View Full Version : Still no third-party silicone case - is the O2 abandonded?
At this time, someone should have put out a silicone case for the O2. Looking at the ultimate - zCover (http://www.zcover.com)- they haven't done anything for Cowon since the Q5.
Looking on eBay, there's a slew of generic screen protectors, and a couple of leather cases.
I'm still using my O2 to watch .avi/.srt files on my hdtv, but I need a silicone case. The clear hard plastic case by Cowon is being held together by scotch tape, and even that's getting tough.
Anyone found any type of silicone case?
I havent heard of anything. Have you tried emailing companies to see if anything is in the works?
I've emailed zCover twice, with no results. I think I got a generic 'thanks for inquiring, we'll let you know if we do something' kind of reply.
I keep checking eBay and zCover, but nothing yet. I think no one's making a cover because they don't think they'll sell enough pieces.
Boo-hoo [sad]
Do yourself a favour and get the leather case keal. The O2 isn't really suited for silicone cases due to it's size and recessed screen......note that there aren't exactly a plethora of silicone cases for archos and larger iriver devices. I used to use silicone too, but as you upgrade from cheap music players to fully featured pmp's you have to upgrade your accessory choices as well.
Leather is not much of an option for me, as my players tend to be surrounded by sweat and moisture. The leather gets mushy and moldy over time.
zCover made a silicone case for Cowon's Q5W, which is larger than the O2. That was their last case, and they haven't made one for the O2 or the S9. The S9 has a generic silicone case that I've seen on eBay, so I'm hoping an O2 case will spring up sooner or later :)
I guess thats just one of the tough things with going with a Cowon vs ipod. There just isnt nearly the market because Cowon is such a smaller company.

I use my O2 in the bathroom, the leather will only get mushy and moldy after a year or two. In two years I doubt it will matter anymore because I will probably have a new device or case. I can count on my fingers (maybe even of one hand) the number of PMP's with 4.1"+ screens that have silicone cases.
I dont know how interested you would be keal, but Zagg makes a protective skin for the Q5 you could cut down to size. They just came out with one for the s9, not sure if the o2 is coming out. I have the same one on my G1 phone, and I love it. It may not be a silicone skin, put it will protect the screen and the player from getting roughed up.
I simply went to a local tailoring lady and had her custom make a case.
It is made of soft doeskin type leather, with a suede lining.
I was originally intending to have it made from velvet, but she showed me some off cuts of fabrics she had.
The case is long, the same shape as the O2, but just a bit longer to also take the earphone cable .
The fold over top has a velcro tab (so somewhat adjustable too).
It looks professional and cost $30.
If you buy the material/fabric, you local alterations tailor can sew it up for you, any design you choose.
I had mine back the same day, as it only takes a few minutes to sew up on a machine.

wonder if this would fit?

obviously custom holes would have to be cut though...

If anyone tries one, it would be great to see if it fits. I could use a dash mounted player. Would save the hand holding in the car. Also would allow me two hands on the wheel!
Great find.
I want a rubber case too. Like skin, they're not slippy and allow pretty severe droppings. Silicon is a pretty resilient material too.

I think apart from the holes not being in the right places (obviously), this would be perfect;

Yeah, it's a Garmin Nuvi Silicon case.
I think I may buy one just to try it, actually.
Its only a fiver.
When it arrives I'll post pics (especially if I have to make any modifications etc.)

I like the Cowon Leather case so much I've gotten them for all my devices with the A3 being the latest its in the mail, the one for the o2 is nice it holds the unit securely, covers the screen nicely, but still shows off the device.
I found a very good compromise for a belt clip case for the O2. It is available at BassPro Shops - for those that live in America... It is called the Nite-IzeŽ Clip Case™ Cargo with Hook 'n' Loop Closure
Anyway, it is a great device holder. It holds the O2 securely and it will not slip out! The closure for the flap is hook and loop, so no accidental opening by brushing up against someone, or that laptop case.
It has extra storage for additional cards, say up to 4 or more SDHC. It can be clipped to your belt for secure holding. If you have used a Nite-Ize cell phone case before, this is one of their more secure clips. You can also mount it on your belt by putting the belt through the case horizontally. This one does not rotate on your clip (at least the one I have) . That's okay, because the device hangs good in the case.
Here's a pic of the standard model either small, medium or large:

From their website, the clip is a 360 degree rotating one, but I don't have this clip.

The above clip is only on the Small and Medium model. It does not mention that on the website, but trust me. I looked. The one on the large model is smaller, but doesn't rotate 360 degrees. I tend to like the clip better since it is smaller.
Also, the case I have is not the wide model, but it is the large model. The wide may fit without squeezing the player as much as the one i have, but I'm happy now that I can put my O2 on my hip.
Here's a shot of the wide model:

I may not like the wide model since it is visibly huge. I don't necessarily need that one. Check out others at the site click here (http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/SearchResults?searchOption=products&hvarSearchString=Nite-ize&x=17&y=12&storeId=10151&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&CMID=TOP_SEARCH_GO).

Well, it arrived a while ago and I've just got round to trying it.
Sadly the centimeter or two difference in width between the O2 and the Garmin Nuvi means that if you stretch the silicone cover to fit the O2, it ripples at the top and bottom so doesn't look very good.
What I have ended up doing is cutting the middle joining bit of silicone off with scissors, and making holes for the power switch and SD/USB with scissors.
Obviously, there are a couple of disadvantages - the cover is not a "complete" cover for the O2, and never will be. It has holes in various places, designed for the buttons/slots on the Garmin sat nav. If you make your own holes, you are weakening it slightly.
This means as a Cowon O2 cover alone, the Garmin Nuvi covers are useless.
However, for me it is perfect as I use it in conjunction with my official Cowon leather case.
I love the leather case, but it does not protect the corners at all. So now I have put the two separate halves of the Garmin Nuvi silicone cover on my O2, then the corner-protected-by-silicone O2 inside the leather case =)
This works a treat, and as I have cut holes to suit the bitsnbobs it is still fully functional and convenient. In fact I have put my spare 32GB SD card between the back of my O2 and one of the silicone halves meaning I now have a handy storage place ;-)
Bottom line, don't buy a Sat Nav silicone cover and expect it to be suitable for the O2... Do buy one if you want something you can modify and use in conjunction with some other kind of case. Especially if, like me, you dislike the lack of corner protection.
I shall update this post with photos when I find my camera ><

P.S - The eBay seller I bought the Garmin Nuvi silicone case from (i-nique) have a website where they sell all sorts of covers/cases: http://www.i-nique.com/
I figured since they have a lot of Cowon cases there already, including a leather O2 one, they might do a silicone one for the O2.
I have emailed them to ask, hopefully I'll get a response =)
