Hey everyone,
I'm not sure if this counts as a direct advertisement, but i'm santoki, also creator of sketchlite series from 2souldesign and would like to say an official "hello."
I just recently purchased a cowon s9 and it's pretty much one of the best platforms to develop flash games for, so we decided on making a huge project devoted to the Cowon s9.
Currently the game is going through its alpha stages currently known as "Shadow Kai" although you can't play the game as of now, we've made a little sneakpeak trailer you can see to kinda get a feel for how the game play will be.

I'm trying my best to migrate our old website to this new site, so there might be some delays in terms of new, but we'll do our best to update each week with some new builds for this game.

Only one game has been made specifically for D2 which was a jingaroo alpha download. The reason I wasn't able to focus on the D2 was the lack of a D2 player. As tirim4 mentioned, most clix games happened to work on the D2.

Nice! Can't wait to see the beta! As a developer, how would you judge the capabilities of the s9? In other words what types of games can we expect given the processing power of the S9. As a Flash animator who does a lot of games for the web I know what the limitations are for that technology but really have no idea what could be done for the S9. Thanks!

I made a post on ABI, but I'll re post with a little more input:
The Cowon s9 is NOT contrary to intuition a flash lite device something the iriver clix, clix2 emulates. I'm not sure about the D2, but the s9 is literally able to use the unabridged version of flash, namely those games you play online. However, this can be a slight handicap as well as there are some vital features in the FlashLite language specifically aimed for mobile devices.
Cons:
No FScommands. (native to mobile devices - eg s9)
Can't use accelometer. It's a bold claim on my part, but there is no function in flash to handle an accelometer. Perhaps in a future release firmware, Cowon will release an API to handle it; but for the timebeing think of the s9 as a computer playing an accelometer flash game - simply put, not possible. (please correct me if wrong!). If it were available, the code would look something like this (An API developed for a chumby system using flashlite (not flash)var getAccelerometer:Function = ["ASnative"](5, 60);version = _accelerometer(0);
timestamp = _accelerometer(1);
currentX = _accelerometer(2);
currentY = _accelerometer(3);
currentZ = _accelerometer(4);
avgX = _accelerometer(5);
avgY = _accelerometer(6);
avgZ = _accelerometer(7);
impactX = _accelerometer(8);

impactZ = _accelerometer(10);

Edit: it looks like accelerometer actually works, but it is limited to left down up right, no specific angles.
special commands specific for mobile devices. eg: full screen/quit/etc.
Pros:
More features in the actual flash player over the flashlite player
Easier/Native syntax for programmers
More tutorials for new people to program
Mouse functions can be used
Can control more than 3 movie clips without lagging
Maybe:
XML loading
Loading other flash
Loading external data (txt,jpeg,etc)
Saving data using Persistent data
It's not a list set in stone, but it definitely is the case for the current firmware build. I'm sure if Cowon makes an API for the s9 the Accelerometer can be utilized as it was the case for the above mentioned device - the chumby.
As of now, I see a lot of "finger" games to be made: drag and drop, drag and release, preasure pressing, typing, etc.
In terms of animation, I think as long as you create animation semi-sparingly you should notice no lag. Treat it as a 500mhtz computer :) Less blur and strokes they really use up the resources.

Hopefully Cowon will release an API so that the accelerometer can be utilized in games.
Sounds like we will in all likelihood see more puzzley or strategy style games than fast paced arcadey games given the processors limitations.

hey santoki, if we can somehow get the SWF of a flash game online, and change the dimensions and stuff. would it be playable on the S9? lol. just wondering after you said that it doesn't use the abridged version of flash.
^ that's true to an extent.
It'll only play flash games created with Action script 2.0 and compiled with version 7 or lower.
You also have a 5mb memory limit
Also the flash may not necessarily accommodate the area of click. For instance, a button. The s9 will only react up to a certain amount of pixels, namely 50 pixels being the "sweet spot."
There's a couple restrictions to consider, but if the flash game you find online meets those requirements - it should work :)

5mb limit is a lot. i remember i put a 4 mb flash game on the clix 2 and it said file was too big. lol

tower defense huh? [thumbsup] I like it. But I think we're planning on finishing this game first before anything is released. Of course if the game is really small we'll push in little ones too :)

cause ftaka apparently made a auto-pivoting browser that works perfectly fine and browser was only made for portrait.

