hand corner is the codec chip (used to change pcm into sound it other use is take the line in as well) its a wolfson chip. The chip by the microphone (small black gold thing) is probably a Philips pmu which is also the chip used to control the touch screen and power. There is also a small chip right a the bottom smallest looks like it the fm chip.

Pic Three

The Big Chip is The SOC (System On A Chip) which basicly a cpu with added extras. The chip next to it the hynix ram (how much I don't know defently 64MB or 32MB). d2 has 32 megs

Pic Four

This is almost certainly the radio card what with that fractal antenna. The chip I carn't make out the chip in the middle of it but it dose look like a bluetooth controller.

Pic Five and Six show the difference between the DMB model and the one without.

I have not seen a pic of the oled screen which is were I think its controller is kept.

Also I can't see the missing trace from the other set of pictures

I have not had any experience with Accelerometer's can anybody see it?

Anyway thats my 2 cents

without better pictures that's all I can see oh and maybe wrong with some of my guess

what do you guy's see.

Looks like more research is need into arm ops

So here we go

Arm instruction set

registers

1 dedicated program counter
1 dedicated current program status register
5 saved program status registers
30 general purpose registers

arranged into 7 banks

Modes

user (unprivileged mode most task run as)
FIQ (entered when a high priority interrupt is raised)
IRQ (Normal Interrupt is raised)
Supervisor (reset on irq instruction is executed)
abort (memory access violations)
Undef (undefined instructions)
system (privileged mode same registers as user mode)

I have a good guide to arm assembler now for the dissembler.

It quite a elegant system

anybody know arm entery piont is diffrent from arm 9/11

Since you guys like hearing about the S9 guts here is what I know about AMOLED.

The oled screen that the s9 uses a amloed screen. Amoled screen refers to the way each pixle is addressed and can be compared to a similar technology call tft (thin film transistor) not thin front television like those silly shopping channels say.

A active matrix display is a oled display that has had its pixels arranged to make a single pixle. Meaning each has 3 pixel to make one i.e. RGB. The tft circuit controls the amount of current to the display to dictate how to brightly to shine.

The control of the current is controlled by (typically) two tft circuits. One to control the charging of a storage capacitor and the other to control the line voltage to the oled it self.

The pixel matrix is as follows

layer 1 Anode
layer 2 Organic
layer 3 cathode
layer 4 control bus circuit

AMOLED are the pest for portable devices because of there low power usage. But they must be handle correctly. You have properly seen a oled screen that bends, well that is also AMOLED but you must not bend it with a radius small than the bus circuit or you will see a intermittent line appearer on the display showing the broken bus lines.

But remember they are considered to the strongest type of oled displays.

OLED Layers

1.cathode
2.Emissive
3.Emission
4.Conductive Layer
5.Anode

As for the oled it self it much like a led.

The oled is composed of 5 layers emissive, conductive, substrate, anode, cathode. They are made of organic molecules that can conduct electricity which can range from insulators to conductive, so they are considered organic semiconductors.

A potential difference is applied to the anode such that the with respect to the cathode. This cause a electro motive force (EMF) to flow between the cathode and the anode. Hence this means the cathode gives electrons to the emissive layer and the anode takes conductive layer. This means that the anode gives electron holes to the conductive layer.

This will soon become negativity charged while the conductive layer becomes rich in positively charged. The electrostatic force will bring the electrons to the holes and they will recombine. This happens in the emissive area because organic semiconductors holes are more mobile than electrons. The recombining of the electrons and there holes causes a drop in the energy of the electrons accompanied by a emission of radiation whose frequency is in the visible light spectrum.

It's got bluetooth so they've already been through the FCC.

I'm noticing many review sites have stopped comparing these touchscreen players to the iItch, and are instead comparing it to the NoNo which sells at the same price points. What we've known all along it that almost any player out there with a 2" screen or larger is more feature packed and a better value. It's about time the press figured this out.

"7 de setembro" is not Spanish or German, it's Portuguese for "September 7th". that's the date of the Brazilian Independence from Portugal. maybe that info is used by the player's calendar....(?) it's unlikely this is a mere coincidence, given that the string appear in the very language in which the holiday is celebrated.

too bloody much sorry about that did not think

7 sep is also the day london was attacked by terrorists

i just did some more research.... both 25 de Abril and 7 de Setembro are strings written in Portuguese.

- 25 de Abril: Carnation Revolution.
A coup that started in Lisbon on April 25, 1974
and changed the Portuguese regime from an
authoritarian dictatorship to a democracy.

- 7 de Setembro: Brazilian Independence Day.
Brazil declared independence from Portugal on
September 7th, 1822.

again, those dates are written in Portuguese and, therefore, should be taken in the context of Portuguese-spoken nations. it's unlikely that a Korean company writing a firmware in English would use the Portuguese language to refer to events that took place in England.

the usefulness of those dates for the S9, however, remains a mystery....

Wasn't that the 7th of July [2005].

I am a little bit concerned about this thread, we really really really seem to have managed to go awfully off topic. I'm not a big fan of closing threads [please don't make me do so]. I'd like to split the topic up into another thread....i'm not quite sure what to title it as though :P

yer split up mate as for a name how about adventures inside the s9 (ok so i borrowed it from bunnie).

nordloewelabs
04-20-2009, 10:11
the whole thread is about S9's firmware. the first part, however, is more H264-centric.

xenarchi
04-20-2009, 11:11
Maybe we can get a Mod to split this thread. The second part of this is great stuff and might be better served as a new one.

yes please.

Mr. Black

yes please.

If you wanted to recommend something to the staff you should have contacted us, don't expect anything whatsoever to be done with "in thread" requests as they can easily be over looked or forgotten

oh well
