Okay. This is confusing. We were told by reliable sources that the D3 did indeed exist and would come out soon (this time makes sense) but they released 3 new players.
In your opinions, do you think the S9 is indeed the D3 or there is another player for the D2 sucessor?
According to anythingbutipod or engadget (can't remember) the S9 is meant to be a D2 sucessor. According to Cnet Asia, the D3 still exists even with the S9 release (though it is terribly worded and unclear).
I feel the S9 has a lot of what we were hoping from a D3 sucessor in terms of features (the UI is hopefully improved as well) all that was missing was the SD expansion slot that we were all quite upset about and perhaps the wifi we were hoping it would have. But in big, it wasn't too far off I find but that's only IMO.
So.. is the S9 the D3 you think?
I dunno.... maybe Cowon released the other two daps to test our reaction or something..
So by releasing the s9, they know now how extremely important an sd port would be, and that they need to spice it up (add more features) to win us over (though I'd most likely buy it anyway just because it's the d3 [blush]). They also know that the upgraded looks are greatly appreciated [yes]
And by releasing the o2, maybe they were trying to see if we would like more video functionality and all that (I haven't been keeping tabs on the o2, so I don't know much about it :P).
But this is highly unrealistic and optimistic, because if the d3 had the combined features of the o2 and s9, it would totally kill their sales....
So I think that the d3 will probably be the same size or even smaller than the d2, with a slimmer profile and maybe a few more features that were missing from the d2 (PLAYLISTS??)
..But it's all just conjecture at this point [rolleyes]

well I'm thinking that ths S9 has all the issues of playlist (what issues anyways? I keep hearing about them) and UI fixes so tapping 3 times to do something will no longer be necessary.. etc.
I think overall the S9 is a winner but def not that much of an improvement over the D2 but since I never had a D2 but know about it, I like it. If I had a D2, I probably would not do the switch.

Playlists - doesn't support any playlists such as m3u files etc.
There's a very basic on the go playlist that you can't save but you can't even re-order the tracks.
I'd still like to know what "reliable sources" claimed that the D3 existed?
Perhaps the same ones that said the X5 would support ID3 tag browsing?
Uhh I'm not sure which sources you're referring to as pertaining to the x5 (never been to that part of the forum [unsure]), but there was a post in the Cowon s9 thread, where someone asked a rep from Cowon whether the s9 or o2 were successors to the d2. So, the rep said they are in fact, not. So the existence of the d3 is still up in the air..
However, you'd think that if there was definitely no d3, the rep would have no reason not to tell him so.
So as I said before, it's all conjecture right now [laugh]
Edit: He only asked about the s9, but I doubt the o2 is a successor xD

It would be pretty funny if the O2 is the D2's successor (company just wanted to skip a few letters and keep the number, lol). Overall I'll be waiting for two websites to release a review of the devices before I even bother jumping on the new devices:

ya anythingbutipod do thorough reviews and I'm hoping they can get their hands on it by end september so we can all get ourselves ready to order by october. express shipping? yup yup! But I'd have to see the reviews.. and the player in action before making that last step.
It'd suck to get a S9 then have a D3 come out with the features of the S9 and more like wifi and sd.. would really suck but that's tech. it's always changing.
I have the feeling that the S9 is the D2 successor. I just went ahead and ordered a D2. So that just about assures that they'll introduce a real D3 pretty soon ;-)

...but it will replace the D2 in the Cowon line up....so while it may not be a successor it will be a place holder :)

no, not officially, but it was hinted at and (I think even its existence was confirmed) by reliable source, like ppl from Cnet UK and someone else.. shoot I can't remember anymore, either someone on this forum found info or abi.com

Sorry for yanking you around, I know exactly what you are referring to... and no, a device known as the "D3" was NEVER confirmed... One person at cNet UK mentioned specs for an upcomming Cowon device, coincidentally those specs match the specs of the S9 (what a shocker)
Wait for a D3 if you want, but there is absolutely no telling when it will arrive, or if it will ever be anything more than a prototype...or anything more than an idea...

I know how that sounded >.< I'm already tired from school and I read it so long ago I can't remember the sources. I know there was Nate Lixon (something similar) from Cnet UK and another guy at Engadget, wow that didn't clear anything up, anyways, can't wait to see the S9 in action and GOD I hope I'm not disappointed again (iriver spinn)!!!
For now though, I can look forward to feeding my tech hunger by informing myself on the new nano, which should be announced in the next couple of hours

Well I'll be getting the S9 as soon as I can so will post a video of it straight away, as I'm learning to use it too :) but from the people I've been talking to it's apparently a worthy D2 replacement...time will tell :)

