Hey i'm just interested to know what are your first impressions of the S9, for those of you lucky enough to have one in your hands to fondle with :)

Tell us what you love about it and what you don't? and how it compares to other cowon players, and with the likes of other brands.

Over the years...
iAudio 5- First mp3 player, nice features but cheaply built.
U3- Extremely happy with this one. Nice battery life (at the time) and sounds great. Lost and bought new ones twice.
iAudio 7- INSANE battery life. Owned for 4 months before selling and only charged about 10 times. Didn't like the touch buttons as it's too sensitive. Holding the sides of the player would send the buttons wild. Nuts.
A3- Great screen, stiff feeling buttons. Battery sucks- 2.5 hours average. Battery meter sucks even more- 3 bars if full, then 2 bars until battery is dead. No warnings. Made me want to stomp on the thing.
Q5W- Dull screen, unsaturated colors, 2.5-3.5 hour battery and buggy bluetooth and wifi. Otherwise feature packed...too many unused features for me. Sold on ebay.
Archos 5- Perfect except for HDD PMP is heavy, slow (needs to spin up) and occasionally buggy (files disappearing, and reappearing on reboot). Did I mention you need to pay extra to get the codecs unlocked? Screen is bright and colors are vivid. Loved the screen.

So mainly I'm interested in battery life, portability, style/design, and the screen.

The S9 pretty much meets all my requirements. What I don't like are the bugs, but I'm sure it'll be fixed in future firmwares.

What I LOVE- The screen is TEMPERED GLASS! Scratchproof! A little thicker, maybe bulletproof too [laugh]

The S9's screen is fantastic, everything is so clear! By comparison the colors of the other players (no cowon players) are wan.
The battery life is very long and the sound quality is amazing when the EQ is configured and enabled (that is what I love^^).

Sometimes the interface hangs suddenly without any reason, e.g. after video playback it was two times - the main menu animation (when the icons fall down) was absolutely slow and then the player hung.
But I think it's nothing Cowon can't fix in coming firmwares. ;)

All in all, the S9 is perfect for me. Long battery life; perfect sound quality; nice video playback; good portability; great design; amazing screen. That is what I need. :)

I've had:
Rio Karma
X5L
Creative Vision:M
A7
and now the S9. Overall it's a really fantastic screen, the battery life is awesome and the UI is really nice to look at. After about 10 minutes of going through every menu you learn to understand how the player works as far as navigation is concerned. After about 20 minutes or so you begin to understand how to use the touchscreen. I've been used to the ipod and it's a lot different as far as im concerned with how it works with your finger. Things aren't as resposive (yet) and the system is a bit laggy at times. I'm sure this will be fixed in the future. Let's move on

Some major cons for me so far(I've read through the guide, and i've tinkered. I'm not expert so i might be wrong on the following):
On the fly playists kinda suck. I always like being able to queue up an album and after two days of tinkering i've given up on figurign out how to do it. I'm convinced you have to do it in windows which is stupid if you ask me. Queue is the nicest basic features to have when on the fly playlists are concerned. Why they would not include albums for queueing is beyond me.

Why don't they have a auto playlist maker using ID3 tags? This feature was always nice on mp3 players such as Rio Karma, Creative Vision:M, and ipods. You know: play the most played, or make a random playlist, last album played, etc. Maybe i haven't played around with it yet, but it's not obviously seen if it does exits.

Gapless playback. I'm also not sure if this exists but it's the nicest perk to have on your player.

Album art is a bit laggy. The ipods have a lot smoother album art browser than the S9. They will fix this in the future. quick list feature is nice, something different i guess. Kinda useless but hey, just my opinion. Haven't really tinkered with it taht much.

With the cons out of the way the build quality is freaking amazing. I have no idea why some reviewers wrote that it felt cheap. It's light but by no means is it cheaply made. Feels just as awesome as the Ipod Touch if you ask me. Comfortable and has a TON of options for navigation (feedback buttons on the top and bottom of the player). The screen is the best screen i've seen. It's smooth, responsive, has great color, and if feels great to the touch.