wow! to be totally honest with you, I didn't know such app existed, but I had made my own beat app as my first project for the s9!
Actually I think this iphone app has a better execution of the beat making. And to answer your question, Of course it's possible! If you can actually get me some good percussion beats in a .wav or .mp3 (preferred) I can whip up something very similar to this.
You can check out my extremely personal beat making app on the downloads section. It was a crude way for me to start learning the schematics of the s9's touch sensitivity and drag features - so it's definitely not perfect. Have a try here (http://www.2souldesign.net/downloads/)

that kinda makes sense. When I read your previous post I thought abut how cowon could have implemented coverflow/video pivot in ther flash based interface if they couldn't acces the g-sensor via flash :D

Because I don't know the hardware behind the s9 I couldn't tell you positively, but if I had to guess I would have to unfortunately say - no. I hope I'm wrong though D:
Nevertheless, a smart programmer can definitely emulate a tilt/ measured movement.
For instance adding a gravity/friction engine that would slowly add to the object of concentration more acceleration as the s9 tilts to one direction. :)

I was wondering if it would be possible to create it so that there could be a mute button for in game sounds in the event that we would like to listen to our music WHILE playing the game?
I'm not even sure if that's a possibility, but it's a thought.

you need a 300-400 dollar program called Macromedia flash MX :)
and good knowledge of programming in actionscript

I'll have a try when I eventually get mine, haven't learnt actionscript yet but it doesn't seem like too difficult a language to learn.
The accelerometer only releases 4 values: 0, 1, 2, 3.
Not more.
That means you can only get 0°, 180°, 270°, 360°.
I haven't created a flash app yet which tests that, but the UCI source code says all.

So what you're trying to say is that a tilt function can not be implemented? Like the way it is implemented in "Beer Pong" on the itouch, if you've ever seen or played THAT game? (I was hoping I wouldnt have to make such a comparison [no])
The only thing I know is that what I said; You can only get the 4 directions I said, no more.
Maybe it is possible to create a game whith a tilt function, but I'm not sure.
I guess you could emulate a crude tilt... try this thought:
Since there is only a quad-directional emulation you could set some sort of directional timer.
By tilting to the 90* position you could set the up vector variable to add itself by one. As you continue to hold the up direction the up vector will quickly exponentially grow. This will give some sort of artificial emulation of a tilt, but of course is flawed. just a thought. :P
I've made a tutorial on how to use the g-sensor on the s9.
I've included two files.
One is a really basic file that simply tells the user where the sensor "senses." It's basic enough that anyone can tweak it without dissecting through so many codes.
The other file consists of a fun little sim-like ball that you can play around with. The three variables you can play with is the fall speed (gravity), friction (roll), and bounce_power (power after hitting boundary).

I don't know if you saw my chatbox message or not, but how hard would it be to update the ball app to reflect the g-sensor accuracy?
Would it be as simple as copy/paste from the S9 game that was released? Or something more in depth and complex?
It's really a copy and paste, but I would like to add a whole new interface to the ball app that will make it more of a game. :)

lol, you are more persistent than even me :P! I email Cowon almost every week and I know they are sick of my emails by giving me the standard message "We will direct your email to our Cowon Team in Korea, thank you for your time in writing to us of your concerns."
Alright... with alpha builds there's just one rule and one request.
1. Please do not share the file, no matter what. Which includes, but not limited to uploading to a server, privately sending to another person, etc. (you may take screen shot, pictures, video)
1. If you dl it. Let me know what you think comments and critiques. :)

The only thing that kind of bugs me about this one is the fact that the ball resets every time you touch a wall. I am not sure if this is going to be your method for the final build, but I thought I would mention it.
The game right off the bat reminds me of Labyrinth.

Other than that, I am really looking forward to the final release! I will probably kill my S9 battery every day playing with this lol

Santoki, if you need an idea for a simple game involving the g-sensor, pong would be a pretty cool start. It could be just like regular pong except you use the g-sensor to move the slider. The same could be done with a "Brick Breaker" type game.

when my player is exactly horizontal the ball rolls to the right...
You need to hold the player parallel to the floor before you start the flash app. It reads whatever level you are holding it as 'flat' when you start it, so the ball does not immediately start rolling.

this is insanity. easily the best app or game ever developed for the S9, and one that shows its true potential! I agree that it would be fun to play without the ball resetting, but I also kind of like it...maybe make it an option?

