Hi,would those of you using emulators mind posting your impressions or an overview of the ones you have tried?

I'm guessing,as you have taken the trouble to install them on the q5,that you probably run them on your desktop to.If so,how do they compare?

What kind of FPS speeds do you get,do most games run smoothly?
How is the compatibility, does it run most games you have tried well?
What is the joypad and touch pad responsiveness like?
Where they easy to get running?
How was the sound?

Can you post links to the emulators you have running well?I've found some but as i dont yet have a q5w i dont know if they will work well.I'm especially interested in Snes,Genesis,Pc-engine and Mame.

I'm not expecting miracles from the q5,but ive heard winCE emulators can be quite good! For me this is a great bonus for the q5w,and may help me decide wether to get this or an A3.
Now,if only q5w played .mkv and .vob files....

I've never used an emulator but it sounds very interesting. I'd love to have a good game or two on my Q5W. I'd especially be interested in which games you guys would recommend. I'll be watching this thread with great interest.

Thanks Wuku...

Using morphgear (http://fms.komkon.org/MorphGear/) I could emulate theses devices perfectly:
NES
SNES
GameBoy
GameBoy Advance
Genesis / Megadrive
Speed and sound were good. I found it on a korean ftp, just had to copy and paste the files on the q5, and it was running. Morphgear is shareware so it is normal that it works great.

I also tested YAME (http://www.pocketpcfreewares.com/en/index.php?soft=1113), but it only took GB roms, without any problem at full speed and full screen).

The playstation 2 gamepad I'm using to play is somehow detected as a keyboard, so the speed is good. The only problem I had is that the buttons of the second gamepad I plugged are binded to the same keys as the first. I'm hoping to find a solution to be able to enjoy multiplayer games.

I don't know about mame but I think I recall seeing some emulators.

I don't yet have a Q5 but I was wondering if there might be a way to use the Q5 remote control as a game controler. If the Q5 remote already emulates existing key strokes, then maybe you could use a keyboard remapping utility compatible with WINCE to swap those around. Just a thought....

http://www.damnsoft.org/cgi-bin/ghostgui.cgi?nographics=;app=projects;section=okey

"With OKey you can remap your keyboard as you like, you can make X be Z and
Z be Y and so on. Also, you can create special key combinations to generate UNICODE characters."

There is a PS2 emulator for PC, called "PCSX2". It runs really poorly, and requires an overclocked C2D to be able to run at full speed.

It will be MANY years until a portable device will be able to emulate a PS2, or even an N64 at full speed.

Wadjus
12-23-2007, 14:28
Tostino, i know the "PCSX2" and it isn't a good PS2 emulator like you say!

Tostino, i know the "PCSX2" and it isn't a good PS2 emulator like you say!It does emulate a good number of games, but where did I say it was a good emulator? If anything, I implied the opposite. That is off-topic anyways, and is of no relevance to this thread.

Anyone find a working version of Mame yet?

I did a search on Google for "MameCE3 for HPC2K Ver1.2 MIPS" which I saw on that Korean forum link. It installed, launches, recognizes the roms in the rom folder, but the games won't work.

Guys does the sound work when you play a Snes game??

The sound on mine when i use morphgear only seems to work on nes games but not snes.... should this be the case??

Also has anybody got a mame emulator working and if so can you post thelink? Cheers :)

Hi Chattabobs,

If you use YameCE , it's normal : sound only works with nes emulation not for snes.

If you want a better program (with sound working for snes games), download 'morphgear'.

will scumm, morphgear, or other play:

Nintendo DS
PSP

some interesting links I've found

No-Intro dat files: http://www.gbadat.altervista.org/datset.htm
ClrMamePro: http://www.clrmame.com/
RomCenter: http://www.romcenter.com/

What "No-Intro" does is fill some .dat files, to be used with ROM-Managers, with information about the known ROMS released. Often there are more versions of the same ROM dump, but most of them are garbage, some examples may include: bad dumps, hacks, fakes, overdumps, underdumps, and so on. "No-Intro" lists only the best available ROM; it must be a full dump with no faults and no changes to the file, basically just the ROMS that are the closest as possible to the original licensed cartridges.

