View Full Version : Updating themes (non-flash)
How does one update a theme for a new version of the firmware? I was using 2.51 with the MoreMono theme. I've upgraded to 3.53 and I would like to attempt to bring MoreMono up to date (tried the most current version for kicks ... bad idea).
If I succeed, I promise to share!
It might be worth a shot emailing the makers of the MoreMono theme to see if they've created one for the 3.53?
i'm not sure if dfkt is willing to do this. he doesn't seem to like 3.53(dfkt, if i'm wrong shoot me ^^)

Hmm.. Very interesting question..
I read somewhere in this board, that they have to convert their themes, for a firmware... is that right? And if its right, whats that for a converter?
Let me clarify: I am not asking for MoreMono's author to update his theme. I am asking for the procedure to update a theme for a new firmware so I can do it myself.

The best way I think is to publish a transcription method.
Editing on 2008-01-04:
MaxSt had post new tools today, it is now very easy and quick to translate a theme for another firmware !
New method to transcribe a theme for another firmware:
1 - dowload here new tools to do it, they have same name than before, but are realy easier to use:
- New D2toTGA (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2883&d=1209146358)
- New TGAtoD2 (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2886&d=1209173791)
2 - Copy in a folder (folder1) the original "D2N_rs.bin",
and the "D2N_rs.bin" from the theme downloaded in another folder (folder2).
3 - Copy D2toTGA and execute it, in folder 2.
A lot of pictures will be created.
4 - Copy pictures from folder 2 to folder 1 (copy only pictures, do not copy D2N_rs.bin).
5 - Copy TGAtoD2 and execute it in folder 1.
And that's it ! Now you have just to copy the changed "D2N_rs.bin" from folder 1 to the D2 root, and restart it !
(MaxSt had a published a new D2Screen (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=2667&d=1203493572) too, to have a preview of the theme.
If you have a changed "D2N_font.bin" in the same folder, it will show the theme with this font)
Just to show you how these new tools are a very goud news,
I keep on this thread the old method to translate themes :
Old method to transcribe a theme for another firmware:
(With tools I use: "ACDsee" and "Photoshop" but you can use others tools, like "The Gimp" and "Irfan View")
I use "D2toTGA (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=117901&postcount=10)" with a "made-by-user" theme, and the original theme of firmware I want use with it.
I compare pictures with Acdsee, in opening 2 windows.
- Most of pictures have the same name, same size (in pixels), and same use, I just copy them.
- A few pictures must be resized and renamed (menu icons only, 80X100 in 2.xx fw, 64X100 in 3.xx fw).
I edit one in Photoshop and make a script for others.
I "record on" original firmware pictures, with the right tga number (I use ACDsee to verify the right number).
- A lot of pictures, at the end of the list, have just to be rename (a few one by one, most of them by series) :
- For renaming one by one, I open in Photoshop and record on.
- I search series which are similarly in order in both versions.
One by one, I copy series in a third folder, I use ACDSee to rename them with a batch.
Then I cut and copy them in "the original fw" folder.
At the end, I use "TGAtoD2 (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=123017&postcount=104)" and "D2screen (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=133377&postcount=198)" to verify the work.
With use, it take 15 minutes by transcription.
When I have transcribe a theme, I prefer post a message to his author, with a download link,
to propose to him to publish new versions at the same place than the first one(s).
Feel free to backpost to me this method, after tested it, having supplemented my possible neglects, and corrected my errors of English.
Happy new year everybody !
Rigobert.
Thanks Rigobert. I'll give it a shot. BTW, your English is not that bad! Better than many of my fellow Americans, actually.

Heh, I just stumbled across this thread. Unfortunately you're right - I don't like things that destroy my D2... ;)
What Rigobert said is very reasonable. It took me ~15 minutes to convert my MoreMono theme from 2.50b to 2.51. Just a bit of organized thinking and renaming. (I used IrfanView's thumbnail option to keep an overview over the changed filenames.)
Maybe 2.54 will not mess up my D2, so there might be a MoreMono for that firmware. :)

Here's MoreMono for 2.54: http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showpost.php?p=148804&postcount=37
Does this updating method work for converting 2.xx or 3.xx themes to 4.xx? Or is that more complicated?
I'm a DAB owner, and wondered if I'd be able to update some of the themes apart from the few already available on these forums for 4.53 - though Cassini's Utopia theme is lovely. Thanks!
Yes, it should be possible. New method was designed to be universal.
But test it with D2screen, before uploading to the player.
hmm, might be stupid question. but where can i get original D2N_rs.bin file?
cant find it in cowon..
It's one of the files in the firmware zip file... look in folder 2.

rigobert explains how to convert themes. That's not what you need.

So download any theme for 2.54 or 2.55 or 2.57 and copy it to the player.
There is a How To sticky on how to install themes [wink].
