The Working List
----------------

Avast 4HPC (www.avast.com) it runs and makes the virus scan but it gives an error about a missing "toolhelp.dll" and i can't update it. Fixed Check here: (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/showthread.php?t=18645)

CenetviewersMIPS (http://hpcmonex.net/izemize/cenetviewersMIPS.zip) Great stuff! It runs Perfect!

eZdownload v1.15 (http://www.freewareppc.com/) It runs nicely! I test it and i download a file just fine!

Taskmaster v2.0 (http://www.truedimensions.com/taskmaster/download.htm) Great tool! Runs with no Problem!

The Plus! Pack v3.0 from Microsoft (http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=6A499BCB-46DC-48F2-BB68-484415DF7B21&displaylang=en) is has also some nice tools that works. The tools i found more usefull are: Resource Meter, Pocket Paint, Squares (gives an error when i close it, but it runs fine!) and Image Viewer (runs, but is not so good viewer)

Total Commander. (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm) Works but it doesn't have exit button!?

Nice stuff!

Looks like we are following the same path. I have your working ones also and some emulators and ebook readers. I have put together a complete working set of mfc dlls that will play the older hpc and ppc apps. Also have a large list of other dlls that are tested to work for various apps. Some were very hard to find so I will get them packaged up tomorrow and post it.

Have you checked out peinfo.exe? The import tab on that tells you what dll's an app requires so you can mix and match dlls to suit the app! [thumbsup]

Got yamece, morphgear, and scrummvm 1.0 working. I really want mamece but I think we are stuck until someone gets a copy of gx.dll working. [no] I will package up the various mips gx.dll I have with a small readme...I have spent hours on this but hopefully someone can succeed where I have failed.

The other thing I really want is a .lit ebook reader. The old version of microsoft reader works but is horrible. Bummer I might have to convert all my .lit books to mobi format.

I sum up my posts from the other thread:

Working:

Mobipocket reader works (tried the 4.9 version)

Total commander for pocket pc - mips version (http://www.ghisler.com/pocketpc.htm) - you have to hide the taskbar to see all options

Xnview (image viewer) seems to work, but somehow I got into a screen I couldn't escape and had to restart - (http://www.xnviewpocket.org/home_uk.php)

Pocket QuickView v2.0.13 (http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=368)

Calc98: the WinCE 3.0 MIPS version works -

VOLUME II

The Working List [thumbsup]
----------------

ArtSKeyBoard for HPC v2.0 (http://www.artsoft.ru/eng/artskbhpc.htm) works great but it's Demo!

mips211.zip (http://www.freeweb.hu/izemize/hpc.php) some dll files that some old programs need to run.

Pocket Powerpoint Editor (http://rapidshare.com/files/79834510/Pocket_PowerPoint_Editor_CE_2_0_mips.exe.html) Works! you need IMGDECMP.DLL(from mips211) and MFCCE20.DLL (http://rapidshare.com/files/79841555/MFCCE20.zip.html) in the install dir...

WtalkCE (http://rapidshare.com/files/79833685/WtalkCE.zip.html) Yes! it works! You need CESHELL.DLL and IMGDECMP.DLL (from mips211) in the install dir... I can download big files! But i can't download from Rapidshare and similar pages because it gives "post-request without content?" i think is a bug...

kaffeCE JVM. (http://www.rainer-keuchel.de/wince/kaffe.html) I can install it but i'm not sure if it works?! i tried it only with opera-mini-4.0.9800-advanced-int that it doesn't work...)

CrE-ME412_MIPS_CE40_HPC JVM. (http://www.nsicom.com/) (Same as above...)

Resco Keyboard Pro for Pocket PC v4.33 (http://rapidshare.com/files/79838204/RKeyboard_p.exe.html) It works with the "simple" skin but i have to copy the file RkbSvr.dll to \windows\ each time i want to use this keyboard!? (I need some tool to write to the ROM or i must change something in the registry but i haven't find it yet...)

