I am about to purchase my first player with a $400 gift credit from my job for Amazon.com. I would like video play capability but am not confident enough to void my warranty with unauthorized firmware. After looking over all of the reviews and discussions I can find, I am 95% sure I'm getting the X5 despite minor concerns over screen quality, mini-docks, and file trees.

I have been looking at Amazon's German site to anticipate what will be coming soon to the US. The X5 will be available soon in 20, 30, and 60 gb, the X5L in 20, and 30.

THE QUESTION:
How many gbs are practical to manage. My impulse is to get a 60 for status, but I suspect that 30 would be more than enough to handle my music and photos along with some audio books. Are there drawbacks to having too much memory?

AND:

Is it worth sacrificing the 4 mm of sleekness for the amazing battery life of the X5L. I dont do international travel and could probably by accessories with the savings to accommodate such circumstances.

Both concerns are probably too personal for definite answers, but opinions are appreciated.

1.)depends on how much music you have, or want to have on your player.
with the 30 gb you hava ~600 full Albums in your pocket or 7500 songs.
For my thats enough (and i couln't wait for the 60 gb one) although i got about 50 gb of mp3s on my PC. But there's always sound you never listen to, is there?
2.)Normal Battery is very good. Unless you have to pass a desert, I can't see why to buy the big one...
thats my opinion

3.) The L or 60 gb version will be quit thick. with the hump 2.4 cm. Thats just to much for me.
Why does Cowon need 4 mm for this display? (which is one of the best displays i've ever seen, also in the sun )

Thanks. I think your right about the L. The site I saw had the 60 at the same size as the 30. It was probably wrong. I'll investigate further.

Thanks again.

ZAM: I have the M3 and was considering the M3L or the M3 40 gig.
With the M3 i've gone 4-5 days with 3-4 hours use everyday and not have to charge.
I initially thought I'd have more music but I'm using only 5 or 6 gigs and still don't listen to eveything. I have probably 20+ gigs of music total but haven't put it all into the player yet.

If you are not going to be away from a charger for more than a couple of days, I'd say get the bigger HD with the regular battery life. My $0.02.

I'd count your albums/music and work out the maths.

30Gb will be fine for me and I want the L version. The size is also fine for me.

p.s - It's DAP not PAP

Digital Audio Player better than Portable Audio Player. :)

Considering PAP means rubbish, trash, crap etc . . . I'd say YES :D . It also means nipple apparently:

Amazon US seems to have the 20 and 30 in stock already. So you don't have to wait, unless you decide you want a 60 or an L.

Actually, they are taking preorders in US. Geramny seems to have all versions ready for shipping. Oddly, the 30 gb x5 & x5L are the same price. 389Euros. Error?

Probably they did a mistake, X5 30 should be € 389,00 and X5L 30 roughly € 429,00 both with VAT included!