I haven't tried any of them yet

No,im afraid not. There is no working emulator for these in wince.Even pc emulation for these platforms is at a prettty early stage.

The program links are for software to help clean up and sort out your ROM files on your pc.

No,im afraid not..

Thanks for the heads up. Perhaps you can clear up something else. On one of the pages is claimed MorphGear started commercial in 2000 and is opensource as of 2004.

Here's the bad news

The only modules that can't be touched are still being developed by our talented Marat, who does the Gameboy/Color, Gameboy Advance, Nes, GameGear/SMS modules. These four Modules by Marat [are] not opensource because they are our commercial Modules (meaning you have to pay for these 4) and are not needed to be handled by anyone else but the original creator of them, Marat. He is currently porting his newest updates and hopefully will be released sometime in July. Otherwise, Like I said before, Morphgear itself is pretty much Open-sourced to the public to use
.
also = http://www.emuboards.com/invision/index.php?showtopic=19611&view=findpost&p=212547

Hopefully there are alternative emulators in MorphGear.. unless you can recommend something else for: Gameboy, Gameboy Advance, NES

For NES I think pocket NESter might work:
http://superb-west.dl.sourceforge.net/sourceforge/pnester/pn07_mips_ppc.zip
http://pnester.sourceforge.net/

SNES, TG16 and Genesis have always been free modules for MG

Has anyone tried to play an emulator on the tv via the q5w composite\component output? If so how did it look?
Just wondering if the q5w relays everything to a tv.

GUNS
01-24-2008, 10:27
I just tried it out and yes it works fine, basically it will display whatever is on the players screen so if they get the bluetooth working with other devices you could plug the Q5W into the tv to browse the net etc. The quality of the picture wasn't the best though. It is great when you are playing films but going through menus and the emulator screen etc. look a little blurry and over saturated in colour. However this is on a pretty old TV that is crap anyway so i would expect it to look just fine on a newer LCD/plasma TV.

Wuku
01-24-2008, 12:19
Thanks GUNS.So basically you have a portable video player\web browser and games system all in one, that you can put on any tv!Very cool!

Unzip the file into a folder on your computer. You may need to download winzip or winrar in order to do this. Once you do this, copy the SDL files into the same directory as ScummVM.exe (though I believe you only need the gapi one). Then upnzip the modern.zip file into that same directory. I'm not sure if you need to do that, but it wouldn't work on my Q5 until I did.

Once you did all that, upload that whole folder to your hard disk and point Scummvm to your game folders.

You're very welcome. I've been testing many of the games available for Scummvm and so far, the only one that I can't get to work properly is Curse of Monkey Island. The game crashes shortly after the intro. I think this is because there isn't enough ram on the Q5. It's a shame, that game is hilarious.

Other games I have tested and found playable are:
Secret of Monkey Island
Monkey Island 2: Lechuck's Revenge
Maniac Mansion
Day of the Tentacle
Sam and Max Hit the Road - this involved a bit of tweaking, but it works nicely.

First, I would hold suspect your copy of the game.

After that, make sure you have dropped the GAPI .dll into the main directory and fire it up straight. I"m running HQx2 with default options on everything. I ticked fullscreen and thats it.

This baby purrs with no hiccups or slowdowns.

My heartfelt Thanks to all of you that have been posting about emulators. I had never tried one before I listened to you folks. I have to admit I was doubtful about the purchase of my Q5W until I discovered Morphgear. It installed so easy and the games perform flawlessly with my wireless rumblepad. The ability to run emulators tipped the tide and now I'm very pleased with my purchase. I'm just beginning to truly realize the power of my Q5W. [thumbsup]

I haven't seen many recent posting in this thread and I wanted to keep the ball rolling. It would be just fantastic if MAME worked on the Q5W. I use it on my PC with my Hotrod joystick. I love trying to conquer the arcade games I never finished in my misspent youth! Theres something about the mindless simplicity of games like Pac Man, Bubble Bobble, Ghosts n Goblins and Donkey Kong that todays complex games just can't recapture. [smile]

Has anyone been able to use MAME on their Q5W yet?