1. make install
DON'T choose it as default input method because in the next boot you will have no keyboard! Choose the simple skin!
2. copy the new files from \program file\ (the Resco Dir) to \hard disk\Program files and from \windows\ to \hard disk\windows\ (the new files in windows folder are RkbSvr.dll, RKeyboard.htm, RUpdate.exe, and Resco Keyboard Pro.unload). (i copy this folder "AppMgr" in \hard disk\windows\ to be sure that it will work.)
3. change the paths in the registry: HLM\SOFTWARE\RESCO add to each path the "\Hard disk\" for example "UK@\Hard Disk\Program Files\Resco\Languages\UK.map" you have to change all paths in Languages (change at least the layouts you will use.) and in Skins. and the "HLM\SOFTWARE\Apps\Resco Keyboard Pro" entry has some paths i have change.
4. copy IMGDECMP.DLL(from mips211) and MFCCE20.DLL (http://rapidshare.com/files/79841555/MFCCE20.zip.html) to \hard disk\windows
5. Each time you boot you must copy RkbSvr.dll from \hard disk\windows to \windows
(6. The software is Demo.)

* (if your keyboard is lost do step 5. If you haven't change the registry entries step 3 you must copy \hard disk\program files\Resco to \program files\Resco and from control panel => input panel select Resco Keyboard and uncheck the "use it as default input method" option.Reboot and Done!)

To all;

I live in Canada and got a Q5W for Christmas. It is an awesome upgrade to an A2.

I finally got ScummVM 0.1.0 (Mips) www.scummvm.org working and installed all the old classics games working without any issues. I tried version 0.71.0 and had some issues with some ini files and couldn't get it to work properly. I found the latest version on a Korean webpage and everything works AOK!!!

The games work great and there is no lag to them. I will post some pictures of the games I'm playing.

The Windows 5.0CE O/S is fine and you can sync with MS ActiveSync 4.5.

Currently I don't have any issues once you upgrade the Firmware to 1.43.

Tango out,

I downloaded the
Microsoft File Viewers For COWON Q5W.cab

Can someone tell me what to do with it...how to install it.

It would be great if we had a sticky on intalling different types of files for CE newbies.

thanks

EDIT:

Ok, now I get it.
Copy the the cab file to your Cowon hard disk.
Run it.
An install window opens and prompts you to install to \program files.
This is the wrong program files location.
There are 2 program files folders. One on the hard disk and one in rom.
You need to backtrack to "hard disk\program files" and install your programs there or they will vanish after each reboot.
Once installed, the original cab file is deleted.

Guys,

I know we're all testing different apps. And we all know the installation of these often requires experimentation.

So, please tell us the procedure for apps you've been successful with.

1) is the install just copying to q5 and opening the cab or the exe?
OR
2) does the install require active sync?

PLUS
any additional steps like copying other files.

Also please be specific which version of the app you've had success with-

the version, and the specific processor type- MIPs or mips 3000 or mips 4100
or HPC, etc.

Just include as much as you know and any problems you had.

That way we can all save time and frustration.

Thanks very much!

P.s. anybody found a pim that will sync with outlook?

Everyone here seems to get excited about the fact that they've found some third party app that was created years ago that will work on a $450.00 & upwards of $600.00 device that just came out in the states a few months ago.

I for one, feel duped that there is no software support for the Cowon Q5W or that it doesn't come with even a decent email app. I realize that most people consider it to be a superior player due to the audio and video capabilities, but one of the other features that it touts as a selling point is it's internet capabilities and to be honest, most of the sites I have visited require something or another that the IE browser that came with it doesn't have or is out dated, beit the Flash component or active x.

I just bought this thing and I already feel like it's outdated. Does anyone know of any applications that can solve these issues or is everybody here waiting for Cowon to come to the rescue with some firmware update that's not forthcoming. This seems ridiculous.

Believe me, I hope that I'm wrong and that there is a way to fix the problems that keep me from liking this player, but paying $550.00 for what basically amounts to an portable mp3 player (however grand it may sound) is not my idea of a good way to spend my money.

Someone help me out here if you can, please.

While I agree that there might have been more functionality implemented by Cowon (and I do believe that they will continue to tweak things) there are plenty of way to ensure that you can have the functionality you want. For starters, I've found that having all of my email accounts forward copies to my gmail, which is full functional with the Q5W.

And to correct you, at the very least the device amounts to a portable VIDEO player. And to be honest it has already proven to be a boon to me. When I travel, or visit family, I can bring "Touchy Sr." with me and watch all my favorite movies on a nearby TV. I don't even have to get up to change movies since the remote works so well. Perhaps you were looking for something else when you picked out the Q5W but I'm incredibly happy with mine.

You're lucky, we pay even more in the UK, as we do for most gadgets...
Seriously, though, what do you expect from the Q5? I agree there are rough (and very annoying) edges - the one that bugs me most is the downloading limitation with IE; to reach the final stage of a rapidshare etc download only to be told IE can't download due to lack of space is taking the p*ss!! And, the way you end up leaving the cowon shell every time you quit a windows app and have to relaunch it is quite laughable. Can you imagine Apple releasing a product which acts like that?