Same here, the S9 looks freakin cool and having to wait for the device is super torture[wacko]. I guess this time around "Good things come to those who wait" rings true in this area [thumbsup]!
It's really sad that the S9 isn't the X5 replacement with a huge amount of storage...why can't Cowon make a dap to compete with the Zune and Classic...can you imagine what a Zune and Classic killer the S9 would be if it had like 120gigs or more of storage.
D3, S9, o2, none of them peak my interest...
Although I'm really exited to see the S9 in action..

lol good looking out, Dominic [laugh] guess there won't be a d3 until we get another announcement or something, so I'll definitely be getting the d3 immediately if the reviews hold up. Also, you said that judging by who you talked to, the s9 was a worthy replacement. Did they mention the interface?? [excited]

Not expressly, but they did say they say "working samples" and that the AMOLED screen was amazing....so... :)

maybe these rumours are getting out of hand?
either way, i'll only consider the S9 if/when it has been reviewed, and if it has DAB as well as FM radio.
otherwise it's a D2 for xmas this year. :)
well, Cowon better make a move about the d3 (if there is one) soon, before they lose that market to the s9, because I doubt people will have the funds to go out and buy a d3 AFTER they just bought an s9...[unsure]

seriously, and the sheer frustration
wait.... I did not know Dom spoke to someone who played with the device! too bad no news on the interface. I'm really curious about this Flash stuff and how it works, I understand you are able to customize and have better apps and games (let's hope Cowon actually develops some or other users develop some...) but I think I'd have to own one and play with one myself to fully understand it...
god can't wait. I hope this wait truly is worth it.
See Wikipedia "Flash Lite" (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flash_Lite) about the D2 scripting language. It's a subset of Macromedia Flash sort of comparable to Javascript. Meh. Once Rockbox is working better you'll be able to customize the D2 UI any way you want. The purpose of a D3 (if one ever appears) has to be to update the D2 hardware, not just the UI.
lol yeah the wait is pretty grueling, but time will pass nonetheless. [laugh]
I'm supposed to get paid alot for doing something in a few weeks (the timing is just great! :D), so I'll just concentrate on that and school, so the time will pass faster, plus I'll have enough money to get the s9 [rolleyes]
I think coming here every day makes it seem alot slower, but I'd HATE to miss out on an update on this hopeful soon-to-be-mine DAP :P

LOL wow ya me too. I am on here way too much I know.. as soon as I get a new player I'm satisfied with (S9?) then I probably won't be here as often, well not on the forums anyways
I'm just waiting for the day of S9 news or hands-on or release date.. something!

btw, does anyone know what version of flash the s9 uses? if it's not flashlite, then we need not worry as much about videos for the average person ( you'd be able rip vids straight off of youtube as flvs), plus it'll play better games (linerider..) :jamming:

Someone some time ago mailed cowon and asked them about S9 being the D3 and the cowon staff answered that the S9 wasnt the D3 and we should see a D3 later, but I wouldnt trust that. Cowon staff says strange thing sometimes, but mostly the say nothing:P

The D2 has playlist support. You just connect it to the PC in MTP mode, go to the MUSIC folder, highlight the songs you wantin your playlist, right click them, chose "create playlist", and hello playlist.
Anyway the solution to the D3/S9 problem is simple. Wait for the D3 until the next CES and if it isn't out by then go ahead and get the S9, by then it might have had a price drop or a storage boost or something.
That's true, I had forgotten about the MTP. But you can't access MTP if you're on korean firmware, which gives you access to flashskins and the dictionary.

Even if I think the S9 is sooo dam sweeet, I must rule it out since it lacks a SD card slot which I find fundamental.
The thing is that the D3 had to come out (rumors...but somehow confirmed by an editor on Cnet.co,uk) on August 2008, then October/December, and now there's no word about it (not even if a D3 is indeed in the works).
I would hate to get the D2 now and see, after a couple of months, the D3 in stores. I mean, maybe the S9 was originally the D3 and then they decided to make some adjustments and keep a new device for the future (D3)...or they might just want to concentrate on the O2 and S9 and after a bit release the D3 so to maximize potential buyers....who knows.

D2 won't let you down, as it works splendid compare to other players of the market. It is a unique piece of hardware difficult to match for all the things it offers (and more to be expected from Rockbox)
S9 is quite expensive compared to D2 now (they have talked around 229€ 8Gb from a dutch site) but maybe sound quality is worth it.
My Final opinion: Don't wait for the D3. Wait for some reviews of the S9, some comparisons between D2 & S9, price, and you will finish enjoying what you get. D2 is a winner, S9 lets wait and see

I am so attracted by the D2 that I have already put away the money to buy it :D ...do you guys think that the S9 could make drop the price of the D2 (which is already a good deal considering the device).
EDIT: I guess that you guys are right. I'll just get the D2 and when and IF the D3 is released I'll consider to sell the D2 and get the new one. :D
