View Full Version : Guide for using Iriverter to convert video formats

This is a guide of the easiest way I know to convert both DVD's and movies already on your computer to the proper format for the X5 Series Players made by Cowon.

So many people are asking questions about how to make video work on the X5 Series of players, so I decided to make one tutorial that will answer all questions (hopefully). This is very simple, so no one worry about technicality before you give it a try

First, download Iriverter from http://iriverter.sourceforge.net
(This is Version .14 and some people have problems installing)

For version .13r1, go here

http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/iriverter/iriverter-0.13r1_win.exe?download

This program will convert:
- AVI Video
- Matroska Video
- MPEG Video
- Ogg Video
- Quicktime Movies
- Real Video (with extra codecs)
- Windows Media Video

Go to the menu on the right, locate "Download" in the menu, and choose the right file for your OS (Windows, Mac, etc) Then pick a mirror to download the file from, choose any one.

After Iriverter is downloaded, install it by double clicking the installer and following instructions.

Afer installed, it will look like a white box with a blue border on top, it does not have an icon to make it look any different from your average file.

Double click that blue and white box and open Iriverter.

Before you start, go to the Options menu in the middle on the top of the program. Change your device to the iAudio X5 and then go to framerate.

Now you can choose whatever framerate you want but I would reccommend dragging the bar until it say "14 kbps"

This is 14 fps and the preferred framerate for viewing movies on the X5. Some prefer 12 fps, but you can experiment to find your likings.

You may also want to choose to normalize the Volume from the menu, this will make the sound consistently loud.

Now, there are 3 ways to choose what you want Iriverter to convert, so I will make three different mini-tutorials explaining those 3 steps.

They are converting a single video, converting a directory, and converting a DVD.

The instructions for each method will be explained and then at the end of this, the final steps for putting it on your video on your X5 will be told.

Converting a Single Video

Choose to "Convert a single Video" from the graphic menu on the top, it is the second icon from the left. You will be given two options-where the video is located, and where you want it to go. Browse your computer to find the video and browse to choose where you want it.

Then click either the first icon from the left on the top or go to "Jobs>convert"

Your movie will begin conversion and let you know about how long it will take to complete the job. When it's finished, it will say complete and your video is converted.

Click close under the progress bar.

Then, where it says your input and output, look in the top right of that little box and click the white "X". This will make it so it does not convert the same file again on your next project.

Note: With this method, after setting one video up for conversion, you can get others by choosing to convert another single video, etc. and then when you convert, it will convert all of the projects you have prepared.

Converting a Directory

Choose the Icon third from right which looks like a folder and click on it.
A box will appear and give you two neccessary fields to fill in. Input-Where the file is on your computer. And Output-Where you want the converted files to end up.

Browse through your computer and choose those two locations.
You are now ready to convert.

Click either the first icon from the left on the top or go to "Jobs>convert"

Your folder will begin conversion and let you know about how long it will take to complete the job (Time is shown per movie, not by the entire folder itself).

When it's finished, it will say complete and your video is converted.
Click close under the progress bar. Then, where it says your input and output, look in the top right of that little box and click the white "X". This will make it so it does not convert the same file again on your next project.

Note: With this method, after setting one folder up for conversion, you can get others by choosing to convert another folder, etc. and then when you convert, it will convert all of the projects you have prepared.

From DVD

In Iriverter choose the farthest icon on the right, the one that looks like a DVD.

You will have many fields needed to be filled in before you can begin.

Under DVD Drive choose the drive your DVD player is.

Under Title, it will either already show the title of the DVD, or you will type it in.

To choose what in the DVD you want, click chapters and choose the parts you need, this is helpful when the DVD has unneeded extra features, etc.

Under Audio Stream choose your preferred spoken language for the DVD. If nothing appears, the DVD will be in it's default language.

The same rules as above apply to subtitles. If you don't want any, leave it black, but if there's a drop down menu and you see a language you want displayed as subtitles, choose it.