I know it's only in it's alpha stages but i've found the most awesome bug. If you turn the player 90 degrees from when the ball is stationary you blast through all walls and find youself at the oposite side of the screen!
Also how long do you think it will be before we see the next verson?

Wow, it looks like you guys know what you're talking about!
I'm certainly impressed by the potential of the demo you posted. Looks like we're gonna have a game to rival those on the Ipod touch!
One question, in the future, once we/you have a better grasp of how the inner working on the cowon s9 work, would it be possible to make a game similar to LoccoRoco that would make use of the G-sensor? I know that it may seem like an ambitious/arrogant request, but it's just something I would love to see on the S9!

I am happy with the S9 player.It has great sound quality and great video.Let me elaborate.My point is that Cowon has the potential to make more profit and have more customers.If they would improve their firmware!And people have been putting up with this ever since they have been around.I'm not saying to follow apple.Just make their firmware up to date and user friendly.There is no other company that has their customers improving their firmware for them except Cowon.I'm sure a lot of other Cowon customers would agree with me.I think they are just lazy and complacent!!PS.I don't "be happy with what i get".I have the right to complain,especially if it's relevant!And they don't advertise the S9 as a limited flash based payer.It's advertised as a Personalized Media Player.

A lot of good apps on the iTouch are available because they can charge money for it. You can't do that for the S9.

@ Nirvana1000: Are you a previous ipod/ itouch/ iphone owner? Reason I ask is because these type of owners EXPECT TOO MUCH from other companies! The Cowon S9 is actually categorized on Cowons website in the MP3 Category. This means It's bent on Music and video is secondary, everything else is an after thought.

It's not categorized as a PMP... it's catergorized as a MP3 Player. I personally like how claw has made the S9 bigger in customization than we all can ever imagine and prefer that cowon just pump out their firmware like usual and not cater to everyone's wants and needs, they actually don't HAVE to pop out updates at all, they merely do to keep the fans happy. If Cowon tried to do EVERYTHING (like Apple tries to do), there wouldn't be ANY creativity on this forum whatsoever. This forum probably wouldn't exist and Santoki wouldn't need to pop out games for us because Cowon would have already done it. Cowon's devices are unique not only because of Cowon but the awesome community here with their great creativitiy. Don't presume that Cowon should cater to the American market, they are from Korea after all, they don't have to send us updates to their products or even give us their devices at all (I appreciate that they do though). I'm not saying that it's not alright to complain but there's a point in when complaining about the community is doing more than Cowon is just not right. Look at Apple for example, did they MAKE Quake and Doom for their devices available to use for the community, NO, it was the COMMUNITY that made that happen. The mp3/PMP community will always outdo the original makers sometimes and that's quite alright, I embrace creativity and so do many others on this forum.

There's a few bugs I just can't seem to debug, but I'll release the game (beta, of course) with some information on that, otherwise, it's coming.

The new game is called Flight.
Yes, I know. A very simple name. It's still in its early stages in style, effect and play. However, it still holds a lot of the most basic functions of the game and will be expanded based off of what you can do at the present beta.
There's one powerup (Matrix "bullet time-like") and two types of enemies at the moment, but it should still be fun until the next beta builds arrive. I should also note that every beta build will be coming out every weekend, unless otherwise mentioned.
So check it out at my blog. :)
Sweet, this game is really cool :) A high score board would be nice if you haven't thought about adding that already. Cant wait for the next release.

Hmm I'm not sure if I want to download that update.
My S9 never freezes or lags, I wish he would keep adding more stuff instead of supposedly making it faster, or at least have 2 versions, 1 for speed and 1 for more stuff.
I'll take that into consideration.
My experience with "laggy" games has always been unimpressive, but if content is the more preferred, I'll see what I can do.
This next update should be a bit better since I'm not going on a weekend vacation.

At the time, I didn't know how to use the g-sensor, but I'll see what I can do about it. The game is kind of like a "hockey puck" game in that you flick a disk at enemies.... haha

I'm really impressed by the improvements since the last version. This game is getting better and better, and it's one of the best S9 game so far. So first of all thanks Santoki for this nice application [thumbsup] .
Also, I have some suggestions :
-Why not also use the [-] button to shoot ? It would be more comfortable then press the screen (and if you can shoot the two ways its even better you can choose)
-Secondly, even if I can close the game by pressing the play button (using Claw's Wallpaper) it would be nice to have a simple exit fonction in the main menu.
-The last thing is about the main menu too. It would be nice to have a magnify or highlight effect on the main menu while scrolling/touching to let you know exactly what you're selecting.