However, contrary to how it sounds, I love my Q5. I came to it from Archos (specifically the 704wifi). I used to respect that company, now they seem to have sold out to greed. The 704 (a 2007 product) has been abandoned with loads of flaws (especially the embedded Opera browser), and Archos has locked up the Linux OS so tight it (almost) can't be hacked, let alone allowing you to instal things freely. It's a completely dead end product.

I love the Q5 because it isn't dead end. It's a very good music, video, and photo device. It's got an excellent USB host, superb screen, decent sound, and reasonable wifi. And, IE, imo, is actually a reasonable browser excepting the download limitation. It seems to work really well on most sites.
When you factor in the ability to instal your own apps (even if they are a bit scarce, hopefully this will change) you have a pretty unique machine, even if a bit pricey.
I really like what cowon have tried to do with the Q5. Yes, I do see it as a bit of a "work in progress" in some areas, but hope there are more FW upgrades to come. Cowon do seem to have a good record for not abandoning their customers.
Sorry if this has rambled on a bit - I'm in full rant mode...

All I'm saying is that it's pretty irritating to plug in my Canon SD100 Digital Elph camera, (which is not a new camera so the Cowon should recognize it), to transfer some photos over and then get an error message and then have the same thing happen with my Olympus E-10. The Youtube videos keep crashing the internet browser. There are developers scrambling to get apps crammed into the iPhone and Touch and I can't even download a decent player for internet radio. I've tried the Windows Media 9 and it doesn't work. The wifi keeps dropping the internet signal even when I'm in the house with the signal, granted it is not in the same room as the wifi modem, but if I gotta do that, c'mon, let's be real, why not just get on the computer.

Yes, it is VERY nice to carry around movies I like with me, but for $550.00 I guess I expected more than crippled wifi, crippled bluetooth, crippled OS with no apps, btw if anyone can tell me the way to activate the grayed out check box on the LAN window that says 'alert me whenever new networks are available', that would be much appreciated, since as it is, I have to just keep opening up the LAN window to check if a signal is available when I traveling. See...it's little things like these that keep me from absolutely liking the pants off this player. Don't get me wrong. It is a cool gadget, especially with the leather carrying case from jetmall, but it's expensive and everything about it seems dated except the aesthetics. I love the simplicity of the design, but the antennae seems fragile, the plastic tip has already came out of the thing you use to point with and I can't find it. It just seems like a lot. I just hope Cowon does something to fix these little irritations before rolling out the next version of it and abandoning all support.

I bought two Cowon Q5Ws along with the leather carrying cases and I've I'm also getting the GPS navigation cradles from Cowon for free because I bought during that special they were having, but even now with all of that being said, to anyone reading this who is contemplating buying a Cowon Q5W, let me say this to you...DO NOT BUY THIS PLAYER IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FEEL DUPED. There's alot of talk about the audio/video quality of this player compared to the iPhone and Archos and let me just say this, you will so regret it if you think that you can hear or see the difference in quality. I don't need reference quality on an MP3 player because most of the time I play it through my car speakers and the adapter screws up the quality of the sound anyway and I've heard my friends iPhone through headphones and the myth about the sound quality being that bad is a myth being perpetrated by people who have bought other players trying to make themselves feel superior because they don't want to admit having been duped. I myself, have tried to convince myself that this player doesn't suck and it's not built on outdated technology, but the simple fact is that it is and no amount of updates will ever...EVER, make it worth the price tag compared to the functionality of an iPhone or iPod Touch or even an Archos. This player is nothing more than expensive junk. Noone even writes software for the MIPs processor anymore. This is only my opinion, but if you don't believe me, please hang-on to your receipt and do not let the thrity day period lapse after you purchase it or be fooled that it's not worth a 10% restocking fee to get rid of this thing. I psyched myself into believing that it wasn't worth sending it back and now I will be forever sorry for it.

I know that this is somewhat off-topic, but in response to AmazingRobie. I don't even own at Q5W as of yet, but I am hoping that by the time that I do that many of the irritations will be recitfied. There has yet to be found in my opinion a perfect anything. Even when the ipod was released it had problems and it still does and I own two an old 20gb click wheel and a 80gb video. But in either case I believe that the Q5W has the potential to so much more. I just hope Cowon feels the same and works towards that end.