Once you have the navigation down, using the UI has been awesome to say the least. It's very easy to find anything you want (if you organanised your music like i do[not saying it's the best], i have: artist -->Album--> 01 - Artist - NameOfSong), and i love album art. It's a little laggy, but it does a great job of displaying everything i need as far as info on the song is concerned.

Overall as an MP3 player (which is the main reason i got it) it's about an 8/10. The only mp3 player that's been better is the rio karma which did just about everything right for music. The sound is amazing, the screen is amazing, but the lack of on the fly playlists really kills this thing for me. Of course this is a very new player and i am sure they will add gapless (god i hope), improve the smoothness of the ui, improve the response to the touch (it is a little slow if you ask me, once again comparing it to the touch), and add some more cool featuers to make your listening experience more fun. Oh and the G sensor kinda sucks, but whatever it's not really a big deal to me.

Ok enough rambling.

I went from a Creative Zen Microphoto to using a new Zen (my brother's but i used it enough) to this.

I'm really liking it, only album art is laggy when scrolling, they should really be able to not load so slowly, and be able to combine album art with each album. I wonder why it's so laggy though, because it's laggy even without album art. They need to fix that asap

Previously I had the Creative Zen Microphoto.

Deboxing this was fun. It's my first Cowon products so I didn't know what to expect. It came in a nice long box. When my sister got her iPod nano for Christmas, there wasn't much of this because of Apple's simple clear plastic packaging-kinda takes away the mystery.

At first, it seemed smaller than I thought. I've uploaded some videos-it plays them beautifully. I think I need to invest in some new earphones because when I use my Coby ones that came in a three pack, I was really dissapointed with the sound. Music was only coming out of one earphone and not both. I compared this to my sister's earphones and it sounded much better.

I really like the nice battery life. Even though my microphoto held up well in this department, this is a huge upgrade.

I couldn't seem to find the music shuffle-I always listen to my music in shuffle, but reading the manual yesterday I was finally able to find the randomn play button.

Now it makes sense. I've been trying to figure out the importance of playlists. All of my mp3 players allowed me to navigate via folders and not ID3 tags. [rolleyes]

One of the things I like about the S9 is that you can change the font. I also like that .txt files are formatted better that they were on the D2. Ugh. [wacko]

I miss the dictionary and notepad features. I hope these will become available in future FW updates.

Press "flip" while listening to music and one of the options should be shuffle.

For those with the Samsung P2 and Cowon S9 how much thicker is the S9? I'll be picking one of the players up in a few days. The only thing that makes me want the P2 is the better sounding radio and 7 band EQ options (I love fiddling with EQs and find the P2s bass to be cleaner than the D2). The S9 has everything else. For the on the go playlist what is the max amount of songs you can put in it? The D2 stops at 256.

J&R charges a restocking fee should you exchange players. B&H is more lenient but their S9 is $240 while J&R is $220 (not in stock yet but we'll see in a few days).

If you'd ask, very simply ask them to "cut the price by $10" because they've been giving your friends $10 discounts, they'll gladly place an order at $209. [laugh]

Oh and there seem to be no quick option for shuffle. Like if i want to shuffle all my music then i have to go into songs play them all and set it to shuffle. There is no quick option for doing it. I've tried loading up an album, then setting the shuffle setting, setting the boundary to all, and turning off repeat yet it still seems to play all the songs in the current album. Dunno how to do it beside starting at the songs area

Takes less work to shuffle all songs on the S9 than it does on my ZVM (when it has default menu layout) which has an option to directly do it.

it's a really nice player. I mean it does the job you want it to do. But it's not "the ultimate mp3" player. WHile it definitely sounds awesome, it falls short in many things as far as the UI is concerned.

Overall i think it's a great player, just a lot of shortcomings that will probably be fixed later on.

Given that, as I understand, the entire firmware [EDIT - entire interface I meant to type) is out there to tamper with, is it fair to say that it has the potential to be the ultimate player in the hands of the right programmers and designers?