This was a huge update that took a lot of free time from me, a lot of the updates from now will be much smaller, but will gradually improve over time.

I liked it better without the starry background, but other than that it is pretty good(though it slowed down a lot when I had a lot of explosions going on...).
It's a trade off.
Most of the complaints was that there was no action, so the equivalent trade of more action is more lag. :/

I thought that would be sweet to, but seeing that the bluetooth function doesn't allow files to be transferred makes me think we're stuck with single player mode. [no]
Nevertheless, I think flash lags because of the computation that is required for every little loop of action per object. So more the object with a looped action, the more cpu intensive.
A little freebie information about Flight's backend-programming:
The reason why some crafts don't deal damage to the hero when you crash into them is because that would mean one more additional loop of action while the craft is visible on the screen.
Here's an English version of what a single plane does:
Appears on screen.
{Move Down 2 pixels, did I reach end of screen? Nope. Check where Hero is, calculate and record it. Adjust rotation to aim at hero. Check if time to shoot. Nope. Is Hero touching me? If so Blow him and I up. Is a bullet touching me? Nope.
} All that inside the bracket for one Frame Per second. And this game runs at 27 FPS. That's just one unique craft, imagine how that will add up computationally for a device only meant to play sound or movies.

Yes, programming animation is never fun. I've never done it in Flash, but the languages I have programmed it in were a nightmare if I wanted any kind of playability. Optimization for the win!
Anyways, I had an idea for the bullets. Instead of firing straight up, why not fire towards wherever you touched on the screen? They can fire at an angle, so why can't we? It's a great game, though, and definitely in my top 3.

I've worked pretty hard on optimizing the lag issue. This was the biggest problem / concern for most tower defense games. I spent hours on trying to get the best performance, and I think I've come very close to it.
Music at the same time is an issue cowon should look into. I know my previous iriver clix was able to handle it through firmware, even the hunter game, so it is possible imo.
Oh I should have mentioned, the latest is meant to be difficult... since I had originally played as default "hard" setting.

Upgrading sometimes just doesn't work! I press the upgrade button, have enough money but nothing happens! Sometimes it works for one tower but not for the next.
Edit: I am always able to upgrade the first tower but not the second.
The game is fun, but the values seem off. First, upgrading is too expensive and does too much; smaller upgrades would be better. I'd say money accumulates too slowly at levels > 4 or 5, and the enemies become far too tough to kill around then.
In a few tower defense games I've played, there's a break between levels. I think that might be a nice improvement.

Yes, one of the hardest thing for me to do was setting the values, rate of fire, range and cost. However, the fact that you've pin pointed the crucial eg: smaller upgrades, money slow on 4 & 5, tough enemies will help me greatly in refining these balancing issues.

Yeah, I got to 5037 last night, through sellings some upgraded towers and using the money to upgrade another one even more (and I remember getting to something like 5300 but that would be on the first night, and rather late -yawn-, so maybe I'm wrong). But level 6-7 seems to be the absolute limit for me.
Another suggestion would be something to indicate (like a cursor) what tower is currently selected. I sometimes wasn't sure if I pressed a certain tower correctly or not and ended up pressing again - not a very large issue but that usually happens when I'm in a big hurry to sell something and upgrade something else.
I already e-mailed you some balancing issues but I think I found one concerning the Damage Tower. First of all, by the time you're able to buy a Damage Tower, you might as well upgrade your Shot Towers, as upgrading to a lvl 3 Shot Tower costs you 75 and gives you equal power and more speed/range than the lvl 1 Damage Tower, which costs 100. Also, by the time you'll have that kind of money, the lvl 2 Shot Tower seems pretty useless vs. the enemies too (even the lvl 3 one, actually). I usually release a beta when it hits v1, but I'll be totally honest with you in that this balancing issue make prolong the beta. :[
Yeah, I got to 5037 last night, through sellings some upgraded towers and using the money to upgrade another one even more (and I remember getting to something like 5300 but that would be on the first night, and rather late -yawn-, so maybe I'm wrong). But level 6-7 seems to be the absolute limit for me.
Another suggestion would be something to indicate (like a cursor) what tower is currently selected. I sometimes wasn't sure if I pressed a certain tower correctly or not and ended up pressing again - not a very large issue but that usually happens when I'm in a big hurry to sell something and upgrade something else.
I already e-mailed you some balancing issues but I think I found one concerning the Damage Tower. First of all, by the time you're able to buy a Damage Tower, you might as well upgrade your Shot Towers, as upgrading to a lvl 3 Shot Tower costs you 75 and gives you equal power and more speed/range than the lvl 1 Damage Tower, which costs 100. Also, by the time you'll have that kind of money, the lvl 2 Shot Tower seems pretty useless vs. the enemies too (even the lvl 3 one, actually). I'm very impressed with santoki's responsiveness to suggestions. I've suggested inexpensive dummy towers so one can create mazes, and he said he'll try and implement it. Other alpha-testers- make suggestions; I think this will end up the best game on the S9 by far!