Thank you,

Not that I've hear of mate. This has worked for me a couple of times now so you may want to try this: If you have any Turbografix games try to load one of them first.... I found when I opened one of these games the sound came back for some reason [thumbsup] Only problem is when you upgrade your F/W it resets everytihng again hense why I've not upgraded to the latest version.

If this doesnt work then I'm not sure, but the sound came on for me without messing around with the settings. Try switching between between different games on different consoles as this also worked when I upgraded the F/W last time and was shocked and annoyed the sound had dissapeared again! Eventually it comes back for me, sometimes in minutes others in days/weeks. Very frustrating I know

Good luck

Not exactly roms, but the original games (CD,iso, etc). Original... Try some googling...

Can SCUMMVM play games directly from an iso or do you need to mount it and install it first? How do you go about doing something like that on the cowon?

mantra-of-doom
05-07-2008, 10:39
Scummvm does not read an iso, you have to copy the game files off of the CD or floppy into a folder on your hard drive (or rather, the Q5). Here is a link to the scumm forum post with a guide on how to rip and compress most games.

http://forums.scummvm.org/viewtopic.php?t=936

The version that runs on the Q5 is a mips compile of version 0.10.0. I hope someone compiles the latest version soon, because they added compatibility for more games with the last update.

action_mapping=0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0111 0112 0114 0113 000d

2) Change the 8th number to something other than zero. Continuing the above example:

action_mapping=0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 1234 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0000 0111 0112 0114 0113 000d

PS. The action_mapping variable contains the following actions in this order:

"Pause", "Save", "Quit", "Skip", "Hide Toolbar", "Show Keyboard", "Sound on/off", "Right click", "Show/Hide Cursor", "Free look", "Zoom up", "Zoom down", "Multi Function", "Bind Keys", "Cursor Up", "Cursor Down", "Cursor Left", "Cursor Right", "Left Click"

This will make it stop asking for a right click. You can then double tap to cycle through the cursors.

SNES works flawless [thumbsup]

Genesis/Generator works but sound is buggy with a few games and pops/hiss occasionally regardless of Morphgear settings. Some games slow up/can't keep up during play... like Sonic. Maybe I am using a bad emulator but using the only one that worked on MIPS. All the roms are .bin the multi-file roms failed to load.

Still need to get a NES emulator.

Overall happy, hope to experimebnt more with the Genesis roms. I think a sticky of the working emulators and links would be great so we know what we are all using.

Hello,

I wonder if anyone can help. Whenever I load up a rom file I get an error message that states: "There is no application associated with (name of the game.) Run the application first, then open this file from within the application."

This makes no sense to me because I am trying to open the file within Morphgear!

Any ideas?

Thanks.

I have just got a Q5 and would like to know do normal standard SNES roms you see everywhere work with it? There aren't any special roms that you have to use with morphgear are there?

Nope, the regular rom files work fine. Happy playing!

Oh, I have a Saitek game pad, but it was too advanced for WinCE to recognize it, so I spent $9.99 at a local Target and got a Logitech Precision and it works like a charm, even through my little USB hub.

And with a mouse and flexible keyboard hooked up too.
http://www.geeks.com/details.asp?invtid=FLEX-KYB-EL-BLU - This works great for TextMaker.

I need some help pleas :(

I have copied morpghgear over to my q5 and it loads fine, but it wont load any games. :(

I have downloaded about 10 SNES games in .rar format. I tried to load the .rar file and it keeps telling me insufficient memory or somehting like that.
I then unrarred the files and copied the .7z files across and they still didn't work! I then renamed to .zip and then still didn't work.

Am I doing something wrong? I thought all emulators load the roms from the compressed archive?

Thanks
Simon

I have now figured out that I have to decompress the archives into folders and then load the SMC files hehehe

I'm having trouble getting scummvm to fullscreen. the program works great just is a very small display with in the scummvm window. any ideas? Thanks

How did you get that to work? I'm having trouble. The only thing I'm finding is you're supposed to hit alt and enter but I have no idea how to do that without a keyboard.