In terms of the things that people can't change - like the sound quality and the screen quality, how would people rate it compared to what is out there?

The only three words you need:
Best.MP3Player.Ever :D

But on a more professional note, the only bad things i can think of are as follows:

1) Disconcertingly light
2) Although by no means cheapening the unit, it does feel fragile
3) Annoying little bug with WAV files and Windows media player, where if you connect as a different device type after syncing, all your album work vanishes [thumbdwn] (i use FLAC instead now anyway)
4) Stock headphones aren't fit to use as shoelaces
5) Package is a little minimal, a foam sleeve or something would have been nice for a £200 MP3 player

But these are all minor niggles :)

Yes it does. I used the Ipod touch yesterday to see how the tactical feedback felt and it was a crap load better than the S9. The interface is smooth, the album art is smooth, and you only need to hit the touchscreen one time to drill down to tnext part of the menu. For some reason if i want to traverse the folders on the S9 i have to tap to highlight, then tap again to get to the next level.

Cowon needs to improve the following (imo):
-Smooth Interface
-More settings (there are some things i'd like to adjust that you simply can't yet.)
-Improve the UI to include some really helpful ID3 playlists such as: Play an album i haven't played before, play my most listened to songs, Shuffle (why they didn't include a shuffle all songs is beyond me, play list maker (where you can make playlists on the fly and save them if you want. How many times have you come accross a song where you wanted it saved for a playlist??). A rating system for the mp3s.

-ID3 is awesome yet for some reason cowon seems to overlook all the possibilities with ID3
-Gapless...seriously it's been like 15 years worth of mp3 players yet no one wants to include gapless beside the ipod. Ultimate mp3 = gapless.

For an ultimate mp3 player it needs work, but it can get there no doubt. The hardware is there, it's the firmware that needs to be improved.

Agree on the gapless. The double tapping is actually preferred by a lot of reviewers as you can read in most reviews as a pro. With the menus zoomed out, single taps would be disastrous as you will NEVER click on what you want unless you pinkie it carefully. It's a preference of style and this is Cowon's- can't blame them for it.

Agree on the touch's touch...its great especially the double touching. What a touchy device lol

Re. Double tapping. The D2 has this too on it's main menu screen, but when navigating lists you can swipe your finger from left to right instead (or right to left to go backwards) which for me is more intuitive than a double tap. Is it the same on an S9?

Anyway, my friend has ordered one and she'll get it Friday so will weigh in with my real world opinions after I've had a chance to have a good play around on it.

EDIT: As an adendum, re the multi touch (or whatever its called) on the ipod touch - is this patented by Apple? As otherwise I don't get why others don't use it. It's very intutive. On Apple computer trackpads as well - the double finger swipe to scroll the page and the double finger tap to Ctrl+Click is so well implemented. I can only guess Apple has it all locked down otherwise everyone would be doing it.

Shuffle (why they didn't include a shuffle all songs is beyond me
The reason for the double tap is because of the extra options at the bottom of the screen that you need to select an item first to be able to use...kinda hard if when you press something it goes to the next submenu.

There is shuffle on all songs. Go into the "Songs" section, play a song, turn on shuffle.

Would be pretty easy for cowon to implement a double tap on/off option in the settings, and let people decide for themselves which way they prefer to do things.

I've got no experience or knowledge of what flash skins can and can't change about a device's interface - could a single tap/double tap option be integrated into a flash skin?

Players owned in order

Creative Jukebox 3 20gb - first and one of the greatest!!

Creative Zen Micro 4gb - still sounds amazing and i had an extra battery so it still runs like new! touch interface still iffy though.

Creative Zen Vision M - nuff said

Meizu M6 SP - 8gb - great player, slick and slick design and interface- great build quality and sounds good - once you mess with the settings. battery life is great too and it is one of the players that needed the least charging despite use! I always thought creative should have built something like this as the successor to the vision m.

Sony NW-s706F, s704F -excellent player! still using it day to day! Hands down THE best small music only mp3 player I have ever used. amazing battery life for such a small player - and great bundled earphones. bummer about sonicstage though.

