We are bringing a new case into the market in June.

I've uploaded some photos of a final sample for your viewing pleasure into the iAudiophile Gallery. I'm not allowed to advertise in the forums without permission so I won't post pricing details and such.

Enjoy the photos!

Jeff, this case looks amazing, I really didn't want to shell out US $40 for the noreve case, which seems to add more bulk then this one.

The Cowon case has more asthetic appeal but this one has a spot for charging on the botton with out removing the case. Cool! Though I have a cradle so no case would be small enough.

That's interesting... i don't care for the white stitching on the stock Cowon case so that's why i designed this one without it...

Awesome Jeff! I will be sure to keep up with it on MisticAudio.. Thanks for designing it! I agree with you, I would much rather have all black than the white stitching.. A++

I may be just out or maybe without taste. Maybe you hate me. But is it really necessary to buy a case because the white stitching is not so cool?
The player looks shit inside a case anyways. It's not comparable to the beauty of it's naked body (hihi).

I don't have my unit yet. But don't you agree that maybe the x5 will also do it without a case? Of what I understood out of exitys review it's almost resistant to any kind of scratches. Probably the screen is made of glass and the solid metal texture?...

Well. Everyone has his or her own style. That's just what I think, honestly knowing very little about cases.

No hate involved... you pay $300-$400 on a nicely designed, well manufactured DAP. The first time you "accidentally" bang it on something or god forbid, drop it and you'll be saying to yourself "why didn't I spend $30 on a case to protect the screen" or "damn, that scratch is ugly, wish i'd bought that case"

That's the only reason that most of us use cases. We agree that the unit looks better "naked" but you need protection for electronic devices.

I like the case. I wish it were like an iSkin'esque one. One made out of like silicone/latex ish. I like the rubber.

Thanks for spending time to get a case for us.

I think everyone here agrees on the fact that DAP's look much better without anything on them (naked) but jeff makes a strong, strong point.. You drop it once and you get a nasty scratch on it (Even though the x5 body is made of some kind of metal/alluminum) and wish you had bought an uber-nice nice case from MisticAudio! ^_^

BTW Jeff, your case does a much better job on the area around the LCD.. The Cowon case looked a bit rounded, lol..

I agree with others here that it looks better than the Cowon or Noreve cases, but you seem to have left the bottom corners unprotected! Those are the most likely part to get damaged. Any chance you can modify it still so that the bottom extends out past the corners like in the standard M3 case? The holes don't have to be completely closed if that makes the construction easier.

OT- misticaudio, is there any chance you could reply to the thread I started over here: http://www.iaudiophile.net/forums/viewtopic.php?id=1907 I thought I remembered you saying that you had gotten the Cowon FM transmitter as part of a bundle with your X5. Thanks!

AFireInside

I don't think the corners are going to get banged up easily.. I mean it's a possibility but hmmm..

05-26-2005, 22:06
Which part is most likely to hit the concrete first if you drop it? I noticed that Archos even puts rubber feet at the corners of it's players.

I've dropped my Palm (forgot it was in my shirt pocket when bending over) and cell phone (fell out of it's case when running) more times than I care to admit, and the corners have taken the most damage. On the other hand, the case should hopefully stay clipped to the belt, so protecting the corners won't be as necessary.

misticaudio
05-26-2005, 22:10
unfortunately when you're working with Leather the corners are usually exposed unless you get into a rigid style case like the Vaja I-Volution. Even the Vaja Classic cases have exposed corners.

AFireInside
05-26-2005, 22:24
There seems to be enough padding in front of the corners of the DAP which in theory would hit before the dap corners do.. I think it is well protected.. ;)

Jeff, If you want to work the niche of a niche market, you also might want to make a case in which the "color sound" portion on the edge of the screen is covered by the case. There seem to have been quite a few complaints about that tagline and numerous people who'd pay for a way to tastefully cover it up. :)

Like Jeff has already stated, he can't talk about prices on these forums without first consulting and gaining permission from the Admin.. Im sure if you PM'ed him and asked nicely though he would tell you.. ^_^

I would much rather have the Color Sound logo on there.. I don't know why but I like the little ring that it's got to it even if it makes zero sense, lol.. It also changes color in the light, pretty.. ^_^

I have had quite a few players and I must say that even if you DON'T drop your player you wont have it cuddled in you r had all day. It will be in you bag or pocket on the desk where you can push it aside in a hurry and it will scratch on the surface of the desk. You rest things on top of it, you drop it accidently, things fall out of your hand and fall on top of it, it gets snagged by things (the joystick on my X5 is catching on my pocket when I slide it in), as they say sith happens. :-) Though the player is beautiful, a case is a must if you want it to stay lookign cool. Take a page out of the iPod. The chrome back is very scratchable, more so than the x5. And....I am yet to see very many with out a case. It's the best thing for the player. Of course on the train ride home I take mine out of the case for a little public drooling by the iPod idiots looking on. (and ther are always 3 or 4 on the train)

The reason I ask is because that is the main thing I would want a case to protect, since it's probably the most vulnerable to scratches/other damage.