Ok, I was able to figure out how to get full screen on the Scumm thing, but now I'm having trouble with Morphgear

I buy Logitech Rumblepad 2 USB and i have some problems. No games play with rumblepad.
Why?
How can i install pad that cowon recognize it?
How can i install pad in morphgear?

Please help me.

LP,
Uroš

I'm having the same problem. I've tried the logitech rumblepad 2, and the logitech precision. I assumed the rumblepad didn't work because when I used it on my PC I had to use the cd included with it to install drivers, while the Precision seems to be plug and play. But this doesn't work either. I also wasn't able to get it to recognize my wireless mouse when I plugged the receiver into the USB thing, but that may again be due to it having a cd with drivers.

Edit:
Apparently you have to enable USB Host under the cowon interface utility/settings/system and that lets you use the joystick.

My sincere apologies for beating a dead horse, but I am getting the familiar "insufficient memory" error when trying to run games using MorphGear. [sad] I've read over these forums again and again for the last couple hours and those who solved the problem more often than not failed to discuss how they solved it. [no]
My first problem was that the morphgear that can be downloaded here:
http://www.spicypixel.com/web/page/morphgear/Home.aspx, gives me the "incompatible device" error and won't install using ActiveSync. So, I moved on and found a post here that gave a rapidshare link to a decompressed (just the folders) MorphGear that could just be copied to the Q5W. (I'd give the link but I'm having difficulty all the sudden finding the correct post)

I used that and copied it directly into the Hard Disk\Program Files section of my Q5W (i'm aware that CE destroys everything not in Hard Disk upon reboot). However, whenever I load a rom (placed in Hard Disk\My Documents) it gives the memory error. I've heard rumblings about needing modules for MG but can't find those anywhere (the ones for download on the site give the same incompatability error that the actual MG exe file does). I was hoping one of the several people who seem to have been successful installing and running MG could give me some tips or simply write out the steps they took in installing and running MG successfully. Thank you for your time guys. I appreciate any help. [cry]

Btw, I'm running the latest app 1.51 and firm 1.50.

I found that the problem was not with MG but the actual Roms :( for some reason and I have no idea why the same Roms from a different source worked just fine :) The reason you can't find the actual answer is its due to the Roms and people cannot post links or update Roms as this would be illegal and removed by the mod, you may have seen some helpful tips such as "google it" ect.... My avice would be to try different Roms

Apocjunk
09-27-2008, 17:24
Ah alright, I'll try that, and as far as ROMs go, I have my own way of getting them so I'm definitely not asking anyone at the forums to provide me links or downloads to ROMs, I'm just trying to get MorphGear to work successfully.

Thanks for your input, I'll try it out.

UPDATE: Wow, you were completely right chattabobs! The roms I had wouldn't work at all but I tried some from a different source and, viola! Thanks again!

I haven't tried it yet, but I'll give it a shot later today and let you know.

Also, you can't charge it via usb, only through an AC adapter or the GPS cradle. And I don't think you can replace the battery yourself, you'd have to send it in to Cowon to replace it for you if it gets to the point that it's that bad.

@sin 73 (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/member.php?u=30070) I've used the on screen controls, and they differ in effectiveness from game to game. For the most part, they are pretty bad. Spring for a small controller. There are some that fold up for about $10 on ebay. And if you do go with the Q5w, I have an almost completely new case I'm willing to part with. It looks like this: http://www.noreve.com/product/Housse_cuir_Cowon_iAudio_Q5_Tradition.html

I ended up sending my Q5 back due to some issues. They offered a replacement for my lemon, but by then I just wasn't feeling the Cowon love anymore. I went back to my old Cowon X5.

thanks for the assist,
Oh that battery thing , you all are kidding about sending it back for replacement right??