Another slight bug- when you upgrade towers, the display looks like you're ADDING performance. (e.g. the normal tower is 2 damage, and when you upgrade, it says +5 on damage). In my mind, that means damage should become 7, but it actually becomes 5. I'd either eliminate the "+" in the display, or I would fix this. (I think fixing it would be fair, since the price actually is +XX.) In the defaults, the speed tower actually loses performance with one of the upgrades (Level 4?).

After restarting, after getting over level three, the previous enemies keep coming in addition to the knew ones. The enemies from the past level stop after about ten seconds.
Level 5 gets ridiculously hard. I was say either reduce the amount of enemies or make them take a bit less hits. I've tried loading up on damage towers, (upgraded) speed towers, slow towers in combination with those...bah! so difficult. lol.
top score: 5900 so far.

Not you. haha, I left in one of my "evil" functions that allowed any set of level to bolster a sudden spike of defense. In this case, I left it there with the red...

This is due to my poor programming scheme. As of now I have a huge grudge of going back to change that one big problem, but I'll see what I can do about that. [surrend]

Fixed. Fixed. In fact, all towers received a major stat change. Makes it difficult to win game without other towers. [thumbsup]

Shooting two object at once is cpu intensive. In fact, the slow tower would be much more viable in consideration, as I would love for it to shoot a slow speed wad and anything crossing it would be slowed, but this is too cpu intensive unfortunately. [cry]

Ah I see. I actually began with the idea that the towers placement will determine the enemies route, but as you mentioned, this taxed on the s9's cpu heavily - making the game too laggy.
There had to be many compromises and optimizations to make it what it is right now. However I agree that strategy may seem lacking if the opponent simply goes one way. I'll see what I can do in future development.

I got all but two achievements then acerdentally hit "reset". :o(
I think the first screen should be a load screen with so many save slots and then to reset the achievements and highscore you simply delete the save.

hmm i think i foud a bug - not shure wether ist in the game or in claws uci:
i created a icon for the game in claws uci and everytime i exit the game and shutoff my s9 all archievments and the highscore are deleted.
EDIT: everytime i exit the game my saves are deleted.
EDIT 2: i run the game in any other uci and all my archievments never got saved after i exit the game.
I use Claw's as well (with icon) and my stats are saved. Do you use run mode flash browser?
PS: I don't want to brag with my highscore, but I do nevertheless ;): 115082
I saw that golden boss once but failed to destroy him and I don't think I ever saw the shield boss.

well, i found a solution for my problem. i deleted the sol folder _tdv1.0 (or sth like that) and now everything works fine. maybe my skills were too good for the game so it tried to beat me like that [devil]

Instructions for you:
Instructions on how to play. Start the game.
Ttap the various Towers on the right side of the screen to see their stats (speed of fire, damage per shot, price to buy a tower...etc. the little icons tell you what the stats are)
After you look at the various towers, tap the tower that you wish to use, then tap a place on the grid where you want to put the tower.
tap GO when you are ready. Enemies will start streaming in from the left-hand side of the screen and your tower(s) will start shooting at them.
Aafter you get enough $$, you can add more towers, or upgrade existing ones. (to upgrade a tower on the board, simply tap on the one you want to upgrade, see if there is enough money to upgrade it, then click upgrade at the bottom right).
have fun
you can also edit the strengths and weaknesses of the towers in the editor mode
