View Full Version : voice recording quality
For anyone that has a new x5. I'm considering getting one of these babies. How's the sound quality of the voice recordings? And what are the possible bitrates that you may record at? I have read that for line-in recordings, you can go as high as 320 kbps. Is this the same with voice recording? Thanks for any responses.
I can speak for the voice recording. Its pretty good. Just don't speak too close to the mic. And don't move around when recording. You'll be able to hear everything. For voice recording, you can record up to 128kbps. As for line in...never tried it. Sorry dude. And the highest bitrate to record is shoot...I frogot.
If you want the best quality you should get an externally powered mic for lin in recording. The built in mic can only be so good in that tiny space. But it depends on what you want to use it for, it should be fine for most uses.
So to confirm, voice recording is up to 128kbps...line in? How would the voice recording function be for recording live shows? Thanks for the responses.
I think I read somewhere, that somebody recorded a live concert having an m3 in his pocket...and I think, just using the internal mic...What would you guys say about that idea....would it be possible to record acceptable quality bootlegs with the x5/m3?
My experience with build in microphones so far (on an iRiver340) - they cannot handle high volumes very well. They are voice mics. I turned the mic sensity down to 3 and tried to record rehearsal with Automatic Gain Control on the iRiver and the sound was awfully distored. I have to admit it was very loud!! I recorded an acoustic concert and it was ok but not great.
I don't expect more performance from the X5, I think iRiver build in better mics than Cowon already. If you want to record in an loud environment you probably have to use an external mic.
The iRiver is the only DAP I know which comes with a build in Mic Amplifier (line in = Mic preamp). If I have to carry an external mic anyway I might as well get a mic amplifier which you can get with nice features (clipping warning etc)