Finally, choose where you want the competed X5 file of the DVD to end up under "Output".
Browse your computer and select the folder you wish it

And finally, before you convert you may want to make sure you have a couple gigabytes free on your hard drive just in case it needs that much storage at some point in the conversion.

It will give you an estimated total time and convert. When it is finished your finished file will be in the folder you assigned it to end up (Output).

Notes for all: Different types of projects can all be done at the same time. After setting up one project, set another one up by following the same steps. After choosing all of your projects, begin conversion.

Important Note: Occasionally there is an error with Iriverter called "mencoder.exe" The file which caused it to error is for some reason not liked by Iriverter. This problem is almost always solved with a simple restart, but without a restart, the majority of videos will continue to be converted succesfully, but the one which cause the error will fail to be converted.

Final steps

Locate your converted files and after connecting your X5 to your computer, expand the drive your X5 is in "My Computer" and Go to the folder called "MOVIE"

Drag and drop (or copy and paste) the files which you have converted and want on your X5 into that folder.

Then, congratulations! Your work has paid off and you can enjoy watching your new movies on your X5.

Thanks to "BlackFlag79" for some help with directories.

Nice one. :) Doesn't sound too hard, always great to have a guide though. Can't wait to try encode some family guy and such. Anyone know if the screen is big enough to read subtitles? I have some old Zatoichi episodes and other japanese movies I'd like to encode. Just wondering......

Interesting, I've never heard of that before. Try restarting and trying the file over. Iriverter isn't exactly stable, so doing a restart could fix everything.

converting video uses a lot of resources. check your performance in windows xp when converting one video, thats why u should only convert one at a time.

My iriverter doesn't start when I click the icon after installation. It just looks like nothing has happened.

Anybody had the same problem? I'm using windows xp.

iriverter works fine at the PC (with windows 2k) in my workplace but I have all my videos at home. :(

I'm having the exact same problem!! I installed it correctly, using both the installer and the zip way. Both times failed. Also tried using the program in Safe Mode, but the same thing happened. I have the task manager open when I try to open it, and I see that the application runs for less than a second, then it just closes out for no reason. How can I get it to work? I've tried installing/re-installing/deleting/restarting/safe mode. What more can I do?

Hi,

I still have no success in figuring out what went wrong. However, surprisingly, verson 0.13 works fine for me.

You may download iriverter-0.13r1_win.exe at:
http://sf.gds.tuwien.ac.at/i/ir/iriverter/
and see if it works for you too.

Good luck!

Nice guide Brad

It made me chuckle when I saw the new icon for iRiverter 0.14 was of the X5 :D

p.s - You also need extra codecs for it to convert from QuickTime.

Do you guys think I should submit this as an article for iaudiophile? It's different then the other converting guide. I found that one much more complicated.

What do you think?

this should be a useful guide when i start transferring files (i've just got mine today and am charging it up. before i do anything i'm reading this forum and see wot i need to do) thanks for the write up!

one question tho... doesn't jetaudio convert it anyways? why do i use iriverter instead?

actually... is there actually a n00b guide for an x5? i wish there was...

i guess i'll be here a lot from today ;). thanks in advance to anyone who's gonna help me out... i'm the Lord Farkward from motomodders.net, and for those who help me out, feel free to shoot me a PM if u need anyhelp that motomodders can offer :D

07-25-2005, 11:33
A/V synching? lol u already lost me there...

hmm... any recommended read for n00bs like me? i'm unfamiliar with pretty much everything... this is actually my first mp3 player EVER... before this i've been using my good ol'MD player up till now :)

i wish there was some sort of a n00b guide for the x5 users... just like the n00b guide for the v3 users that i wrote ;)

Is there any reason I'd want to use iRiverter over the Jet Audio Video Converter? I've already used Jet Audio, and I found it extremely straight-forward and easy to use. I've only done a couple of Family Guy episodes, but they've turned out really well. Is iRiverter going to be better quality?

Sorry for the dumb question, but I only got my X5 30gb this afternoon.

iaudio_brad
07-27-2005, 14:39
I had the same problem with 1 download of iriverter.

