View Full Version : RDS for FM tuner?

I was/am allways wondering why none of the portable devices(which come with an FM tuner) have RDS implemented.
Does this require special HW(for filtering out the signal)? If not, this would be another point for the "wish list"...

It's a skateboardshop in Vancouver, although I suspect fx3kse has something else in mind :)

Ah... after a little googeling I found something.
http://www.pira.cz/rds/rdscone.htm#rds

Never heard of that, but it sound interesting. It's like getting artist and track name on the display when you're listening to radio.

RDS. Whats that ?????Sorry, here in europe (almost) every car radio has this feature built-in AND (almost)every radio station does transmit RDS data.
RDS stands for Radio Data System -> http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Data_System

good question fx3000se. ive always wondered that as it just makes it nicer when searching for Radio stations when the player actually tells you the name of it. I really wouldn't have imagined that it would be that difficult to implement. Though if Europe is the only continent, they may not bother for USA or asia

It's obvious that iriver is not an international corporation, and has much of its focus on home market. One of the reasons that tag database is not implemented is that it wouldn't make much sense to have one in Korean, so I've heard.

I think it is great to have a company with national identity stepping on toes of multinational corporations, and I personally gladly accept some minor omissions that come with that. One of these, I suspect, is the RSD support, given that it is mainly used in Europe.

I've wished for the same. fx3000se I believe it's more likely because it's only available in Europe so they don't bother or know about it. It's a pity as it's excellent.

It allows several things:

Radio stations to be named
Traffic information
Search for types of music (by genre)
+ More I can't remember what though.

Even home radios have it, it's very common. I've no idea why it's not available outside of Europe (one thing we have over American technology :D)

We do have RDS support in the US, and yes it is a very useful feature.

Interesting I never knew that. It's not very common though right?

It's on 95% of car radios in the UK and a good portion of home radios.

...if RDS is "only" a matter software, then it should not be that hard to implement/integrate...
BUT: is it really only a matter of software?

I had no idea... But then again, I never listen to commercial radio.

RDS is not actually a matter of software. I requires additional hardware chip to extract the RDS data from the radio waves. So I don't think a firmware update could add such a feature to any player.

It requires additional hardware chip to extract the RDS data from the radio waves too bad... :(

well i'd happily settle for the ability to name radio stations on the x5 instead of rds support - although i'm not sure *how* exactly you'd write the name with a joystick...

Taht's the easy part. You have a 6x6 matrix with alphabet and punctuation, just move around and select. Just like you enter text when you play a game.

Exactly! I'm sure that's capable in a firmware upgrade.

Hahaha I live in Costa Rica (and no, it is NOT Puerto Rico), when that even get's implemented over here radio won't be used in other countries. Just to give you an idea. lol

He's saying puerto rico is so far behind in technology that other contries will move onto another medium by the time they get RDS.

Actually, chino meant Costa Rica and not Puerto Rico, cuz P.R. isn't far behind in technology at all.

The main benefit of RDS in a car is some national stations broadcast on different frequencies, in a narrow band in different parts of the country. (BBC Radio 4 is 93-95 FM) As you travel, your radio will re-tune to the stronger signal.

Also is the TA function that can inturupt a tape, or switch stations to tune into a Traffic Announcement", and thgen switch back. (provided the station remember to broadcast the "TA on" and "TA off" commands !!)

I think in JetShell there is a possibility to create a list of names of radio stations and then transfer that to the player. It least it works with G3 and other flash players. Have you tried that with X5?