Well, I have to agree with AmazingRobie. I bought Cowon only because I needed something capable of playing of loseless music files, such as FLAC and APE. I had read of it's amazing sound quality, but actually it'is really not what I expected. The sound quality is far worse than my Iriver T10's. But now it's too late to regret, I have no chance to send back.

There's alot of talk about the audio/video quality of this player compared to the iPhone and Archos and let me just say this, you will so regret it if you think that you can hear or see the difference in quality.

That's because you're blind my friend [toungue]
I've compared my Q5w with my friend's iPod Touch (same video capabilities as iPhone) and the Q5w is far way better (plus, you don't need to re-encode your videos with the Q5w). I've never seen an Archos for real, so I cannot judge.

For the audio section, I prefer my iRiver T60 but the Q5w is not worse than all iPods.

Got to agree. A friend I work with has the iPhone, and while it's got a much better interface, the playback quality doesn't come near the Q5W - video or audio. He agrees with that.

Another guy has the Archos 705. I haven't had the opportunity to look at that extensively (he works in another area), but so far the Q5W video edges it out. I don't know about the audio comparo on that.

They all have plusses and minuses. The iPhone has internet pretty much anywhere, though slow. I wish I could get internet on my Q5W at work.

While the Q5W playback is leaps above the iPhone, it's also much larger and heavier. But, on the other had, the Q5W has radio, and I don't need to re-encode everything to fit Apple's idea of what all files should be.

And, when I plug my Q5W into a different computer, it doesn't erase all of my files. My daughter's iPod did that when we moved iTunes to her new laptop. Turns out, that's intentional. Apple is afraid you're pirating, so if you plug into a different instance of iTunes, it resets your iPod.

Apple makes nice PCs (and, they are fully PCs now), and OSx is better than Windows (not by that much anymore), but their iPods and software suck.

... is this a real WinCE device or not?

I'm a programmer and I'd like to get this mostly because I can write programs for it. But if I can't, that takes the wind out of my sails right now.

I see people using special install instructions to get things to work. Are you guys trying things you shouldn't or is the Q5W really this annoying to use?

I'd like to depend on this as my WindowsCE device and only get a cheap little phone, but if I can't depend on this then forget it.

I’m currently using a freeware program called npop for remote e-mail access on the Q5W.
[npop Source:
http://www.nakka.com/soft/npop/index_eng.html
npop mips - Q5W compatible file[yes]
http://www.nakka.com/soft/npop/downl...09ce211_EN.zip ]
I have found it to be very easy to use to sent and receive email and attachments so far like jpgs and txt files. It also allows you to send a copy of outgoing email from the Q5W to yourself.
It’s a great little program since it doesn’t delete the mail from the ISP’s mail server. I’m able to get my email on-the-go on the Q5W using npop and then later on my desktop using my regular e-mail client Mozilla Thunderbird.

I don't need reference quality on an MP3 player because most of the time I play it through my car speakers and the adapter screws up the quality of the sound anyway
So wait, because your adapter screws up the sound you're blaming the Q5W for not having good quality?

I've heard my friends iPhone through headphones and the myth about the sound quality being that bad is a myth being perpetrated by people who have bought other players trying to make themselves feel superior because they don't want to admit having been duped.

I've listened to the exact same mp3s on my friend's ipod and on a cheap no-name $25 mp3-cd player I got from wal-mart and the ipod sounded worse than the POS mp3-cd player. The iPods INTERFACE is amazing, but the sound quality was atrocious (though to be honest, it's much more noticeable on certain songs than on others). I've never been 'duped' because I've never owned an mp3 player of my own because the sound quality of the ipod made me assume ALL mp3 players would sound that shitty until I started doing some googling to see if there was anything better out there. Considering all the reviews I've read (even the ones that are generally negative) praise it for superior sound/video quality, I'm going to assume it's more than just people trying to delude themselves into not feeling duped.

I thought the same thing. That's like saying that a band sucks because you didn't like their tune when you heard your friend whistle it in the shower.

Anywho, thanks for the nPop link, trying it out now.

Hi Guys!
This is my first post on this site so I'm kinda new to this.
I have the iAudio X5L from before, and wanted a PMP and the only available unit right before I went to work (1 month on a boat offshore) was the Archos 605 Wifi. ;:( Well... The only thing to say... It sucks! Reboots itself all the time when playing movies and music. The picture/video quality is good, but the Audio quality cannot be compared to iAudio. The X5 performs several times better than Archos when it comes to volume level and punch in the sound. I've just ordered the Q5W and it has arrived my wife and I'm gonna get it on wednesday when the boat goes ashore for a crewchange. The archos is going straight back to the shop. Cowon rules!!