Note to Spasm: With Iriverter you can go directly from a DVD to your X5 in one step. That, among other things is what Iriverter can do that Jet Audio can't.

Edit: Go to top of thread and use second link for version .13r1

Hi iaudio_brad, i'm new to iaudio but your posting really help me alot. really thank but is there any other converter beside the 0.13/0.14? bcoz after i press the convert, XP will create a error report but the file have already been converted. then i upload it to the movie folder and try to play but it fail... is there any solution or any other software u recommend? Thanks!

iaudio_brad
08-09-2005, 10:51
Your problem is probably because of the video you are converting. Iriverter "doesnt like" certain videos and will consistently have problems converting them. try a restart and try converting other videos. The problem you are encountering is probably the most common problem with iriverter.

You could use the standard Jetaudio converter if this problem isn't fixed.

That software should be on your installation disc that came with your x5.

Should i be able to see the video playing on my PC or does it only play on the X5? When i do try and play it, after converting successfully, it says parts of the video can't be played because of codec errors or something.

BTW: I'm Running XP Sp2.

You think it could have been coz i downloaded the program from sumwhere else?

Anyone using iriverter on Suse Linux? I get a problem while compiling, it asks for javac to be in PATH (JAVAC not in PATH) but javac is obviously in the PATH. I also did a PATH=$PATH:/usr/lib/java/bin/ in the terminal, but without result. Could someone just make an rpm please? Or help me with the compiling...

Works great for AVI files for me (0.14 - 0.13 goes nuts on my machine), but whenever I try converting a WMV, I get problems in the output. The sound is fine, but only one frame per 3 seconds or so is displayed. Which is a pain.

Any ideas?

Ok, Iriverter doesn't seem to like ripping my dvd's directly using that mode. No problem, I ripped the dvd's to my hdd using dvd decrypter. Then I successfully used Iriverter to convert the resulting vob's to avi's for the X5, except the audio stream it chooses seems random -- for some it uses the right one and others I get like the commentary track. I know its because I ripped the vob's w/ both (I like keeping them on my hdd and being able to switch between the various audio tracks using PowerDVD), but I should be able to select the audio track in Iriverter in file mode when it detects you're opening something (basically ripped vob files) w/ multiple audio streams. (No, it doesn't work even if I go in DVD mode but then go to "Other.." and try to navigate to the vob's on my hdd.) HELP!

@billo did you convert your file to .avi?

heres what i did:

it found the DVD drive, and showed all the movies on it

selected the DVD "movie" file (you can tell because the length is the same to the length on the back of the dvd holder).

Set 14fbps, set audio to 1-english, set output to my documents, set filename as "Spiderman 2.avi" and converted.

Then dragged it into X5 MOVIES folder. It worked for me. It gets a little choppy at points, but its fine.

I don't know if you guys have seen it or not but the creator has found the bug for everyone who is having problems using version .14 in windows XP.

Direct from the site:
"A lot of people have been telling me that iriverter simply doesn't run on their computers. I have traced this down to an issue with iriverter on Windows XP. To workaround this, go to C:\Program Files\iriverter\, right click on iriverter.exe, and go over to the compatiblity tab. Enable Windows 2000 compatiblity and apply. iriverter should run fine then.

Now that I have identified the problem, I will work on releasing a new version with a proper fix in the next few days."

I just tried it becuase I couldn't get .14 working for me before. Now it's just fine. I am loving .14 over .13....ALOT more options IMO, also audio bitrate goes upto 192kpbs!!! Yay!

I have a question using Iriverter. Just got my x5 (love it), now trying to convert some videos, I read the stickies. I have my framerates at 14fps and enabled "pan and scan" because it is widescreen. But after it analyzes the video.....17 chapters show up. I just want the movie and nothing else, no menus, no extra features.

How do I know which chapter is which part of the disk? Windows media locates about 17 sections (count of monte cristo btw)...whereas Iriverter finds 30 when I click on the "chapter" button!!

I just want the movie and nothing else.....how do I do this?
Appreciate your help in pointing me in the correct direction.

