when i drag my files over to my x5, they're all lower case . . . but when i browse them on the x5, the first bunch of them are in all caps, and then the ones that are lowercase are listed after that group . . .

any ideas?

Probably because capital letters are lower in ASCII value than lower case letter... something like that, i guess, but I wouldn't know.

i am having the same problem, its extremely annoying!

it seems to happen on folder names that are under 8 Characters, that are only one word, and that started in all lowercase. for example, the folder "classics" shows up as "CLASSICS", whereas "Dance" shows up as "Dance".

i like everything consistant, so the annoying capitalization not to mention that fact that it messes up the alphabetical order is frusterating. anyone else having this issue besides summerblink and i?

any ideas to fix? i see nothing in the settings. plz no silly responses like, "well just capitalize the first letter of all your folders". ideally, some real fix would be nice!

I think windows creates the all caps filenames as a "feature". So that's where they come from. Sorry, I don't have a suggestion of how to fix it aside from editting in another OS. I'll look into it when I get mine (I use 2K).

im not sure what you mean by windows creating all caps... when i browse the X5 in explorer, the folders appear normally. its only in the actual X5 interface that they change case and sort.

any else having this problem??
is it standard or is something screwy with my configuration?

This is Windows. Windows (any version since Windows95) displays letters according to rules - so sometimes what you see is not what you have.
Everybody praises Windows. I don't. This is just one little reason.
Solution:
1) If you want to have control over your files use another OS.
or
2) Discover the hidden Windows mechanics so you can figure out how to name files under Windows without Windows screwing it up for you.

It's because as Tja says they're TRUE 8.3 filenames (8 letters + extension). There is an option in Windows to change this though. Back in the days before Windows 95 (on PC's) files were restricted to 8 characters + 3 for the extension, this in some ways is still true.

Download "Tweakui" for Windows XP (or whatever version) from Microsoft's website. It's contained in this program. Be careful though as you can also tweak lots of other things also.

You should also be able to rename DANCE to Dance (you may have to rename it to something completely different and then back again: Dance). It's because the folder is actually DANCE all along but Windows Explorer is changing for you as it looks nicer. It looks like the X5 doesn't do this.

i downloaded TweakUI, but I can't find this option you speak of . . . where is it?

I'm sure it's in it somewhere. I've just had a look and I can't find it either sorry.

I "could" be mistaken so sorry if I've wasted your time. The other option will work and is better really anyway.

i am having the saaame problem and it is beyond annoying. half of my folders show up in all caps, half display correctly.

i can't figure out why they would be like that. some of these folders are three+ years old. some of these old folders display correctly some do not, also, some newly created folders display correctly and some do not.

like others have said before, it's extremely annoying and frustrating because my carefully organized files are NOT ORGANIZED.

has anyone come up with a fix???

***

i just did some checking, made some completely new folders, and like someone previously said this problem only occrus when folders are 8 letters in length or less and are made of a single word.

I'm going to update the firmware in hopes that this fixes the problem.

this is reeeealy crappy and very annoying. i can't for the life of me understand why one word folders containing eight or less letters should display differently than any other.

This problem came up on the eng.iaudio.com forum. It happens when the filename is eight or less characters as mat said.

Yes, it is annoying. Try adding an apostrophe at the end of any filename with eight or less characters.

This happened to me, and annoyed me too as I couldnt work out what the hell was going on..

I found a solution which is to basically rename all your folders so that the *first letter* is capitalised. A bit of a pain but it seemed to do the job.

This seems to force the X5 to recognise the upper/lower case distinction.

firmware update sure doesn't solve the problem. boo

it also doesn't matter if the files came from windows xp or 2k boo

apostrophes, renaming folders......I appreciate the tips guys, I really do,

but I'm really disappointed in cowon for letting this happen. for a 300+ dollar player i find this unacceptable. i really love my x5 on all other counts but this 8 letter filename problem is like a kick below the belt.

I haven't had a single problem... then again, I know how to capitalize the first letter of words.

I guess this is a lesson that proper English would've been something worth learning in school ;)

these are file names, not formal papers or letters. sorry if i think i shouldn't have to rename my files to be listed alphabetically. a comes before b, even if it's an A. no?

Cīmon, if you are the kind of person who praises Windows, you are more likely being a happy iPod owner.

upping this old issue. anyone found a fix besides making the first letter a capital? friends say im obsessive compulsive... all my letters are lower case and it really irritates me to have anything out of the ordinary.

there are newer threads on this issue than this one, but no. it's a bug in the x5. it shouldn't be too hard to write a script or a small program to just rename your files. or you could download some more robust app, like media tagger or tag & rename. i wrote an app like 6 years ago to make it all lowercase when i was into that. Now I'm proper case all the way.
