Active Sync 4.5 doesn't retrieve Q5W info

I'm new to active sync, but I want to install a few apps on my Q5W that need it.

I installed Active Sync 4.5, set the Q5W from mass storage mode to active sync mode, and plugged it in to the PC via USB.

Active sync connects to the device, but doesn't retrieve any information for it. When I try to install a program that uses auto sync to install from the PC to the Q5W, I get an error that My mobile device information cannot be retrieved, and shuts down.

In the active sync GUI, it shows no info for the Q5W, only that a mobile device is connected.

What am I doing wrong? Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

in hoping that u r not going to b using Vista because i don't think it's compatible with it...try this version (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=7269173a-28bf-4cac-a682-58d3233efb4c&displaylang=en). I used that and i got through with installing .exe files using active sync.

No dice. I uninstalled Active Sync 4.5, installed 4.2, and the same thing happens. No info retrieved.

This is getting a bit maddening. Any ideas?

This is getting maddening. No matter what I try, I can't get ActiveSync to retrieve information from my Q5W. I have tried:

* Uninstalling/reinstalling Activesync.
* Ver. 3.8 and 4.5
* Setting up the ports in my firewall per ActiveSync help file
* Turning the firewall off completely
* Turning the antivirus off
* Allowing ALL activity from the activesync apps in the firewall.

Every time, ActiveSync shows connected, with no info from the device. When I try to install an app via activesync, I get a message that info from my device could not be retrieved.

I'm pulling my hair out! Any ideas would be appreciated.

hmmm i'm using 4.2 and have no problems at all.
However and this may be a silly suggestion - have you switched on the active sync feature on the Q5W?
Its under the system tab under utilities. My q5W defaults to the mass storage drive setting each time you switch it on. so after you switch it on you have to tell it to become an active sync device. Once you do that it connects no problem...

I couldn't get my device to connect until i work out this... doh!!!

doh.. just re-read your post and you say your switching the q5w to active sync.
What firmware are you running? 1.46? and what application software are you running? upgrading to the latest might sort it out...

Mine works with 4.5 just fine, I have the latest firmware...... oh and also, turn the unit on before plugging into the pc, unlike you do with mass storage so

-turn on the unit
- switch to active sync under options on ur q5w
- plug it into the pc
- on active sync program on ur pc, u can click explore, and if you can explore your files, copy them over and stuff it should be working

Hi, thanks for the replies.

It must have been a configuration problem. My HD crashed the other day, and after reformatting and reinstalling XP Pro, Activesync works with my Q5W.

I have constant problems keeping my PC straight, with the wife and daughter always downloading stuff to try. Something someone put on it must have corrupted the OS so that ActiveSync couldn't communicate.