I've just done one movie so this answer might not be accurate. When that screen showed up I choose the one that matched the running time of the movie. Then a second screen showed up with the chapters. At the second screen I had the choice of letting Iriverter work by chapter or combine all the chapters into one BIG file. I chose the BIG file and an hour or so later had my movie ready to move over to the X5.

One of the submenus under settings lets you remove the status bar from the X5 screen That's the stuff at both the top and bottom. Since I also have a remote I still have the info on the remote and a lot cleaner display on the X5 for movie watching.

I did Iriverter with the movie....and just decoded it without too much tweaking from me. I got 1 complete movie (250mb roughly) and then the same movie broken up into 3 parts. I put the large file in the movie folder and viola...perfect!!

The only thing is is the sides of the widescreen format is cut off...not too big of a deal. I have (and will more tomorrow) read the forums for answers for this. I may try the LONG version posted in the sticky which uses 5 different programs. The DvD encrypter...or something like that is another link not working in that list, but I will try something! It is really fun.

Really appreciate everyone's helpful input, thank you.

Try running mencoder on it's own. It requires a bit more commandline parameters (iRiverter is supposed to hide this from the user). Most likely you are missing a codec for decoding the incoming stream (audio or video) or encoding the outgoing stream. Check my Linux conversion topic in this forum for some hints on a commandline and also online for some more information on the Windows version of mencoder.

I havent found an answer or solution to this, but has anyone figured out how to convert the Ipod vid files to something useable for the X5?
There's a pretty good supply of movies/tv shows and bittorrent trackers with .m4v files ready for loading, and some vidcasts.
The question is, is there a program like iriverter or even a process to get them encoded for the X5?

good question. you could give Virtual Dub Mod a try. i'm not sure what programs will play those video files, but i'm sure that converting ipod videos will be easy to do in the short future in not already now that they upped their variety of shows. anyone looking to buy videos converted for the X5 can get them from me for $.50. :) okay, so maybe i don't have the rights to be selling them, oh well.

m4v is just an MPEG4 container that you need to convert to AVI with XviD video stream encoding. mencoder (and probably iRiverter) should be able to do the conversion. In linux, you also use transcode. I'm not sure about VirtualDub. You may see some degradation in the quality.

Okay, I've finally decided that I'm getting an X5L, hooray!

So I need so start encoding some videos. Now I'm a Linux user, Fedora Core 4 (2.6.11-1.1369_FC4) to be exact.

Now, I tried to install Iriverter from the command line, as root. At first, ./configure would fail claiming that there was no javac, however typing 'which javac' brought it right up, so it's there. So I added the --with-gcj argument and it got past that problem.

For the record, I have Java 1.5.0.04 installed.

So anyway, when I try to make, this is the output I'm getting (this is just the end now, I cut much of what was successful):

make[2]: Entering directory `/tmp/iriverter-0.14/src'
if gcj -fjni --classpath=/tmp/swt/swt.jar -g -O2 -MT iriverter-swt.o -MD -MP -MF ".deps/iriverter-swt.Tpo" -c -o iriverter-swt.o `test -f 'swt.jar' || echo './'`swt.jar; \
then mv -f ".deps/iriverter-swt.Tpo" ".deps/iriverter-swt.Po"; else rm -f ".deps/iriverter-swt.Tpo"; exit 1; fi

Let the configuration work out if you have a useable gcj. Make sure you have the JAVAC environment variable set to point to your javac instance.

e.g. Include this (change path appropriately for your system):
JAVAC=/usr/lib/java/bin/javac;export JAVAC

Also make sure you have the IBM SWT (swt.jar), in your classpath. SWT can be obtained from the Eclipse project.

Well, it made it through configure/make/make install by adding that argument, but now I get this when I try to run iriverter:

Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: org/thestaticvoid/iriverter/ConverterUI

There were also a lot of these in the Make info:

classpath /tmp/swt/swt.jar:. org/thestaticvoid/iriverter/MencoderStreamParser.java
make[2]: classpath: Command not found
make[2]: [org/thestaticvoid/iriverter/MencoderStreamParser.class] Error 127 (ignored)

That's just one. There were many.

