View Full Version : Battery Life - As Advertised?

I was on another forum (Head-fi), and a few people were complaining about the S9's battery life being much shorter than advertised in their specs.
Can those with S9's comment on this? Does the battery last anywhere close to as long as advertised (55 hours)?
Note: My D2, even after two years, still performs close to its 52 hours, so I'd be very disappointed if the S9 didn't perform up to par.

Unfortunately, with my S9 the battery life has not lived up to expectations. I dunno, maybe the Cowon testers found a way to watch movies with the screen turned off but I'm not getting too close to the advertised hours:D. Haven't done an official testing though. Disappointing but not a deal breaker for me.
Movies- lasts about 6.5-7.5 hours per charge. A little more than half the advertised duration. Still beats the A3 (2.5 hours), Q5W (3-3.5 hours), and Archos 5 (4-4.5 hours). Still happy.
Edit: Details for videos watched- about 8mb/minute. 624x352 res, 23fps
some user said he got only 36hrs of Music playback but he didn't give in detail on settings or his Files like Format such as OGG or FLAC.

I got 40-ish while using the screen sometimes. First @ home when I just got it then when I went biking to school, in my pocket, 1,5 hours a day. Used in in the car too. Lasted 2,5 weeks after first charge. Didn't use any other functions actually.

Cowon Test conditions:
1. Video Test Conditions:
- Video : Xvid, 480x272, 24fps, CBR, LCD Brightness (Level : 4)
- Audio : MP3, 128kbps CBR, Volume 15
2. Audio Test Conditions: MP3, 128kbps, EQ Normal, Volume 15, Display Always Off, Bluetooth Off, Switch Hold, Bundle earphones
Battery performance was tested under optimal conditions by manufacturer, whatever those might be....

All mp3, mostly 320kbps, volume 12, bbe=2, mach3bass=2
Listened to 2 hours of audio and about 1.5 hours of video this morning, battery down to about 85%.

Don't trust the battery indicator. It's not trustworthy. I used mine for 20 hours when it was "nearly empty" (almost no blue)
Battery indicator gave me 1 bar after about 20 hrs: volume - 30, equalizer - rock, bbe and mach3 - 5 and mp on. mp3s at 320kbps and some flacs here and there. i think that's pretty good.
Forgot to mention: This was with very little fiddling with the screen. I just had it hooked up to my JBL portable speaker for a really long time.
I thought the s9 doesn't do bars? Isn't the battery meter measured in pixels?
Well a couple of pixels = a bar :P
Mine seems to go to 3/4 very quickly, then to half a bit less quickly and stay there for quite a long time. Only let it go down to 1/4 once and i've not done any timing or anything so i'm not too sure how long. Seems to be quite a lot less than 55 hours though unless it'll stay on 1/4 or empty for a long time.
I think you might get 55 hrs if you play a 128kbps wma or mp3 flat with no enhancements, flicking the switch to the left immediately and then locking it and not touching it. on volume 10-15.
i'm pretty sure that's kinda what they for testing it.

Chances are that the battery needs some priming to reach optimal. A few more charge and discharges should do.
Besides I remember reading somewhere that the S9 was expected to have 40 hour battery life and that became a downer for those coming from the D2.

li-poly-ion batteries do not need to be "primed", they're good to go after the first charge.

I got my S9 two weeks ago, but didn't begin using it until yesterday because I was waiting for the case to arrive. Anyway, it appeared fully charged when it arrived. However, yesterday was the first time I used it in earnest. I guess I used it for a total of four hours. At the end of day I noticed that it was only 3/4 full. [confused]
I let it charge via my computer for three hours last night. Today, same amount of usage--and same result as yesterday.
Now, I want to buy an AC adapter so I can see when the player is fully charged.
My D2 took forever to fully deplete. In fact, I think it only happened once.

Battery meters on these types of devices are rarely all that accurate, if you're really, really concerned then do a battery runtime test and see what you get.

I agree with DAPMagic, the D2 was a monster when it came to real-life battery depletion, it seemed to last almost forever. If the S9, which on paper is SUPPOSED to have better battery life, doesn't even last as long as the D2 when playing off an SDHC card, then Cowon clearly milked the S9's numbers this time around.

With the i6 I had to charge it EVERY day. [sad] I hope this won't be the case with the S9. [unsure]
The battery meter is really, really inaccurate. Watching Xvid video 480x272, 24fps, 1200kbps vid, 128kbps mp3 sound, the battery meter drained to 1/4 in 2 hours, then stayed there for another 6 and a 1/2 hours before the device gave the low battery warning and turned off. 8 and a 1/2 hours for video isn't that bad, especcially considering I wasn't using the device in any 'optimum' way.
Haven't had a chance to test music, but a similar thing happens, meter drains down to 1/4 in a few hours then stays there for 10 times as long as it took to drain to that point.
