Greetings!
I have just joined the ranks (yesterday) of the Cowon A3 owners. My main purpose is to convert VHS analog data to a format that I can burn and view on a DVD. A couple of questions come to mind:
1. Is this possible? i.e can one record VHS onto the Cowon A3 (I know I can do that part) and then transfer the file in a digital format onto the PC and burn onto a DVD?

2. How do I do this? I have so far not been able to convert asf files into a format that enables me to view them on the pc.

Any assistance will be much appreciated.

wow, VHS? tape media is old. but ya, you can record it to the A3.

use the included the cables to connect the VHS player's composite video out signal to the AV-In jack on the A3. press play on the VHS machine. go the video recording screen on the A3 and press the A button to start. press it again to stop.

don't feel bad. i used VHS in the 80s to rip video from OTA broadcasts. quality was shit but wtf, free video. my favorite was the 3-day star trek marathons. those red shirt guys always got killed. dumbasses. never transport to a strange planet when you're the only dude without a name! duh.

Thanks austinv - Yes I know that VHS is old but then so am I... old folk manage fine with old media :)

I don't have a problem copying VHS to the A3 - this works very nicely and is a relatively simple procedure. The question is; after I copy to the A3, can I convert the copied file into a format that I can burn onto a DVD+R.

Any ideas??
Thanks again

ya, you can, but you'll need software to covert the recorded video to MPEG-2 and set up the file structure in a video-DVD format before burning to DVD.

I can't remember how off hand. It's been so long since I did such a thing.

OK! at least you have confirmed that I can, that in itself is good news!
Thanks again..

good thread.. just to continue on that same topic. I have a Direct TV HD DVR, Will the A3 basically record off of that the same way as the VCR you all are talking about, and then dump it into a PC hard drive???

The answer is "yes" - the fellow in the shop where I bought the A3 yesterday demonstrated this for me. With a Direct TV HD DVR (or a similar device) the procedure is reasonably straight forward, all it takes is a bit of adjusting and fine-tuning.

What I am looking for is a method of converting the AFS files that are created by the A3 to Mpeg-2 format or any other DVD compatible format, without having to use an intermediate piece of hardware.