Thoughts?

I'd still like to get iriverter working, but for now I've managed to get Konverter to do it... 160x128, XviD, MP3. Konverter being a graphical frontend for mencoder.

Did you also specify the location of swt.jar during the configure stage (chech switches with ./configure --help)? You may want to do that. I was able to configure and build iriverter.

It's not compiling and the execution line doesn't like the classpath tag as it thinks it is a command. JAVAC should be the full path to your Java compiler (javac) and it should be an executable. Make sure you have the J2SDK installed, not just the JRE which does not have the Java compiler. And you JAVAC environment variable should point to it - it should be in the bin directory of your J2SDK installation.

Trip

Is JDK the same as J2SDK?

If it is, then it's now installed.

I pointed to it and it still doesn't work. --with-gcj still fails, but without, I get while make-ing:

classpath /tmp/swt/swt.jar:. org/thestaticvoid/iriverter/Config.java
make[2]: classpath: Command not found
make[2]: [org/thestaticvoid/iriverter/Config.class] Error 127 (ignored)

BUT I only get it ONCE instead of however many times I got it before. I proceed to make install.

Trying to run it gives me this:

GCJ requires that you have the Gnu Compiler for Java installed (extension to gcc, etc). Some distributions don't have it. My Slackware distribution does. Your results indicate that you don't have the gcj installed.

You can test by typing "gcj" at the command line. I'm still worried about your compile as mine does not have any errors when I compile it. Make sure you do a "make clean" before you rebuild.

Once installed, you need the SWT java libraries (.jar) and the shared SWT native libaries (.so) installed on your system. I'd put them in the iriverter library directory ${prefix}/share/iriverter/lib.

Modify the "iriverter" shell script to point to these before you "make install".

There is a line in the shell script that looks similar to:
java -Djava.library.path=${exec_prefix}/lib -classpath $CLASSPATH:${prefix}/share/iriverter/lib/iriverter.jar:/home/myaccount/swt/swt.jar org.thestaticvoid.iriverter.ConverterUI

Change it now to:
java -Djava.library.path=${prefix}/share/iriverter/lib -classpath $CLASSPATH:${prefix}/share/iriverter/lib/iriverter.jar:${prefix}/share/iriverter/lib/swt.jar org.thestaticvoid.iriverter.ConverterUI

Now "make install".

Iriverter is way too complex for a Java newbie to play around with, in my opinion.

Don't configure it with the explicit --with-gcj flag. This also causes errors in my build. It is only used to build JunePimp with gcj.

I'm using swt 3139 (3.1). The 3.0 series doesn't have some of the methods required by iriverter.

When I remove the --gcj flag, the make fails entirely. No files are made.

I really don't know what to do with it. Configure shows that GCJ is installed, I have the javac path set, SWT 3139 is installed and referenced... Any ideas?

NOTE: Had to cut the top section of that code... the forum has a 10000 character limit.

I only get that error if JAVAC is not set correctly.

Run "javac -version" and tell me what you get.

Run "which javac" and tell me what you get.

The "brain dead" configure execution needs a little help with locating the java compiler.

Try "export JAVAC=/usr/bin/javac" and then running "configure" and "make" and see how that goes.

Everything APPEARS to work except for this during the make process:

Note: Some input files use unchecked or unsafe operations.
Note: Recompile with -Xlint:unchecked for details.

I got that twice. Everything else went smoothly. Tried to run iriverter...

I mentioned this earlier about the native libraries (the .so files with SWT) being referenced by -Djava.ibrary.path. Make sure the native libraries are all in the same directory with the SWT jars and modify the "iriverter" shell script so that it "points" to this directory for the java.library.path and that the classpath also correctly includes the swt.jar library.

It works! Hooray! I am in your debt. Works beautifully!

Thanks a lot!

Now I just converted a WMV into the X5-compatible AVI and... it's black and white. It could just be a problem with mplayer, since I don't have my X5L yet (11 more days). And it appears to have encoded at 1FPS.