Zune 30 Gb - love the interface and tight integration with zune software - which does not suck btw. But main thing i love about this player is its beautiful interface, which i think is one of the best and powerful i've used - although it doesnt allow for much customization control a la creative.

Creative Z V plus 4gb - horrible sound quality but cute screen and shape- pretty much scratch proof.
Creative Stone Plus 2gb - gave it away - wasnt impressed.
Sansa Clip 4gb - nice player lots of features but its sound signature wasn't for me. battery life could be better.

Iphone 1g 8gb - touch ipod interface works like a dream- amazing feature set - apps/youtube/ ota wifi podcast downloads :) sounds good, but itunes, limited codec support and lack of hardware buttons keep it from being my music player as well as phone.

Creative Zen X-fi 32gb - amazing sound, beautiful screen great price and finally after all these years 32gb flash!!! for me it was a milestone but battery life sucked, small buttons etc etc :( kept it from reaching greatness imo.

And now Cowon s9

Considering all my players in the past, definitely the best all round player i've owned since the vision m although the UI is a little unrefined/boring- but there is a lot of potential- i'll be looking into the new flash skins when i get some more time. Love the drag/drop video capability!! Lots of options - i love the fact that hold can be set for everything or for touch screen only - so you can use the buttons!

The only nit picky problems i have are that the volume buttons are a little loose compared to the fw rw buttons at the top, and the power slider isnt completely centered so that the red dot behind it shows a little. I'm also a bit worried that the usb cover will become loose over time and start falling off which may get annoying. hopefully the plastic is of good density that will withstand any wear/tear.

Build quality is as luxurious as plastic is going to great. love the soft feel of the back. Its great/solid build quality that beats everything and is equal to the solidly built zune and iphone. Solid player with great screen. I still think the Sony NW-s706F is the best built and most beautiful and luxurious player i've ever seen. A timeless design with a real metal -maybe steel? aluminum? had casing! and a simple screen that blended into its front.

The hardware buttons although nice could have been better placed, and arent as easy to use but workable. i still think cowon should have put a play/menu, fwd and rwd butons on the front face below the screen, they had the space to do so but put the cowon logo there instead. The volume and power/hold button could then have been placed at the top. but they went for a clean design which looks nice.

Sound quality is excellent with my jays q jays - warm like the creative zen series - I really hated the sansa clip- it may have been detailed etc but the treble heavy sound just fatigued my ears.

Another thing is the touch screen is reactive even to clothes etc. Iphone if have my gloves on or touch it with anything but my finger it doesnt react, but the cowons screen does- but i havent taken off the plastic cover yet.

Haven't run down the battery yet but the specs should make this my longest lasting player yet.

all in all its my first cowon and I'm very impressed. I just gave my x fi to my sister, and the only thing i will be replacing the player with in the foreseeable future is the 32gb version http://anythingbutipod.com/forum/images/smilies/smile.gif (ive seen the p3 and sony touch) but maybe the next creative player?

Nice post babu, it's nice to see a positive review from someone that has never had a Cowon before...sometimes people aren't satisfied with there Cowon after owning ipods and things of that nature.

About the red dot, I owned the Cowon D2 for 2 years now and the orange dot showed a little since it was new....also the USB cover well I've owed quite a few Cowons with that type of cover and haven't had a problem with it breaking off.
It's nice to see someone feels the same about the clips sound...I think the clips sound quality has been overblown...to me it sounds to grainy or course sounding...and with my Q-jays it only enhances the graininess. Although I still think it sounds very good.

Ok guys i figured out how to add folders or songs at a time to Music Favorites. I dunno if this is a revelation (it was for me lol) but in the music portion of the player you can only add individual songs to your Music Favorites folder. But if you go to the Root directory of the player where it shows Folders, artists, Albums, Songs, Genres, etc.. and then go the Folders folder, then go to music then you will see the folders as you structured. THERE you can add folders at a time. I have structured my folders to be Artist --> Album.