Probably you are right misticaudio. Sure the unit is so valuable you wouldn't want it to be scarred.
Maybe I'm just detracting myself from the fact that I live in Austria/Europe and that I'm probably never going to have the chance to get my hands on one of your leather protection thingies. Importing still isn't easy.

I'm sorry but this has scratch resistant paint I thought. Wouldn't this repel those unwanted scratches from coins or watever else is in your pocket. also, if you are slow enough to drop your dap you deserve it to be scratched up. i must be anal cause i wouldnt drop any one of my daps on my bed...any who i think all one would need is a plastic screen protector for thier screen to keep those nasty scratches that are blatant as soon as any sign of light it present. (i hate those) there are so many people out there that love cases and i just can't justifying making my player a beast when it holds such beauty. the x5 is a work of art, why put a bag over it?

kero
05-28-2005, 01:37
Putting a bag over it keeps it a work of art when showing it to friends. Just knowing that you can turn your bag into a work of art is better to me then having it get scratched up in a couple of months.

I'll save Jeff the trouble of emailing the same answers to lots of people; here are his answers to my enquiry:

"The MisticAudio case for the X5 will be $29.95US. At introduction, I will be offering free standard shipping to Europe via Air Letter Post or Global Priority Mail so you won't have to worry about shipping costs. Normally shipping is $10US - $25US depending on the method you choose. Currently I accept PayPal, Western Union, or an International Postal Money Order.
At this time there is not an X5L version, simply because the numbers won't justify the cost."

How much bulk does this case add? Also, the body of the x5 is very scratch resistant. I've tried to scratch it and nothing happened. (!!!). Frankly, I dont think a case is necessary except for screen protection- which can be added, though the bundled ones are total POS's.

BTW: The case looks really nice!

Folks... do a little investigating on your own before deciding but for the price and the minimal added bulk (see photos in gallery) no matter how "scratch resistant" you think the player is, a case is a worthy investment for a $300 + piece of electronic equipment.

OKay, even though the actual material is made of metal and is scratch resistent, people saying that when they scratched the player themselves and had no damage are lying. I ordered my X5 the day it came out on monday with regular shipping and had it for a few weeks now. 1 cm down and .5 cm to the right of the control knob is a place where my player has already taken damage. I cant exactly call it a scratch, but the paint itself is chipped off and there is a small mark of silver revealed. I've never dropped or scratched the player. This was normal wear and tear. So remember, even though the material is scratch resistent, it doesnt mean the paint will not be damaged. I'm sure if u used a pen or a knife to simulate a scratch, you'd result in a silver line and youd also done something really stupid to prove a point. So people that say they tried scratching their player and resulted in no damage, please spare us your bullshit.

Conclusion - buy the case

MisticAudio is Jeff from MisticRiver, he is not out to scam anyone!! He's done amazing work providing the iRiver community with a fantastic website as well as his online shop that has shipped high quality accessories all over the world. How about some background. As stated my name is Jeff Hill. I run the MisticRiver website and the MisticAudio estore. I've been running MisticRiver since November 2003 and it is and has been my goal to provide iRiver users with comfortable place to hang out, full of information and support. It's also been my goal to work to provide more choices for iRiver users regarding accessories for their players. I believe i've been instrumental in that, working with iSkin to introduce the H100 Series iSkin, working with Vaja to introduce the Classic line for the H100/300 Series, introducing the OUTRO brand into the U.S., importing and selling the ever hard to find H300 Series LCD Remotes and now the H10 FM Transmitters.

For a short time I was working with Noreve and did import a small amount of their cases into the U.S. for resale. There were issues however with their cases. Pricing was too high and the style of case was not user friendly for the majority of U.S. users and a lot of Intl. users who prefer a "play-thru" type case.

BIGtrouble77
06-04-2005, 18:34
I don't really care but they do look identical from the photos. If I was Jeff I'd be pissed at Noreve for selling the design that I was an instrumental part of to my competitors.