Also, trying to encode a DivX file and it just sort of stalls. When I try to run the argument from the command line it fails, but taking a hint from this post: http://www.misticriver.net/showthread.php?t=33381 I've got it encoding by leaving out the 'resample' argument. Any thoughts?

The latest mencoder doesn't support a -resample option so I would just leave it out. To be honest, I prefer doing things manually. I use mencoder to translate from WMV and RM to MPG/AVI. I usually use transcode for converting from MPG/AVI to iAudio AVIs (it does a good job with resyncing audio and video). Also make sure you have the latest XviD library installed.

I don't know what folks are complaining about. Iriverter works great and converts movies straight from DVD without a hitch. I don't have any of the problems others are complaining about -- strange colors, buzzing audio, etc. However, the complaints might come from a bad installation of Iriverter and its underlying components

You must make sure you're using the latest Iriverter AND the latest version of MPlayer and Codec Packs. Iriverter is only a wrapper/shell for the underlying decoding/encoding/transcoding of MPlayer. Mplayer is constantly being improved and the version of Mplayer that is shipped with Iriverter is an older one.

To get the most reliable and seamless DVD to X5 method, download the latest Iriverter. Then download and install the latest Mplayer into the same places where the Iriverter Mplayer and Mencoder files are. Then download the latest Mplayer codecs into the codecs folder where Iriverter is.

Simple stuff, Great results from FREE software.

I'm using Iriverter to preview files of DVDs and I didn't have a problem with BladeRunner. I just tried previewing Blade and nothing is going on, tried cutting out a few of the first few chapters, see if that would do anything, but it is just a black screen, and I waited a couple of minutes longer than I had to with Bladerunner to show up. Should I just convert or is there a copyright block on it? If there is copyright block do you guys know anyway to edit the coding so I can Daemon Tool the .iso or is there a program to tear the copyright off.

Thanks in advance,
Jack

Hey, I didnt read this whole topic, but I read about some people having codec errors. If you cant play the movies you convert back on your pc, try downloading "k-lite codec pack".. Also, you might want to try a new player such as VLC (if you have a little slower comp) or "winamp"

Hope this helps some of you :) I dont have my X5L yet, have to wait 3 WEEKS until my bday.. :(

I've downloaded the latest version of Iriverter and have read through this entire thread, and frankly I'm perplexed as to why I should use this program instead of JetAudio's video converter for my X5 for the following reasons:

1. JetAudio's converter allows X5 videos to be converted with a video bitrate of up to 384 kbps. Iriverter only lets you go up to 256 kbps for the X5 video bitrate. Why is that?

2. JetAudio's converter keeps a proper 4x3 aspect ratio for videos (such as those originally at 640 by 480) by converting the video to 160 by 120 pixels. Iriverter slightly warps the aspect ratio of X5 videos by converting to 160 by 128 pixels. Why is that?

3. JetAudio's converter has a lot of options for how to handle subtitles. With Iriverter I see no options about subtitles.

So, am I missing something here?

Sorry, I've seen this thread a little late - but I have to add this to this horribly dangerous advice:

Serious warning:

Do not use codec packs - ever!

They seriously can fuck up your system. Nimo's codec pack is worst, but the K-Lite pack is a close second. If something goes wrong you have to reinstall Windows - completely, from scratch.

The only useful solution to play back several video formats/codecs, without installing them all, is CCCP (http://www.cccp-project.net/) - it doesn't install any codecs, only filters and switches to play back DivX, XviD, MKV, OGG, H264, etc. It's a highly optimized/tweaked version of FFDShow and the Haali splitter.

The complete opposite of those dumb and crappy codec packs.

So, am I missing something here? 1. C:\Program Files\iriverter\profiles\x5.profile
I don't know why it's set to 256, but you can easily edit that file in Notepad and type in 384.

2. Again, you can edit x5.profile so that it'll do 160x120 instead of 160x128. The reason I think the developer made it 160x128 is so that you would get the most out of your X5's screen. It's a reasonable conclusion to come to when you consider how small the screen is.