Hi guys!

I just received my Q5W from USA yesterday.
After playing a little bit with it, I noticed that when I enable Mach3Bass the volume gets significantly lower... I'm running apps v1.48 and FW v1.47. Volume above 30 does not improve a lot when I turn it up all the way to 40 which is full power. I also want to install plus for windows, but that does not work. The error message I get is that the program is not a CE program or something like that. I want also want an Office file editor so I can edit *.doc and *.xls files. If that is possible, I can leave my PC at home when I go to work (a month offshore on a boat). Please answer these questions quys! Besides that I am very happy with my Q5W compared to the Archos 605 Wifi I sent back to the shop. The only thing I miss with the Archos is the quality of the touch screen compared to the Q5W.

Cowoner28547,

I hope the link helped.
If your interested in experimenting with your desktop/laptop computer there is a great "free-to-try" for 30 days program called cabwuz. It is good for a quick check for compatibility with the Cowon Q5W.
MIPS R4000 (ID=4000) is compatible with the Cowon Q5W. It can extract files like dlls and exe files from cabs.

Once again, Garrnog ... THANK YOU!!! You've been extremely helpful in making this Q5W more operational for uses other than music.

There is ONE program that I want to use on the Q5 so bad! It comes in MIPS, but it won't install. It's called:

Pocket Mindmap (See Link)

http://www.pocketmindmap.com/

It's an incredible mindmapping program that I want to buy. There is also the FREE mindmapper called "Pocket Freemind" that comes in MIPS, but it won't install either. DANG!!!

http://sourceforge.net/projects/pocketfreemind/

I'll take your advice and try to decompile the cabs and see what can be done.

Kudos To YOU!!!

Guys,

Been meaning to try this for ages but MojoPac works [biggrin] (as it should)

What is it ?

It's a piece of software that can be installed on any mass storage device that emulates an installation of your current O/S (XP in my case) on your device (Q5 in this case). It can be used on any PC (unfortunately you need to be log into the host PC as an admin) and does not require any software on the host PC to run.

NOTE you can only run it via a host PC, this will not work as a standalone O/S on your Q5.

You can install any app you like (license permitting) onto the Windows 'emulation' on your device so you can essentially take your main PC anywhere you like and use it on someone else's PC [thumbsup].

It's free as well for the personal version, you have to create an account on their web site but is really easy to setup and works very well. I haven't tested the new version fully yet but the old one could run games pretty good (the odd stutter on high action sequences).

The footprint of the O/S is very small but any software you install uses the full file size.

Oh and set the host PC's autoplay to prompt for action then you can select Run MojoPac if you want to use it rather than automatically play video/ audio files etc.

MojoPac (http://www.mojopac.com/portal/content/hellomojo.jsp) enjoy [thumbsup]

I'm not sure whether this one is different from u3, google desktop, etc. or not but from what they mentioned on their web site it seems you can use your q5w instead of the connected host pc so in that case does the pc's performance affect the q5w's performance? If not I might consider to get an older model of oqo which is just 0.2oz heavier than q5w and only $632.51.

From what I've seen of U3 you have to download or purchase software from their website and it will only work with one of their USB drives, with MojoPac you can install any program you own onto any mass storage device.

You can even install programs onto your device from the host PC, pop the CD/DVD in and you can access it from your 'MojoPac' session (you can't access any of the data on the host PC from it of course only removable media)

I've got Far Cry on mine atm [thumbsup]

You have to use a host PC it won't run directly on your device, the performance of your device is not effected as it only transfers data back and forward to the host PC which does the main work as it were.

Here is a fixed package so that Resco Keyboard can be installed once and for all!
For me it is working just fine. Of course is not very functional because the resco keyboard is too big... but at least i can write Greek or that ever language i want.

Here is the link: http://rapidshare.com/files/121226845/Resco_Keyboard_v4.33.zip.html

Warning! 1) if you install this DON'T choose it to be the correct input method! (The installation asks if you want it as the correct installation method.)

2) You need to change some registry entries!
Look here: http://www.owendia.com/forum/programmes-wince-5-0/nouveau-clavier-pour-q5w/?PHPSESSID=09e650200afa51bd23841174ae12ea91

Many Thanks to hom2lombre and odeyssus from Owendia Forum for fixing my mistakes.
