These US prices look great compared to best UK offers (Amp3?). [thumbdwn] I guess a lot of people will be taking advantage of the Sterling/dollar exchange rates and picking up a bargain this Xmas!

Having just returned from living in the uk for a while, I know what you mean. Everything is so expensive there when measured against the dollar, getting an 8gig D2 for 110 pounds or so would be a steal.

Do you think it would be ok to buy from the US? I live in the UK, and really want an 8Gb D2, and the US prices look very tempting. Never bought anything from the US though. Does anyone have any experience of this? Also, how long does it take to deliver, roughly?

Thanks

Hi, I just got my 8GB D2 from B&H in the US. Everything was fine. Although they ask you to verify your credit card by sending a photo copy (which was a little bit of a pain), the transaction was smooth. I received the player within a week and a half of ordering. I can't remember what customs are like in the UK, but I had to fork out approx. € 45 on receipt of the package (nevertheless, it was still about € 90 cheaper than in Germany).

I can only recommend the move to buy in the US.

However, be warned, the warranty only applies to the US. Thus you'll have to send it back to the US in order to get it fixed on warranty issues.

Cheers

In the UK you are going to be hit with customs duty (varies by item type, but maybe 5-7% for most stuff), and then VAT at 17.5%. Those get charged on everything (including shipping and insurance .. actually I think they even charge VAT on the Customs duty!). Then add £5 or so for the post office's 'fee' for paying the duty and collecting it on your doorstep. Then your credit card company will whack you for 3% for paying in $$ (and give you a lousy exchange rate too). Overall you'll pay 40-60% more than the USA list price, even if they don't gouge you for shipping

IME the saving is rarely worth the hassle for anything which is potentially going to go wrong and need repair, because as the previous poster says, getting warranty work done in the USA is a major PITA, both for shipping/insurance costs, and all the delightful paperwork needed to avoid paying the duty all over again when the repaired unit comes back.

Thanks for that. I think I'll just get it here. Sending it back to the US to get fixed (if it needs it) is just too much hassle, since I won't be saving much anyway. I'm just going to get the 4gb d2 and a 16gb sdhc card - I reckon 20gb should be more than enough for everything I want to put on it!!

Thanks for your advice.