3. If you're ripping DVD's there is a subtitle option. I think you're looking for a feature that will tie in subtitles with already ripped video? That doesn't exist within iRiverter to my knowledge.

Since iRiverter uses mEncoder, it supports more input formats than JetAudio does.

:tongueu: I'm retarded.

I checked CCCP out, and it says it's intended use is for Anime. Is it still good for other video? I've been using ffdshow SSE2 builds so far.

dfkt
04-10-2006, 17:07
It's just made by a combined effort of some big IRC-anime communities.

'Optimized for anime' means only it's capable of playing every subtitle format. It has nothing to do with the image quality.

So, it's very fine for all-around usage, and it's very lightweight (less than 2MB download, and no concurring codecs installed). Everything is decoded perfectly, I just tested the new CCCP-build with a MKV-container, containing a H.264 video track, dual language SRT-subs and dual-AC3 5.1 sound - perfect!

No, any video that plays on your x5 should play on your computers provided you have the codecs installed.

*shrug* they play for me in player that comes with iriverter, but not winamp. cause i have an incredibly old version of winamp that i refuse to update, because everything after 2.91 sucked, including the last 2.x version. (it used twice the memory, and crashed repeatedly).

Hi,

I have a quick query about changing the framerate with iRiverter.

The original post said:

Now you can choose whatever framerate you want but I would reccommend dragging the bar until it say "14 kbps"

This is 14 fps and the preferred framerate for viewing movies on the X5. Some prefer 12 fps, but you can experiment to find your likings.

I have v0.16 of iriverter, but can't find any frame rate option. Can someone please tell me where this is (and yes, I do feel really silly)?

It seems that I could change settings in the log viewer, but there seems to be no place to drag a bar as mentioned by Brad. Any help would be appreciated!

Also, why would I want to change the framerate? I was planing to experiment as I read somewhere that a lower framerate reduces jerkiness in action scenes. Is this true? What is your "ideal" framerate for movies high in action?

Thank you!

I think the latest version of iriverter does not allow you to specify a frame rate anymore. It's standardized. But I think you can hack the settings file to make it what you want. I haven't tried any of this as I no longer use iriverter at all.

correct, the latest version of iriverter doesn't have the framerate option - don't know why. i think Z's Uncle uses Virtual Dub Mod - and that's what i use, too. after you use it once its pretty simple from there on. and i've always got the best results from VDM and has options for every setting you could need. but as i've mentioned before, for straight from DVDs i still use iriverter - simple and great results.

Fortyquid, have you made any progress? I have downloaded and tried v0.16. I found I had to set the video bitrate at the minimum and even then it converted at around 20fps, which is greater than the 14fps recommended. Picture was good though. I set the sound at the minimum and that was not a good idea. I found that it took as long to convert as it does to view the video. Pity one can't get hold of v0.13 anymore.

Hi everyone! I have v 17 and I'm experiencing the same thing. I adjust all the settings, click on "convert" and instantly it says "complete" when I know there is no way it's done anything.

Now unfortunately, I don't have a Cowon, I have a Creative ZVM, but I googled something like "having trouble with Iriverter" and found this site and thread. [smile]

I figured while you wouldn't be able to give me specifics for my player, you might be able to tell me what I'm doing wrong, if I'm missing some codecs or something and give me some general advice.

Do I need something on my computer in addition to the Ireverter program? I'm new to all this and pretty clueless. I liked the idea of Iriverter as I could convert directly from my dvd's and not have to decrypt them onto my hd first.

Any help or suggestions would be GREATLY appreciated!

You know this might seem painfully obvious, but did you actually add a conversion job yet? I actually just opened iRiverter today for the first time in probably a year, and I forgot to load a job before clicking on the convert button.

I realize this may be an obvious thing to do, but sometimes it's the most obvious thing that messes us up... [biggrin]

Yeah, I did. A dialog box opened that said something like "reading number of chapters..." (it had 4), I set the output location and adjusted the bitrate, player, etc., and instantly it says "complete".

I have no idea what I'm doing wrong or if I need some other software in addition to the Iriverter program.