What is it with cowon and not using ID3. Am i crazy or am i the only one that really thinks a player shines when you use ID3 to it's extent. Why only use parts of ID3 when there is so much more information in each song to do more with? This isn't a complaint, i'm really wondering if i'm just damn picky or something, or if i'm completely nuts here.

My impression of the S9 is: I like it a lot more than my old D2. The build feels solid however not quite as well built as the thick, bricky D2. But to it's advantage it's super thin and light and even with my silicone skin it fits in my pocket with ease. The UI is very good but leaves a lot to be desired, still It's the best i've seen of cowon yet.
Audio quality seems to be very very close to the D2. Somehow, it seems a little warmer than my D2 (i'm using sennheiser px100s), where the D2 feels a little more mechanical. Video is AMAZING. I've thrown every divx/xvid torrent at it so far (standard 700mb files) and it plays it beautifully. Custom themes so far are super cool.. I only have two problems with it and the first one isn't major: 1. It doesn't have as much power as the D2, but that's nothing since I've stopped using high impendance headphones for a long time. 2nd is there is an awful bug that keeps it from continuously playing all your albums when in ID TAG mode. only works in folder mode. i've mentioned this in a couple of posts and opened a ticket at cowon america.
That's about it. Oh and very cool sleek design. I like it better than the touch.

Reviewers have been saying that the S9 is not as sturdy (feeling) as the Samsung P2. Cnet, anythingbutipod.com, and engadget seem to say the same thing. After having played with my brother's iPod Nano 4th Gen I have to say that nothing can feel as cheap as that.

So any have a max number of songs that are allowed on the On-the-fly playlist? Thursday or Friday should be the time I'll pick one up (I got the manager's discount with the store being desperate to make a sale so it comes out to $200... economic trouble pays off I guess.)

I think the max is 256 songs on the playlist, but I could be wrong. I also only recently discovered how to add albums to the playlist, or "favorites". I really do not understand why, when browsing Folder -> Music -> etc. you can add the whole album, but when browsing the regular music structure, you can't...

Any idea how to clear the 'now playing' list? Also, when you start to play the first album, it adds the songs to now playing, but to add subsequent albums, you have to add the first album to favorites, then each album after that.. otherwise, you'll still listen to the first album, but the second, third etc, are in a different list... can be annoying if you're the type of person that queues up a good few albums at a time.. like me :)

As for videos though.... simply, WOW.

You can add folders you've created in your music folder.

To anyone who has the S9...

How does album art look on the S9...is it very detailed...blurry??

I'm talking about really nice album art...and at least 300x300 res...how does it look? I'm really into album art and scanning my covers and enhancing them so they look better.

Anyway of making the album art bigger, so it fills the screen better (like the Touch)?

Yep, a skin to the music screen would make this bigger. Look in the themes section or if you know flash, write your own in your own style.

My friend's S9 arrived today, so I've had a chance to get my hands on it. Here are my first impressions on the limited experience I had of it:

Titanium version looks great, I don't care what people say. On some of the photos the side panels look brownish - they aren't, they're a very classy matt grey, the plastic on the back feels really nice in your palm and the curved back makes it even nicer.

I don't know what reviewers are on about with the "cheap" vibes - it doesn't look or feel cheap in anyway and I'm pretty unforgiving on aesthetics - It just looks incredible.

It's light - when did this arbitrarily become a negative quality in a portable device? Surely it's a plus? I guess since the ipod touch is heavy then it suddenly became a great thing for a device which is supposed to be carried everywhere to weigh your pocket down, because everything apple does must be great right?

There was no music on it but I had a little look at the cover flow. Tapping the next album the animation is smooth, sliding my finger across it I couldn't even tell it was doing anything or not (no album art to judge by obviously) so that needs some work.

The screen is hypnotically beautiful - I played the iamoled pre loaded video and it just looked so colourful and bright.

No chance to really get into the interface, but from brief interactions I can say if you're used to the D2 you'll be in similar territory.

In short - I can't wait to get one of these, it really is a high class piece of kit.