I live in the West indies thats just not gonna happen. so there has to be a battery i could changeout..( i know void the warranty)
and if the unit can charge via the GPS its chargeable via 12V, just depends on how it connects

ednetman (http://iaudiophile.net/forums/member.php?u=7601)

its not the matter of price, its the fact that i really don't want to carry anything else.
as for the case its sweet. if i do buy the q5w , i'll be intouch.

i'm looking at a practical usage.
the pandora is a beast- no disputing that, its also fat and the keyboard , well its not really gonna be that good for extended typing.
besides i want my music and videos to pop, text reading docs are all secondary.

Oh and NO i'm not looking at netbooks. this device should be pocketable and pracital

@sin 73 - I was very impressed with he quality of the videos, in fact one night my wife and I had a "Drive In Movie" date watching the Q5 in the GPS cradle on a quiet, deserted, back road in the country..... Gotta love babysitters!

I had a lot of ROM files and would play old TurboGraphix games on the airplane, etc. I got a LOT of curious looks, and it is an attention getter. I lost them all when the drive crashed :-(

It is a very versatile player, and I had Softmaker Office installed. I used a USB hub to plug in a mini mouse and one of those cool rollup keyboards (http://www.handhelditems.com/airtouch-flexible-mini-keyboard-blue-p-14870.html). It worked good for taking notes in class, etc. So, baiscly, you can have one device serve as your media player, game system, and portable computer. The case has a stand that holds it at the perfect angle for watching movies or typing.

Talking about the player is bringing back good memories, I may have to buy another one, maybe the O2 this time.

thanks man, you make it sound ideal.
so i take it that the win ce 5 wasn't a problem for you as alot of people here seem to have.

ednetman

Well, I wouldn't say problem. I would say 'challenge' is more appropriate. There were lots of old software repositories waiting to be ravaged. The problem is that not all of them were compatible with the type of processor the Q5 used. There was a lot of trial and error. Oh, and the guys at DVDFab said they were working on a mobile profile optimized for the Q5 screen.

I was looking for RSS readers that could handle enclosures right before my drive died. I wanted to download podcasts when I had wifi connectivity directly to the unit.

Oh, I use an at&t air card and did some research. Apparently, the older model from mine had a WinCE client available. I can't remeber the model, but a search on SierraWireless's support page could help you. Then buy off ebay and drop your SIM in.

You could also take some programming classes and learn how to tweak some of the apps to work with a MIPS processer. There was someone in the forum that rewrote an app or two and made them available here.

sin 73
01-09-2009, 06:33
Err

ednetman
i live in the west indies
no At&t here and have no intention of using it as a phone. other than that i just read that it has three different gui interfaces, wing click pen and finger??
now i'm off searching to see what that looks like. LOL buy the time i'm finished research my daughter will be ready for the thing.

ednetman
01-09-2009, 14:04
Ha! I didn't mean to use it as a phone! I use an AirCard for internet access. It's a USB dongle that connects to the at&t 3g network, well let's face it, I live in the sprawling Texas countryside so it's usually EDGE. :-)

As far as pictures, they are all over this forum and at COWONGLOBAL.com COWONAMERICA.com, and NewEgg.com used to have a lot of great images.

The interfaces, uhm. Well ther's really not that much diffeance between Pen and Finger. I let it on finger because I wanted the icons as large as possible for driveing. The buttons are always on the wings, so I don't think you can count that.

It gets a bit hot in the cradle, but I heard they were working on the fix. That is supposedly what was casuing the drives to fail. If you end up pulling the triger on this one, look at getting one of these:
http://kotaku.com/gaming/gamepads/fold-up-that-gamepad-199708.php

I bought a full size game pad, and it was to bulky to keep with me. I should have invested in this.

ednetman

thanks man , i've seen pics
http://www.rcgrabbag.com/archives/cowon-q5w-teardown/
about hd upgrade, from what i see i can see why it gets hot, the batt looks like its direct on the back metal cover- hence heat if you couls remove it from the back it should improve the heat and extend the life.
thanks for the link i've seen this before and if i do got in this direction its a must buy along with that software (soft word thingy) and a folding keyboard.

hey
does this thing do mulit functions
