If you encode your mp3s at 128kbps, it works out to roughtly 1mb/min.

Therefore, 256mb G3 should hold roughly 256 minutes worth of music at 128kbps.

I can hold 49 songs on my G3, 256 MB, with most songs being VBR, and some being 192 kbps.

The answer to the question actually asked is '450' with the earlier firmware and 650 with the newer version. Of course you'd probably haev to encode at very low rate and pick extremely short songs, but that's the absolute limits right now.

In practise, well it depends how good your ears are and what you listen to where. I can get by quite nicely with 48kbps .WMA (VBR) or Q0 .Ogg (~64kbps) .. Q=-1 .OGG would be Ok too except the G3 won't play them. At that rate you'd get ~150-200 average sort or tracks into 256MB (except the capacity is less than 256, of course).
